Said it before, I'll say it again. Levein is the problem.
The problem is that Budge can't see past Levein.
Doubt Hartley would change that, she'd no be able to see by either of them.

To me they should go for Tommy Wright, but I doubt he'd work with CL, in all honesty they as a club need to make the right choice, I'm not convinced they will.

You're spot on in every aspect of this post.

However, I can't see anyone being able to work with Levein. Hearts have a real chance to succeed, but that would (in my opinion) depend on Levein getting his jotters

Aye, fair enough.

What type of manager do you think you should realistically be aiming for, given Levein's role?

It seems to me that Levein has the easiest job in Scottish football. I've said it on here before but, to my mind, he was basically found out as a manager and has subsequently managed to hide himself away in a role where he can play Champ Man without being the one getting the flak on the touchline and in the press.

If I were Budge, I'd bullet him and get a real manager in.
I think Levein's role is genuinely overstated. Nobody questioned it when things were going well. The signings made this summer were clearly made by Austin MacPhee. The only signing with a link to Levein was Berra, and he basically approached the club to ask if they'd let him join, which obviously they were going to agree to.

I've said it before, Levein's teams weren't always exciting, but they were always defensively solid first and foremost. Cathro's team never was, at any point.

My dream choice is Michael O'Neill. I'd take a Tommy Wright or Peter Houston. I love Paul Hartley but I'm not sure he's right for us just now.
Is Pressley available? If so, would you be happy with him?

For me, the person who has fallen most victim to the Cathro experiment is Austin McPhee. I've really enjoyed him speaking, when I've heard him, and I like his attitude and philosophy.

If he is really the issue, Why doesn't Levein just take over as manager?

He has done reasonably well with Hearts and DU in the past.

I think he's happy where he is; using the manager as a shield.

Budge could always get Jackie McNamara back up the road (railway?) from York.
Did well at Partick, never worked out at Dundee Utd or York and is currently their CEO.

When you see his credentials laid out like that, I'm surprised they haven't already announced his appointment.

Levein is clearly a destructive influence at Tynecastle, but it's utterly deluded to claim he is responsible for Cathro being an utterly pathetic manager.

They should go for Jack Ross.

Pretty sure he was a youth coach there a couple of years back
I think he left Hearts under pretty acrimonious circumstances. Possibly another one who has fallen out with Levein.

What is it that Levein does which seemingly makes him so toxic? I noticed Arsene Wenger belittling the role of director of football recently, arguing that he has no idea what it's meant to entail. Kind of sums up my views on it.

Like most clubs, they have had a few belters in over the years!! That Lithuanian guy, Burley, Rix, and Cathro etc.

Wonder what Rudi Skacel is up to these days?

Given that the manager has the most important role at the club, it is ludicrous that Budge has allowed a situation where the person at the club most qualified to do the job is sitting in the director's box, no doubt picking up a higher salary than the poor sap in the dugout.

Burley had them performing really well, then Mad Vlad got involved

No' sure he really deserves to be included there. I'm not saying he would have kept up their good form, but no one knows how it would have turned out if that eejit hadn't got involved.

A Tommy Wright ?

There's one near me looking for a start , he's got some commitments with the local Homing Pigeon Society but i'm sure he could work around them if the money's right. Get Anne to PM if she wants his number bud .

We'd still have won the league that Hearts side were good but you'd lucky if more than 1 or 2 of their players would have got in our team.

Player for player Feck had a better team at Oldco but finished behind them
