Good to hear Brendan is more than happy with their fitness levels on their return which should help getting them up to speed sooner rather than later.
The comment about Billy McNeill tends to suggest he knows where the arrows are being pointed and the problems are - Midfield and upfront we are in reasonably good nick - Moussa hanging around and a winger would be a bonus but the defence needs sorted big time - Defensively he has what he has just now and has to back them publicly but I hope behind his laid back take on it we are working like feck to get some quality in - We need a RB/CB and cover for Tierney - They know the CL is where the dosh is - We wont progress and may struggle for the Group Stages unless we strengthen.
Fwiw - In terms of the defence I doubt we will get all three positions covered with quality signings but they are needed.

The fitness level thing should mean that there is less chance of picking up injuries ahead of the qualifiers. If we go to them with a full strength squad we shouldn't have problems getting through.

I think he has taken this defence as far as he can in terms of coaching what he has and if we are to progress then we need quality in for those positions you mention.

Billy was immense in the air, and a formidable leader; but he was absolutely useless on the deck, as evidenced by his woeful penalty attempt in the 3-3 draw with Benfica. He also cost us in Europe three seasons running; nowadays there would be wielding fans demonstrating in the car park.

Tom Rogic is out of Celtic’s crunch Champions League opener against Alashkert. And boss Brendan Rodgers last night revealed key defenders Dedryck Boyata and Mikael Lustig could miss the first two qualifying rounds as he insists on proper recovery time for his World Cup stars. Rodgers is keeping a close eye on the progress of his Russia 2018 stars while the rest of the squad work at their training camp in Austria. The opening Euro tie is just 11 days away in Armenia – but the manager has set aside an automatic fortnight’s rest for each player when their respective World Cup campaigns are over. Rogic and Cristian Gamboa are both out after the group-stage exits of Australia and Costa Rica. Although Gamboa has been a fringe player, Rogic is a key man in the set-up – but the Aussie won’t be rushed back for the gruelling trip to Armenia. Rodgers said: “He’ll have two weeks off from now, so he’ll be back when we arrive home from the first leg. He’ll be back training on July 12. “He won’t be playing in the first leg, it’s a long season for us and he’s just off the back of a World Cup. So he’ll have two weeks free then come back fresh and ready for, hopefully, another exciting season.” Rodgers is keeping the same recovery time spare for Boyata and Lustig, even though it could mean them potentially missing as many as four ties if either Belgium or Sweden go all the way and reach the World Cup Final on July 15. Both defenders are into the last 16 of the competition and their manager said: “I’m obviously delighted for Mika because it’s a brilliant result Sweden have had. “Dedryck has gone in and looked very good in his games and Belgium are through as well. “That is great and we hope they can do well. Hopefully they can stay injury free, so we get them back fit and ready. “All the boys from when they go out [of the tournament] have got two weeks.” https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/tom-rogic

Celtic are guaranteed to bank close to £800,000 from the World Cup after Dedryck Boyata and Mikael Lustig reached the last-16. Celtic earn £6,380 per player each day they are at the World Cup.
That comes into effect a fortnight prior to the start of the competition, meaning Boyata, Lustig, Rogic and Gamboa have already secured Celtic around £715,000.
Boyata and Lustig both reached the last-16 and will be involved in the competition for at least another five days which earns Celtic a further £63,800

MOUSSA DEMBELE is ready to beef up Celtic’s Euro bid — after shedding pounds over the summer. The striker is expected to make his pre-season debut against Sparta Prague. Boss Brendan Rodgers revealed the Frenchman looks trim and he expects him to be flying for the Champions League opener with Alashkert. He said: “Moussa came back a bit later than everyone else, but he looks really, really fit. “He’s lost weight, he looks really good in his running. He’ll be fine. “Moussa had a slight issue with his knee the other day and we took him out of one of the sessions. “We didn’t want to risk it and push him for the Bohemians game on Saturday, but he’ll be involved on Tuesday. “All the players will be undercooked in terms of games, that’s the reality. “But Moussa’s returned in good condition and we still have time to go.” Scott Allan and Ryan Christie have featured for Celtic in Austria after returning from loans at Hibs and Aberdeen. Rodgers insists they’ll get more chances to impress in a bid to become regulars. He said: “The two boys have come back and my duty to them is to make sure they are at their highest level fitness wise. “Then we’ll see over the course of the pre-season. Both players have looked very good. “When I look at Ryan’s situation, it was to get him out and get him stronger. The Aberdeen loan was perfect for him. “It’s partly where these boys see themselves as well. “I might want to keep them but if I can’t give them as many games as they want it’s difficult. “But both boys have come back looking strong and looking fit and have done very well. “I never rule out any player. I use my eyes, at how they train, I look at their commitment. “You mention a guy like Dedryck Boyata. “You get players that initially were out of the team, but they get better and they improve. “Then all of a sudden they are in the team and they are performing very well. “So I don’t rule out any player, especially when you’ve got good players.” https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/brendan-rodgers[/URL

BRENDAN RODGERS can remember around this time last summer having that Sinc-ing feeling. The Hoops boss had gathered his Invincibles for the start of what turned out to be another Treble-winning campaign. But Rodgers glanced at reigning Player of the Year Scott Sinclair and knew something wasn’t right. The winger looked jaded, and his gaffer’s fears were confirmed as a disappointing individual season followed for the Englishman. Yet 12 months on, Rodgers revealed he expects Sinclair to be right back to his best. The manager said: “Scott has come back super hungry and you can see the difference in him. “The first two weeks he has come back as the Scott Sinclair I have known from Chelsea, Swansea and the one I brought here in the first year. “Last summer was the first time in his career where he never really had a break. “I felt in the first day of pre-season that Scott didn’t look fresh. “Then you have to go and play in games, and we are the sort of team where we need our players with big energy. “If you don’t have that then it is tough and it stands out. He reflected on that, because I talked to him at the end of last season. “In the week leading up to the Scottish Cup final, we spoke in terms of what he had to get back to. “We told him to clear his mind again, because he had set such high standards in his first season. “He still did very well last season and he wants to get back to the level he was and we know he can play at. “Scott stood out like a sore thumb in how good he was in that first season. How quick, fast and dynamic he was.” Sinclair’s value soared after his 33-goal debut campaign, but Rodgers insists he’s not the first player to dip. He said: “It is natural — how many times have we seen it? “Stefan Johansen won all the Player of the Year awards here and the following season it didn’t really happen for him. “It is tough and natural but Scott will be okay this year. “He can absolutely, and we can see there is now a different dynamic and hunger to his game.” Celtic comfortably won the Premiership last season but failed to hit the record-breaking stats of 2016-17. The gap between the Hoops and second-placed Aberdeen was down to nine points from 30. The goal tally fell from 106 to just 73, with Celtic drawing 10 games and losing four. Rodgers felt injuries to Moussa Dembele, Leigh Griffiths, Tom Rogic, Stuart Armstrong and Patrick Roberts contributed to that. The Celtic boss insists his champions don’t deserve stick for last season, but he does expect improvement. He said: “I’m not worried. We set out to win the league, the League Cup and Scottish Cup and we did. “It is almost as if now it is just deemed to be a Treble. “Now it is just the double Treble and people have asked, ‘Why was the team not so good?’. “I’m really not bothered. We set out to improve and we’ll look to do exactly the same this year. “Of course, we want to win as many points as we can, and we certainly dropped too many at home in draws last season. “So that’s one we need to look at — and we didn’t score as many goals. “Scott Sinclair was our top goalscorer last year and he wasn’t even in the team every week. “Our tally was 106 to 73, and there were many reasons for that, not just us, but we did okay. “But if we are always looking to continually progress then you can never get comfortable. “The players have been brilliant and I feel there is a great exciting period ahead of us with them. “After the Invincible year, there was maybe a sense of ‘Right, okay, what an incredible season, can we do it again?’. “Well, we won the Treble again, but I see a difference in them in the way they’ve come back in this year. “There’s an authority and an aggression there and a real focus and belief that we can do it again.” Two years into his Celtic reign, Rodgers’ team is still packed full of players he inherited from previous bosses. That is a surprising aspect of his success, but it was never his intention to rip the squad to shreds. Rodgers said: “It pleases me, because I’m a coach. My natural environment is on the grass. “I didn’t want to come in and just overhaul everything. I’m always one to go in and have a look and see if we can improve players, not throw them to the garbage. “It’s great credit to Ronny Deila, who brought some of these players in, and some of the players were here before him. “My job was always to come in and make it the best it could be and be a good ancestor, really. “In terms of should I have had more players in, it’s very difficult to replace very, very good players. “The only way you do that is by buying in big players for big money, and that isn’t really the model here.” https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scott-sinclair

BRENDAN RODGERS has revealed Dorus de Vries could leave Celtic this summer.
The 37-year-old Dutch goalkeeper missed the Hoops’ Austrian training camp due to a coaching course with the Welsh FA.
De Vries is behind Craig Gordon and Scott Bain in the pecking order and could move on.
Rodgers said: “Dorus is going into the final year of his contract. We’ve spoken about his situation.
“There are goalkeepers ahead of him but he can still be around helping the young keepers.
“Dorus is a good guy.
“He was brought in for a purpose and he has served that purpose.
“With a year to go he has to decide to play and later move into coaching, or go down that route.”

Meanwhile, Jonny Hayes will miss Celtic’s Champions League opener with Alashkert.
The winger injured his calf and had to go off in the first half of Saturday’s friendly defeat to Bohemians.
Celtic were last night linked with a loan move for Liverpool’s Harry Wilson. The 21-year-old winger spent last season on loan at Hull and is a player Rodgers knows well.

BRENDAN RODGERS can’t guarantee Moussa Dembele will still be at Celtic if they reach the Champions League. But the Hoops boss is certain the fired-up French striker will do everything in his power to get them there. Dembele will be a wanted man across Europe in this window, with Borussia Dortmund among those tracking him. Rodgers knows Dembele, 21, will move on eventually. With just two years left on his deal, it could even be this summer. Yet Rodgers insists Dembele is fully focused on the Hoops’ Euro bid. Rodgers said: “What I know with Moussa is that nothing affects him really. He’s a good boy. I think there was a little period in my time, but apart from that, he’s been absolutely brilliant. “Moussa is really focused. He is a really happy boy and he’s great to work with. I love him. “He knows a move will come for him at some point, and there is nothing he can do other than work hard in training and play well in games. “Moussa has done that for the majority of time I’ve been here. He can only play well, work hard and see what happens.” Dembele scored a stunning winner against Sparta Prague on Tuesday, and left Rodgers raving about his display. Dembele gave his markers a torrid time in his 45 minute outing, and the Celtic gaffer believes he’s getting better all the time. Rodgers added: “Moussa has a belief that he is a player, and that is important because you need to have that personality. “But it is handy when you back it up. That’s what I look for. Moussa backs it up and shows it on the field. “I said he had lost weight when he came back, and he looked really fit and strong against Sparta Prague.” Dembele partnered new signing Odsonne Edouard up front in a 3-5-2 formation rarely used by Rodgers. It worked a treat as the French duo combined to constantly open up Sparta in the first half. Dembele should have had a hat-trick, and appeared to relish having a partner to feed off. With Leigh Griffiths also pushing for a regular start, Rodgers hinted he may use a front two more often. Rodgers said: “My style will always be the same, but my systems can change. In terms of style, the rules are simple in that we have to attack with aggression and intensity, and we have to dominate. “When we do that, we can create chances. “But I like them to be flexible tactically, and having an option to do that is very good. “Playing the two up front worked well for us against Sparta. Dembele and Edouard linked up really well. “What I try to have is real competition in that attacking area. Dembele and Griffiths were injured for periods, and at times we didn’t have that extra striker. “But I didn’t want to just bring in anyone, so to sign Edouard with his quality and potential was important. “All three strikers are fighting for a place, and we are going to need all three to play the number of games we are hopefully going to play.” Rodgers has an abundance of attacking talent at his disposal ahead of the first-leg qualifier against Alashkert next week. But Rodgers has a growing headache at the back, with Mikael Lustig and Dedryck Boyata now in the World Cup quarter-finals. Their involvement with Sweden and Belgium means both players are now likely to miss at least three Euro qualifiers. Rodgers could do without that, but insists he’s happy to see them enjoy success in Russia. Rodgers added: “It’s brilliant for them, although we’ve got to sort this back four out! “It’s fantastic for them. I’ve been in contact with them throughout the tournament by text. “I’m delighted for Boyata. He’s had a great run in the Belgian side before being replaced by Vincent Kompany. But Boyata is still very much a part of their squad. It’s brilliant, and the quarter-final against Brazil will be good for him. “We also heard the Sweden result after our last game in Austria, so for Lustig it’s absolutely brilliant. “It’s great for them, I’m delighted for them both.” Nir Bitton filled in at centre-back last summer for Celts, but Rodgers confirmed he’s still months away from a return. Israeli ace Bitton had a knee op earlier this year, and will miss all of the Hoops’ Euro qualifiers. Rodgers said: “Nir is still in rehab. He’s probably going to be out until September time. “That was the target from when he had the operation, so we have him pencilled in for then.” Rodgers is confident winger Lewis Morgan will be available for the Alashkert tie, after picking up an injury in Austria. Rodgers added: “Lewis has a minor problem behind his knee, but he should be fine for next week.” https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/rodgers-moussa-dembele

BR saying players may come and players may go, some soon, some later and some maybe never.
INS & OUTS Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers on Everton target Kieran Tierney and Hibs star John McGinn – as he responds to Shay Logan’s racist abuse claims The Hoops had an initial bid rejected for 23-year-old McGinn while the Toffees may test their resolve with a huge offer for full-back Tierney
Spoiler: click to toggle By Gareth Law BRENDAN RODGERS admits he’s still hopeful of adding John McGinn to his squad. The Celtic boss saw an initial £1.5million bid for the midfielder thrown out by Hibs. But he insists the fight isn’t over. Asked for the latest on McGinn, Rodgers said: “Nothing. I just wait to see what happens between the clubs. I’ve nothing more to say on that. Is it still a live matter? Yeah, I think it’s what happens in negotiations. “That will be organised, hopefully, between the two clubs and hopefully we have another player. “We want to get players in as soon as we can. If it’s not to be, you have to wait. You have to be patient.” Rodgers refused to comment on moves to land Liverpool winger Harry Wilson on loan. He did, though, insist Kieran Tierney is in the right frame of mind despite Everton preparing to splash £25million on the 21-year-old. Asked if there was any update on Tierney ahead of the friendly with Shamrock Rovers, Rodgers said: “I haven’t been told anything different. “Kieran has been absolutely brilliant, as per normal. He is totally focused and, thankfully, he is at a club he loves. “He’s still trying to get fit, still learning. There has been no change in Kieran. Absolutely nothing fazes him. “He’s a wonderful talent, a great boy to work with, everything you would want as a manager.” Rodgers also defended Hoops fans after Shay Logan claimed he had been racially abused at Parkhead on the final day of the Premiership season. The Aberdeen right-back saw red after the final whistle following a clash with Mikael Lustig and Dedryck Boyata while celebrating their 1-0 win. Former Hoops player Aleksandr Tonev was banned for seven games after Logan claimed he had racially abused him at the stadium in 2014. After reportedly being asked if the abuse he suffered as he walked down the tunnel in May was racial, he said: “Listen there was, but at the end of the day I expect it now. “It’s so forgotten about that it’s just the way it is. There’s no crying or moaning about it, at the end of the day I’ve got three kids who love me. “I deal with it. Let them say whatever they want. We move on.” But Rodgers said: “It’s not something you would ever want to see anywhere. “There has obviously been an ongoing thing with young Shay since an incident I was made aware of when I first came in. “But the Celtic supporters were voted the best in the world. I think that says it all in terms of the ambience at the stadium and how they behave themselves. “It’s not something I want to go into and it’s not something the Celtic supporters are ever renowned for. “It’s a wonderful atmosphere at Celtic Park. It probably doesn’t help yourself if you walk about after the game and make all sorts of gestures. “But the Celtic supporters have been given their title last year and there’s a reason why. So there’s no other comment.” https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/2893859/celtic-brendan-rodgers-kieran-tierney-hibs-john-mcginn-shay-logan-aberdeen/

BR saying players may come and players may go, some soon, some later and some maybe never. INS & OUTS Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers on Everton target Kieran Tierney and Hibs star John McGinn – as he responds to Shay Logan’s racist abuse claimsThe Hoops had an initial bid rejected for 23-year-old McGinn while the Toffees may test their resolve with a huge offer for full-back Tierney Spoiler: click to toggle By Gareth Law BRENDAN RODGERS admits he’s still hopeful of adding John McGinn to his squad. Shay Login is an utter fud. Wouldn't believe a word that comes out of his mouth.
As for loving all the stick he gets, good for him. He's a pish footballer who finally won a game against us that we weren't overly bothered about winning. His team also regularly shampoos the bed against Sevco, gets knocked out of Europe usually at the first opportunity, and pishes their knickers at the thought of Hampden.
He's a vital cog in clunky machine, so if he thinks he's been inspired by Celtic fans to greater heights, he's starting from a ridiculously low base. He's that much of a dick, the only surprise is the huns haven't signed him.
