They can only appoint from within at this point. It'll likely be Hierro.

Seems an over-reaction by Spain. Loads of managers at the World Cup will be leaving for club jobs at the end of the tournament. They’ve obviously taken the huff.

In fairness, if my man had only recently inked an extension to 2020 then given me 5 mins notice that he was effin off to another job I would be a tad furious as well

Love the ballsyness of that move from the Spanish FA President.

Apparently he got a phonecall from Florentino Perez five minutes before Real Madrid announced it yesterday. He wasn't even at Spain's World Cup base, he was in Moscow for the FIFA Congress. Left on a flight immediately.

I think there's enough experience in the Spain squad for this not to matter too much. Four players with over 100 caps and Pique sat on 98, with another three with at least 35 caps. That's not even counting people like De Gea, Costa, Isco, Thiago etc.

It should be a good lesson to anyone looking to do a deal behind your employer's back, especially one that you've just signed. There's a way of treating people. I don't expect anything else of Real, but Lopetegui and his agent have royally effed this.

Lopetegui might manage another country to the World Cup, especially if he gets binned early on from Madrid. But he won't ever manage Spain at one. I wonder how he is feeling right about now. Ooft.

Incredible stuff all round.

Surely this could have been kept quiet until after the WC?

It's not like he would have been responsible for Real's transfer dealings, just ask Zidane!

I suppose the Spanish FA will look at this & think he's been too busy thinking of himself, but I doubt it would have impacted on Spain at the WC.

The players won't be happy, surely?

Sure, and I could understand if this was a club side, but the Spanish FA isn’t a business. Spain, after this tournament finishes, won’t play another competitive match until 2019 so they’ve literally got a year to find a replacement. I’d estimate at least 75% of the managers at this World Cup will leave their posts once the tournament is over.

What's the closest to a World Cup that a manager of a team in contention ever been sacked?

Has a manager of a team still in the competition ever been sacked mid-tournament?

Extraordinary shambles

USSR in 1986 apparently.

Lobanovsky the Dynamo Kiev manager came in about a month before and promptly picked virtually the entire Dynamo squad.

Albeit not that you wouldn't have. They were the top team by far back then.

Wonder why Lennon hasn't been linked with Leicester yet...I'm sure he would jump at the chance, could also appease the fans
