Said it before, I'll say it again. Levein is the problem.
The problem is that Budge can't see past Levein.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
A lot of guys on here dismiss footballers' predictions about how successful a manager will be at leading his team, as if a career-long experience of dressing-room & training ground dynamics, or having worked with the manager before is irrelevant because the footballer didn't get 5 Highers at school.
Boyd didnt just give a prediction though, he gave a full on character assassination and the only reason he had to back up anything he said was that the guy had never been a pro player.

Lots of people on here also predicted Cathro would fail, but at least respect that he is an experienced and well educated coach, who probably deserved at least a chance.
There were far more brutal assessments of Cathro's personality on here once we all saw his press conferences. But Boyd already knew what Cathro was like because they had been on a coaching course together. In retrospect it is easy to see why Boyd didn't think Cathro had the personality to transition from coach to manager.

I do feel sorry for the guy as he was clearly out of his depth. I don't think anyone has ever said Cathro was a bad coach, so hopefully he can go back to a successful career in that.

Hearts actually have one of the better youth set-ups and scouting arrangements in Scotland. Their overall operation from youths up is good. The interference of Levein in first team is the problem.
Is it him and his dodgy agent pals who are bringing all the pish over?

That's no way to talk about an ex-Celtic legend.

What an absolutely disastrous appointment. I felt sorry for him at first but his arrogance just bothered me way too much.
Think Hartley will get the gig.
Would he be willing to work under Levein?

Sad that the luddites who mocked him from day one will be, "proven right."
Thing is, they were right.

Kris Boyd basically said that he had no man management skills and that he would fail for that reason. That's not the whole story, but it does seem to be part of it.

People will focus on that, but that's missing the main point - at his core, even his tactics were horrendous. Doesn't even take man management into account. The players liked him, by all accounts.

The next appointment's critical.

Aye, fair enough.

What type of manager do you think you should realistically be aiming for, given Levein's role?

It seems to me that Levein has the easiest job in Scottish football. I've said it on here before but, to my mind, he was basically found out as a manager and has subsequently managed to hide himself away in a role where he can play Champ Man without being the one getting the flak on the touchline and in the press.

If I were Budge, I'd bullet him and get a real manager in.

Budge could always get Jackie McNamara back up the road (railway?) from York.
Did well at Partick, never worked out at Dundee Utd or York and is currently their CEO.

Tommy Wright would be a success there.

I think Levein's role is genuinely overstated. Nobody questioned it when things were going well. The signings made this summer were clearly made by Austin MacPhee. The only signing with a link to Levein was Berra, and he basically approached the club to ask if they'd let him join, which obviously they were going to agree to.

I've said it before, Levein's teams weren't always exciting, but they were always defensively solid first and foremost. Cathro's team never was, at any point.

My dream choice is Michael O'Neill. I'd take a Tommy Wright or Peter Houston. I love Paul Hartley but I'm not sure he's right for us just now.

Heard from someone on the medical team the whole place is a shambles. Cathro had the personality of a house brick and Levine is a horrible carrot.

Hartley is pretty old school when it comes to all things coaching and mangement etc. Wouldn't be a visionary appointment but he'd be cheap as he's not in a job just now. Did he play with Levine ?

Peter Houston would Hearts best bet imo, he's done a decent job at Falkirk.

Alan Archibald, Hartley or Tommy Wright would probably do ok too.

Hearts signed a lot of muck last season. It's whoever signed those players who should be sacked, if they aren't already.

They should go for Jack Ross.

Pretty sure he was a youth coach there a couple of years back
