Wonder why Lennon hasn't been linked with Leicester yet...I'm sure he would jump at the chance, could also appease the fans
Can't see the fans of a club that won the EPL 2 years ago being appeased with the appointment of the Hibs manager tbf

What's the closest to a World Cup that a manager of a team in contention ever been sacked?

Has a manager of a team still in the competition ever been sacked mid-tournament?

Extraordinary shambles
USSR in 1986 apparently.

Lobanovsky the Dynamo Kiev manager came in about a month before and promptly picked virtually the entire Dynamo squad.

Albeit not that you wouldn't have. They were the top team by far back then.

Correct move by the Spanish FA. Can't be getting shown up by one of your own club sides. Outrageous behaviour by Madrid in announcing it on the eve of their country's World Cup. If Celtic did the same I'd be furious with them for a total lack of class, this isn't just cos it's Real.

This dude is going to feel a right muppet when he gets dumped in October after an indifferent start to the season.

The chance to go to a World Cup as a coach happens once every four years. The chance to be Real coach comes up about three times a year.

He has absolutely effed this. Or more accurately, his agent has.

Thing is, Lennon would probably be an excellent aoppointment.

Leicester have the belief they are a truly big club now though, and will want a Johnny Foreigner “name” to come in.

Plus they still use these stupid annoying pathetic irritating fan clappy things , so eff them . eff them all.

The timing of that statement about Lopetegui is all about Florentino Perez's gimungus ego. The eyes of the footballing world are on the World Cup but he thinks Real Madrid are more important than his country's chances at that and probably bigger than the whole thing.

Wonder what the uber patriotic Madrid fans think of it all!

Love the ballsyness of that move from the Spanish FA President.

Apparently he got a phonecall from Florentino Perez five minutes before Real Madrid announced it yesterday. He wasn't even at Spain's World Cup base, he was in Moscow for the FIFA Congress. Left on a flight immediately.

I think there's enough experience in the Spain squad for this not to matter too much. Four players with over 100 caps and Pique sat on 98, with another three with at least 35 caps. That's not even counting people like De Gea, Costa, Isco, Thiago etc.

It should be a good lesson to anyone looking to do a deal behind your employer's back, especially one that you've just signed. There's a way of treating people. I don't expect anything else of Real, but Lopetegui and his agent have royally effed this.

Lopetegui might manage another country to the World Cup, especially if he gets binned early on from Madrid. But he won't ever manage Spain at one. I wonder how he is feeling right about now. Ooft.
100%, brave and I think the correct decision by the Spanish FA. Seems the coach signed a new 2 year contract a month ago, you hear all the time that coaches ban their players from negotiating moves during the World Cup as they want their focus on the national team and tournament alone.

If he was kept in post, what kind of message would that have sent to the players, they may have felt that they were free to negotiate transfers, contracts etc as their manager had done

Dunno if that's a fair comparison. Yer man hasn't been punted for negotiating a contract when he should have been focused on the tournament.

Sorry if it came across that way but it wasn't meant as a comparison, just an observation that as he was negotiating a move to Real in the week leading to the start of the World Cup if he had remained in post players may have felt that they could do the same during the tournament. I was looking at it from the point of view that if he had remained in post and he found that a player was negotiating a transfer he wouldn't really be in a position to tell the player they couldn't do that as they should be focussed only on the World Cup.

There's a comment on the BBC web site from some punter that thinks Pep should be appointed to do the job for the duration of the WC. "After all he wouldn't turn down his country".

I think you'll find he would mate!

To be fair he did say that after Man City his next job would be an international one.

Obviously it's too early just now, but Spain is custom built for him.

The romantic in me wants him to take the Holland job to bring it back full circle.
