I thought we’d heard the last of that sleekit old tosspot Smith but it seems as if the word has went out to his pals in the press that he’d be up for the job. It’d be a deeply depressing state of affairs if that dinosaur got the job, although it’d be entirely in keeping with Scottish football being permanently anchored in the 70’s.
This would be a major step back for the national team and I, for one, wouldn't be arsed watching a team under Smith :nono:

:loel: Conte is well at it. The Chelsea players had today off but he has given them an extra 2 days.
It's almost as if he wants to get sacked.

:)

Thought never crossed my mind :ph43r:

I am surprised he isn't away already. He has clearly lost the players and he has a dig at the board at every opportunity. Maybe it's a game to see who blinks first.

Looking at the list of possible contenders I think we would have been as well sticking with Strachan in the circumstances. I think we were moving in the right direction, albeit slowly.

But he ultimately failed to get to a finals (where the path was as easy as it's ever been).

It was time for change, and I would have welcomed Michael O'Neill, but the list of candidates doesn't exactly excite. Steve Clarke would be my choice but can't see him leaving Killie, considering how good a job he is doing there.

Clarke will be wise enough to know he has a shelf life at Kilmarnock. His best players like Jordan Jones and Mulumbu will be gone in the summer along with a lot of the older pros they have on short term deals. He’ll be faced with a constant struggle of rebuilding and sooner or later that will affect results. He should leave while his stock is high.

I would rather see John Collins get a shot.

He’s been closer to Scottish football than Smith has in recent years, he will at least understand what he needs to do and if he can get a decent number 2 then he would do no worse than any other mentioned so far.

I don't think Collins would strike too many people as having the authority to do a job like that. You need people to respond to you, to want to play for you. There's a body of evidence to suggests he's not been capable of that in his coaching/management career.

He can appear a bit aloof, and it's not certain to me that enough people in the game ultimately take him seriously, or that he has staying power when things he is responsible for start to get questioned.

A good example of someone having the right ideas, and decent playing and coaching experience, but ultimately failing on a few other things required in the skill set.

Lennon is the best candidate, but it just isn't going to go that way.

You have to wonder if the SFA are looking at the Italy / Conte / Chelsea saga and thinking they might get away with something similar and get Moyes at the end of the season?

Smith has always been good at spotting opportunities to make himself look good before leaving others to clean up his mess. He’s probably looked at the new set-up of the Euros, which makes it harder for average national teams to fail to qualify than actually qualify. Probably thinks he can take Scotland to Euro 2020, be lauded as the first manager to take us to a major tournament for over 20 years, and then retire and leave some fall guy like McCoist to inherit an ageing team with little or no chance of reaching the World Cup.
That sounds sufficiently snakey for the auld carrot.

What I was getting at was if the list of names we are seeing are to be the only choices then I would have preferred to keep Strachan. There are better managers available surely than the list of duds and has beens we are seeing under consideration.
