Arsenal only have to look at Man U to see how badly a decision to replace a long term coach can go.

Clubs whose structure involves changing the manager every couple of years can do so as they're built to take it.

Pulling a Fergie or Wenger out of a club they've basically built and run for the entire modern era of football is a massive shock, even with succession planning.
For all wenger's dynasty what has he actually done with the club over that time, his trophy return is nothing to shout about.

He's got an eye for a young player and obviously has built a great network but how many were actually produced by arsenal? Without checking I can't think of any top players who have come from their youth. They're all lifted from the fringes at Southampton and the like. Ferguson built an academy which yielded top class football players.

Maybe his remit was just to qualify CL so they could pay for their pad. Now that's out of the way he doesn't even have to do that anymore.
Ashley Cole.

Maybe. Wenger had only been there 2/3 year when Cole made his first team debut. No doubt Wenger had an impact on his career but Cole must have been a fair way through the Arsenal system by the time he took the job.

Don't see Jose winning the league at Man U tbh - he's a busted flush I reckon and a right wrong un.
Jose Mourinho is absolutely not anywhere close to a busted flush.

He's still comfortably one of the finest football managers in the game, and I despise the carrot. How quickly people forget...

He changed the perception and culture of the football club - that's his greatest legacy.

Since Wenger, Arsenal have been and probably are the likeable / fashionable team largely based on style of football (accept some of that is also because they haven't had long periods of domination or overspent).

That's the complete opposite of what they have been historically. Not a bad legacy but of course harder to measure than trophies.

Wenger teams have never been likeable.

All of them have had a nasty/petulant streak running through them, especially when things get tough - a reflection of the man himself.

For all the FA Cups he's won, Wenger will always cast an envious glance at those like Guardiola, Mourinho and Benitez who have won the biggest prize of all - the Champions League.

It's also a huge bone of contention with many gooners that one of the weakest Chelsea sides of the past decade were able to land that particular prize and become the first London side to do so.

Pre-2004, Arsenal's status as London's top club was virtually unchallenged. It's a different story now, though. Chelsea and Tottenham have both overtaken them and are likely to pull away during the next few years.

I think his record in the 21 years he has been at the club has been better than the 21 years before he arrived.

3 league titles to 2
7 FA Cups to 2

Although there were 2 League Cups and a Cup Winners Cup (bring it back!!) in the preceding 21 years. Wenger has also achieved two European final losses, not too much of a boast but still a decent achievement.

But more than on the pitch is the way he lead all before off the pitch. State of the art training facilities opened in 1999. That is 5 years before Chelsea moved to theirs, 15 years before Man City, Southampton and Swansea, 13 before Spurs,11 before Stoke, 8 years before Everton and a year before United all moved to new facilities.

Their stadium, maybe a little soulless (blame the fans) is a lovely place to watch football. Once again they moved before all of their rivals (Spurs next year or two, Chelsea the same, Liverpool been trying for years only recently increasing capacity) spent any money upgrading or moving to new purpose built grounds. They also made sure they went unique rather than for the cheaper 'off the shelf, identikit' stadiums that you see at smaller clubs like Southampton, Middlesbrough, Derby and up and down the rest of the English Leagues.

I think he changed the way clubs in England looked at football and footballers.

I think McInnes to Sunderland is on

The sheep have just released 8 ( 4 first teamers ) and I doubt McInnes will get the funds to replace them, his stock can't get higher than it currently is - being Bains bud certainly helps

Ah well, Celtic will just have to batter Sunderland in pre season this summer then lol

Who replaces him?
Stubbs? Hartley? McLeish ?!?

They could do worse than go down a similar route to Huddersfield.

Get a young foreign coach in to lay down some foundations.

surely it would be McLeish , always been a Ranjurs , i mean Aberdeen man and all that

If McInnes goes to Sunderland i hope he has a long hard think first , its not a club thats enhanced many peoples careers . He would be better waiting till the end of the year and taking the Ranjurs job when it comes up.

I'd guess it'll be more like February/March time. Then Big Eck can come home to get planning on 55.

*edit to say i've assumed McInnes is going to England in that scenario.

Sheep would do well to get Alex Neil in I think if McInnes were to go down south.

I think he'd be a cracking signing and likely to put things in place long term but they will probably go for someone cheap and gash.

Interesting, Brendan had him in and around Lennoxtown after Hartley was sacked by Dundee did he not ?

It ended poorly for him at Dundee but overall I think Hartley is a decent enough manager and this could be a good move for him and us.

It's failure by his own standards not those that came before him.

He's been there since 1996 to split his reign in to 10 years & then 11.

The first 10, 3 League wins, 2 doubles, 1 season unbeaten. FA Cup wins in 1998, 2002, 2003 & 2005. They should have won the Champions League final in 2006 but Henrik wrecked that & they finished either first or second in 9 of those 10 years.

The next 11 years, FA Cup wins in 2014,2015 & 2017, lost the League Cup final in 2007 & 2011 & have finished 2nd once in that time.

He was once a brilliant manager, he's well past his best but I don't enjoy watching the ridicule he gets now although alot of it is bloody well deserved.
