Michael O’Neil is a bit of a feniany name for sevco fans to take to.

I’m not convinced O’Neil is a great manager tbh. I think the stars have aligned for him slightly and he’s hot property just now.

He should make hay while the sun shines and take the US job cos managers in particular can experience a rapid fall from grace. Owen Coyle was being offered the Celtic job and being linked with various premiership teams not that long ago.

Honestly if the USA on the table for O'Neill he'd be mad to turn it down. There's a decent talent base, a relatively simple qualification route (although they bollixed it up this time around) and the wages are better than pretty much anything he'd get here.
USA isn't on offer (for now). The presidency of their federation is up for election in February and they won't appoint a manager before then.

Come to think of it, this probably explains why the SFA are in such a hurry (unusually for them).

this. In a nutshell.

You have hundreds of examples of managers/players who just clicked, and whose fall from grace was as alarming as their rise was spectacular.
See Moyes, Lennon, etc etc.

If the USA is a serious offer, he should be booking a taxi to the airport already.

Pretty much agree. His success with NI has been built on being really hard to beat and well organised. They have one excellent centre half in Evans, and a few decent defenders apart from that. Scotland has Tierney. That's it. I'm not convinced he will see the same success with us.

He's a better option than Malky, Lambert, McLeish etc mind you.

I meant more the fact that Bolton were his option. He thought he'd get much better.

He rushed into it because he wanted to get back in the game, I think if he'd waited he would have got a better offer. Bolton were about to crumble.

If not O'Neill for Scotland then who? It's a pretty uninspiring list of potential managers.

A couple of papers were saying the SFA were going to offer double, or close to double his current wage which is 500k.
Was told money wise looking at 500k from Scotland or Sevco, also said did not have an interest in Sevco or Sunderland job but USA appeals to him along with the 2.5m salary that goes with that but uprooting his family at this time could be an issue
I’d uproot my family to Somalia for £2.5m a year

Plenty in favour of taking the US national team manager job, which is understandable on salary and quality of life grounds. Great opportunity.

I don't think it would stop me being totally bored and detached from it though, in all honesty. If criss crossing the States and Canada watching MLS games every week is your thing, then great. Great way to see a good part of the world.

However it's the same qualification teams over and over again (Mexico last time, Mexico this time), the same Gold Cup tourney (Mexico this time, Mexico last time). It's also about inheriting a pretty lacklustre US squad that now has the expectation of reaching a World Cup, when clearly there are major issues to be resolved.

The Scotland job can be as thankless a task, but if you live and breath football as I suspect Michael O'Neill does, I reckon there is quite a pull in being involved in football where the sport actually seems to matter a bit more.

Nevertheless, if he goes and makes a decent fist of the US, he could maybe cut out a bit of a niche for himself as an international manager gun for hire. The Bora Milutinovic of the 21st century.

The Sun has Tim Sherwood, Gus Poyet and Henning Berg all in the running for the rangers job.

They also have Tommy Wright replacing Michael O'Neil.
Reads like a veritable why's why of football management.

I don't think he'll be forced to deny he was offered the gig at Ibrox because he was a Catholic, anyway.

I know things have changed over there beyond anything Aldous Huxley could have predicted, but I doubt I'll ever hear the words "I'm not here to say Mass" coming out the mouth of their new Irish boss.

Sherwood did well at Spurs and was unlucky to get sacked

Disaster at Villa
In no way did Sherwood do well at Spurs.

I agree.

In his two qualifying campaigns he's had piss easy groups. The Euro's had Greece, Faroe Islands, Finland, Hungary and Romania. And the WC group was San Marino, Azerbaijan, Czech Rep, Norway and Germany.

Meanwhile Scotland have had total carrots of groups. Germany, Poland, ROI and ourselves for 3 places. Then we got scudded with England, Slovenia and Slovakia battling it out for 2 places.

On the face of it, sure, NI qualifying is an achievement. But you scratch the surface and look what he's working with. A 'back 6' of McGovern, McAuley, Evans, Brunt, Davies and Hughes. Hughes aside, that's easily a mid-table Premier League defence.
