Levein was no more than average with Dundee United. Made it to a League cup final (and took the huns to pens I think?) but nothing sensational. Failed in England with Leicester.
Laid the groundwork for some very talented youngsters to come through at Tannadice (and, perhaps coincidentally or perhaps not, the same seems to be happening now at Hearts). Had them in Europe and playing good football. Not suggesting he was another Jim McLean but I thought he did very well with what he had at his disposal and was a worthier candidate for Scotland than the likes of Souness who was being talked up for the job.

It was effectively his team that won the Scottish Cup in 2009/10 season.

He also did well at Hearts in his first stint.

As for Leicester, he wasn't the first and won't be the last manager to go down South from the top league in Scotland and fail.

All true(ish) but none of which made him the outstanding candidate for the gig that he was portrayed as.

He was subsequently shown up to be totally out of his depth and made an utter hash of a relatively soft qualifying group (after Spain it was much of a muchness)

Totally agree about the Scotland job - he should have been removed long before he was.

He never finished above 5th at Dundee Utd. Although I dont remember too many complaints from the Tartan Fannies at the time that he got the job.

It probably tells you something that "his" team won the cup when he was no longer there.

He's an average SPL manager - nothing more, nothing less. And, despite having brought through some decent-ish young players (the vast majority of whom have topped out as no more than journeymen), it is striking that - at both Dundee United and Hearts - he has consistently flooded his squads with panic-bought rubbish.

He is a torn-faced, joyless pumpkin who can't handle criticism and has a record of relentless mediocrity. He should have been nowhere near the Scotland job.

In fairness, the 2008 League Cup Final against the Huns was one of the biggest travesties of recent times.

Kenny Clark denied United the clearest penalty you'll ever see. A blatant foul in the box from Cuellar, in the second half and with United 1-0 up in the game.

At 1-0 up Mark Kerr then decided to inexplicably try a pass back to his keeper with 5 mins to go, straight to Boyd.

Levein is still a carrot though.

He was a decent club manager however was a disaster as Scotland manager so will hardly be considered. The only 2 decent and achievable managers for Scotland would be Stevie Clarke and Neil Lennon.
