Surprised that the roles were not reversed when appointed. Austin McPhee is the more natural leader - rather than a number 2. I wonder if Hearts will try and keep him on in some capacity.
He comes across as a knob as well. They're needing shot of the full whack from Levein to the scouts.

Funny that an Ian Cathro Hearts team still managed to pump Sevco 4-1.
Was that not Neilsons last game for Hearts?

Their problem is Levein. Unless he's willing to cede control they'll get another coaching academy yes man. The list of people that Levein has fallen out with in his career might be a good indication of just how much of a liability he is himself professionally.

Clearly, that doesn't extend to Houston, and given their relationship and Hearts need it seems to make sense that he'll get it. I can't see obvious candidates like Hartley, Pressley or Tommy Wright taking too much of his pish without the usual consequences.

Hearts actually have one of the better youth set-ups and scouting arrangements in Scotland. Their overall operation from youths up is good. The interference of Levein in first team is the problem.

As I mentioned in the Betfred thread a few days ago, I wanted him to be a success but then he went and signed Lafferty so feck them all.

Is it him and his dodgy agent pals who are bringing all the pish over?

I know their youth setup is one of the better ones, but whoever is doing their 1st team scouting is needing the boot.

They beat them twice at Tynecastle.

Whoever takes over is going to be stuck with all the duds that Cathro signed. That might not appeal to Hartley.
Wonder if there are any young Scottish managers who might be short on cash at the moment and looking for a job… :ponder:

I can understand why he was sacked, after watching them at the weekend. No recognisable style of play. Playing three centre backs requires at least one of them to be a "good footballer". His three centre backs look nervous with the ball at their feet so can't start attacks from the back. His two central midfielders aren't exactly guys who want to dictate tempo. Difficult to see where a consistent run of form would come from so the natural decision was to get rid. Hopefully he doesn't leave the game completely, and goes on to be a first team coach somewhere.

Nah they beat Sevco 2-0 in Neilsons last game. The 4-1 game Cathro was in charge and it turned out to be the magic hats last game.

Cathro, quelle surprise. The scattergun appraoch to signing players and his odd choices of lineups and selections were baffling to say the least...Connor Sammon out wide and leaving Walker out altogether on Sunday prime examples.
He is the football equivalent of someone who can look good in "laboratory" conditions and talk a good game about his ideas etc whilst explaining them using flow charts and diagrams but in the real world he is lost. Being Levein's lap dog didn't do him any favours either.

Cathro wasn't identified as manager material when Levein initially wanted him at Tynecastle. It was a similar role to the one he was doing at Newcastle but understandably he wasn't keen on taking a huge cut in salary to head North just for that job.

So he got the boss' gig instead but of course too much interference from above.

Hard to think of worse timing for this. They've got an acknowledged shortfall of a couple of million on the new stand, have laid out plenty on new players with the squad largely in place to the specification of the former coach, and they are presumably paying up Cathro's contract on gardening leave.

Doesn't leave too many pennies to go recruiting anyone good you'd imagine.

And four away games coming up in a row, including first up a trip to us and also a visit to Ibrox. They could be in all sorts doo doo by the time they open that stand when the Sheep come calling, if they even get it ready in time.

Better the now than when they're three adrift in late November.

Struggling to think of a more disastrous appointment than Cathro in recent times.

Took over when they were third and in the European places. Ended up fifth and without European football. To achieve fourth, at the time of Cathro's first game all they needed to be level with St Johnstone was 31 points from 22 games. He managed 19 points in 22 games. Ouch.

Then this season after the clean slate he gets them eliminated from the League Cup before the League season has even started, despite being in a Group with Peterhead and East Fife.

For a club building a new stand at pretty substantial cost, that's two pretty decent potential revenues streams gone through just a simple lack of basic ability to set up a team.

All on the back of what had been a fairly promising 30 months under Neilson up to that point, hilarious cup debacles against Hibs and Birkirkara aside.
Anthony Scaramucci is on a par.
