Neilston is shampooe. He'll be back up here managing Raith Rovers by the end of 2017.
Typo aside, why don't you rate him?

Considering the money the huns and hibs have pissed away trying to get promoted, I'd say Neilson did a great job of getting them straight back up after walking that league. Not only that but he developed youths then was at the top end of the table taking points off us straight away.

Diets might be a right shower of ***** but Neilson is a good coach.

Their away record is awful, and was holding them back.
Fair point but I just can't see anyone doing much better than Neilson has. They are second in the table and they did well last season.

I think they have good players, and should be doing better. Neilsons been playing tony watt in midfield ffs.

Interesting that Levein when speaking about Neilson's successor always refers to a new "head coach",not a new manager. I reckon Levein is the main power at Tynecastle in his DoF role and makes the big decisions at Hearts.

Well, it works doesn't it?

The discontent amongst Hearts fans can be identified when you look at results like drawing 3-3 at Inverness and Hamilton, drawing 0-0 at home to Ross County, the Europa League games, hardly laying a glove on Celtic last season, setting the team up to counter the opposition rather than overpower them which they should be able to do against most sides.

Neilson was too cautious in big games, it's a habit he didn't get rid of after Falkirk beat us in the Championship season. Prior to that, it was chaotic attacking football.

It's a common enough set-up throughout Europe although the nature of the role can be very variable. Not knowing the exact ins and outs of Levein's job I would guess he acts as a technical director as well, overseeing signings and so forth but you would be better placed to know that.
For many clubs it does work well.

Looks like Ian Cathro will be appointed Hearts head coach tomorrow or Tuesday, with Austin MacPhee likely to be his assistant.

Big, bold move, that one.

Your thoughts on the chances of it working ? - Michael Stewart seemed unconvinced that he will be any good at Managing as opposed to coaching which is reputedly his forte.

HE’S probably not been this excited since FIFA 17 came out on PlayStation.

But Ian Cathro is about to find out what football’s like in the real world.

No harm to the guy set to be named as Hearts boss.

I was on the same Pro Licence course as Cathro, and he’s definitely obsessed with coaching.

He’s one of the up-and-coming, modern-era coaches who can organise a session just by flicking open his laptop.

There isn’t a session out there he couldn’t get on to his Macbook. But setting up a presentation to a group of players is all well and good.

That does not require man management skills, which is part of the game he knows absolutely nothing about.

Time will tell if I’m wrong on that. But if I was a Jambo I’d be worried.

For me the practical stuff involved in coaching is easy — it’s dealing with highly-charged players that’s the hard part.

And for me Cathro is way, way out of his depth.

Put it this way, even though Robbie Neilson was someone who’d had a playing career before taking that job, Craig Levein would still send scribbled messages to him on scraps of paper during matches.

Well, Levein better sharpen his pencil because his boy is going to need all the help he could get when he’s standing in that dugout.

People have questioned Neilson’s decision in leaving the Jambos and moving down to MK Dons.

For me, it’s a great move for him.

Sure, he’s leaving behind one of Scotland’s biggest clubs but how much further could he take Hearts?

The natives were never fully behind him so in my book he’s right to take this chance.

Yeah, maybe it’s risky, but his gamble is nothing to the one Hearts are taking.

I would just like Levein to come out and explain their thinking, because it doesn’t make a huge amount of sense to me.

Maybe he does plan to be more hands-on than he was with Neilson.

Levein’s a bright guy, and someone who knows how to handle big personalities having been an international manager himself.

But it’s important he comes out and talks about it. I don’t like the way it’s all been handled.

Hearts supporters have done so much for that club in recent years, and they deserve more information than they are getting.

Some of them won’t have a clue who Ian Cathro is, but it’s how the players see him. That’s what I’d be worried about if I was in his shoes.

Even Levein must be concerned about it. He’ll know the potential pitfalls in putting someone like Cathro into a dressing room environment where he could get eaten alive.

I’m not sure he’s got the character to be able to handle players yet.

I know his CV looks good. There are some glamourous names on there and he’s worked with some top people. I can’t imagine Rafa Benitez suffers fools gladly but I’d question how much actual involvement Cathro had at Newcastle.

I know for a fact he was the man who did the analysis on the opposition, and did a presentation to the squad.

I don’t think for one minute he just lays out cones and hands out bibs but after that?

I don’t see him as a dominant figure and someone who can tell it straight to players before, during or after matches.

I fear for him when he has a 30-something seasoned pro asking him why he’s not in the team.

Maybe this is just the way the game is going, though, that’s arguably the biggest thing about this.

People go on about one of the reasons our game is in decline is too many youngsters spend too much time on their computers.

But Cathro has shown that is maybe the best way into coaching in the modern era.

Hearts have already bought into Cathro’s Box Soccer coaching programme, they have been using it for years now.

But his inexperience is a major flaw and something which makes his imminent appointment at Tynecastle a major surprise.

I know people will point to Jose Mourinho and how he didn’t play the game at any level.

But let’s get it right, £100million Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea players are different animals to the lads at Hearts.

Mourinho also has the personality to be able to handle the superstar egos because he’s got one himself.

This was a Kris Boyd column today.

Suffice to say, I trust somebody like Levein appointing him, or Rafa Benitez, or Nuno, or Andres Villas-Boas, or the Dundee Utd coaches who can't speak highly enough of him over that welcome mat-headed Monster Munching troglodyte.
