I cannot stand the carrot. I'd be distraught if he was ever anywhere near Celtic. Thankfully it will never happen as we don't have £300M to give to him to spends on talent which he would waste. Total carrot that he is.
He won the Uefa Cup & Champions League with a squad assembled that didn't cost much more than us or oldco team's did.
Yeah, but he had access to Brazilians who wouldn't have qualified for any other clubs outwith Portugal and they proved rather important in their success. I despise Mourinho and don't really care what he has or hasn't done in the game. He is a horrible obnoxious carrot and I wish him nothing but trouble.

How many of the teams his Porto side beat could have signed the same players? There were very few who couldn't.

He's a horrible carrot, and like you I don't like him one bit but to say his achievements are down to being able to sign the odd Brazilian is way off the mark.

Porto weren't exactly poor, btw. Most of the CL winning squad was already there when he took over.

I recall reading an article in The Guardian many moons ago (quite possibly about the time of Seville) in which it explained how Porto worked. They kept things absolutely constant irrespective of who the coach was and had everybody at all levels and ages playing the exact same way. Even the financial model was built to support this with as much money being spent on youth development and scouting as anywhere else. The head coach was merely the top of a pyramid and followed/delivered against that model. Hence their success through the years (although I have a sneaky suspicion a new chairman/owner came in at some point and ripped that all up which is why they haven't been as successful of late).

I think it was trying to say that Mourinho was simply a shepherd and not the revolutionary leader/manager/coach that he likes to make himself out to be.

I'm also not fond of him. His antics used to provide a pantomime villain aspect which was mildly entertaining and made it enjoyable when he lost but it's just boring listening to him whinge nowadays.

He also has looked a little unable to cope with the most recent developments of playing styles over the last few years. Football at the top level is more dynamic, high pressing etc. than ever before but he still clings to the same tactics as at Chelsea. Heavily reliant on brute force - with the cynical cheating always present - to break down teams rather than good attacking play/combinations and always parks the bus in any big games, particularly away from home. His record in these games has actually been very poor recently. Particularly galling to see his Real Madrid team containing the talent of Ronaldo et al park the bus in the Champions League.

Anyway, on the Porto achievement, this really can't be downplayed. No matter how much we dislike the guy, it was an incredible feat. This article is an interesting insight into it - http://www.zonalmarking.net/2010/03/08/teams-of-the-decade-3-porto-2002-04/

He just hasn't kept up with the way the game has evolved IMO. He actually looks a bit broken in some recent interviews.

His teams are very cynical in the big games, they do what they need to do to win but I've always thought people over play how defensive Mourinho's teams are. Madrid finished with a goal difference of 89 in one of his seasons. United were a mess when he took over so, again, he did what he needed to do to get results with that team last season. I think he's an excellent manager but I can't stand him, he's a sleekit carrot.

Porto hadn't won the league in 4 years with those players, Mourinho turns up & takes them to levels they've never before been able to reach and then they win back to back league titles alongside the Uefa Cup & Champions League.

They were good players but only Deco & Carvalho were able to sustain playing at the level Mourinho took them to.

Be interesting to compare the Porto 1999 - 2003 spending with us & Oldco.

Martin O’Neill is the bookies favourite for the manager’s job at Stoke, and we understand the club do consider him as one of the strongest candidates, but he is still contracted to the Football Association of Ireland
He has verbally agreed an extension until beyond the 2020 European Championships
