I'm not really into moaning about us of all teams spending money, the fees and wages in general are fantastic these days and not spending money when we should is far more upsetting, in this case it's wages only and no fee to take a dip on. Whether it could be better spent is up for some debate but that's subjective, there are no guarantees in football when you take on a player, never. We are winning everything, qualifying for CL and planning for a blooming hotel, I'm not going to start complaining about us spending cash when every signing is a risk. Spend more Celtic.

Brendan Rodgers, 9 April 2018:
"It was difficult for Marvin because he was injured in Dubai during the winter break, which put him out for a while. During that period young Kris has come into the team and been absolutely outstanding. So there have been others ahead of Marvin. His (Compper's) qualities are pretty clear for us, his experience and his
way of working with the younger guys in training. Of course he wants to play as well but these aren’t fitness games we’re playing. I’m certainly not sentimental. We need to pick a team that gets the results. I’ll make a change if I don’t like the way we’re playing. It’s always been irrespective of age for me."
Given people like to use Rodgers' every single word to help explain their agenda, i.e. they like to throw his words about Musonda back at him, it is a bit curious to me why nobody has referred to the above. Of course it makes more sense for this to be PR double speak.
Seems to me that here's a manager who knows we're at the business end of the season and is not totally sold on throwing a player in who missed his window between late Jan and March to bed in through injury, and wants to adopt the tried and trusted in the games that will win us the title and get us to the Cup Final, and probably even win the Treble itself.
I don't see any issue or contradiction in that at all. It's not like we've been shipping three per game. We've mainly recorded clean sheets. He's gone with the players that have got us to that point, and the new defensive signings that have been available for selection (Bain and Hendry).

I was thinking much the same as you even before seeing those comments, particularly regarding the business end of the season. He makes it as clear as day, no need for any alternative picture to be painted or ulterior manifestation.

tbh. I think musonda was signed on an 18 month deal to give him 6 months to get up to speed with next season being the target.
Commper, might just be a case of someone taking longer to settle in than expected. I'll judge him when he starts playing...
Both are yet to prove Brendan Rodgers either right or wrong in their acquisition.
I think Commper will be punted before we see him play again. Heard a story about his behaviour in Dubai. Not repeatable. Dismissed it as nonsense but I wonder.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deepNo effing player who gets a game for the Chelsea first team the week prior to signing for us should need any 'bedding in' time.
It's ludicrous. No player who has never set foot in Scotland before or met any of his new teammates should need a bedding in time. It just sounds as if you're trying to out-moan every other moany carrot on the thread like there's a prize for setting a record
That's not the point I was trying to make though. It was making a comparison between the assumed readiness. If a player, any player, can be ready enough to play first team football for Chelsea one week, it's not unreasonable to expect he'd also be ready to play first team football for Celtic. There's a lot of people now saying he needs time to bed in and it feels like those comments are mostly trying to deflect criticism from the boss for not playing him but it's perfectly valid criticism and it's perfectly reasonable to ask questions around why he isn't getting more time. He got a sub appearance right after joining and then got a start the next week, so it's clear Brendan thought he was ready (and makes a mockery of the bedding in time comments). Instead of just allowing the valid line of questioning around why Brendan leaves him on the bench in a game where we're creating next to bugger all against lowly Hamilton, it's excuses from all sides. Anything to ensure we don't ask difficult questions of the boss. We're paying the guy a fortune and he signed this boy - who we're also paying a fortune to by all accounts - and the speed at which people seem to want to shut down any perceived criticism is taking the piss a bit. He trained every week with those players at Chelsea, so being able to play a game with them and fit in well is a totally different scenario to knowing our tactics and knowing our players. It's genuinely mental to think that a young guy should arrive here and instantly fit in so well that it looks like he's been here all season. Yeah it's disappointing that he hasn't looked like a class above everything around him, but to claim that he needs no bedding in time at all is from another planet.

Yeah it's disappointing that he hasn't looked like a class above everything around him, but to claim that he needs no bedding in time at all is from another planet. We did something similar with Roberts when he arrived - albeit with a different management team. We've got 18 months to develop Musonda so there's no tearing rush to play him every single week.
The context of his first appearances is noteworthy too: he was given a starting spot at a time when Roberts, Rogic, Hayes and Armstrong were injured. Guys like Mikey Johnston were getting a game around then too. We'd tried Ntcham and McGregor at no.10, largely to no effect, so it was worth giving Musonda a game at that point. The reality is that he's not going to get a game ahead of Rogic, Forrest, Roberts and Sinclair at this stage in his development.
Some of the signings haven't been great, no doubt about it, but maybe in Musonda's case, it's a well-conceived plan rather than an admission that he's rubbish?

The patter that Musonda was signed for next year to allow this “untested “ figure to bed in for 6 months is absolute pish, clearly dreamt up to excuse Rodgers from the usual suspects.
It was practically a bukake party on here the day he signed. It was all blockbuster statements, even the club PR people and Rodgers himself got in on it.
The club employs PR people to hype up these things. It's literally their job. Musonda clearly has a lot of raw potential but maybe he's a bit off being ready to start consistently. It's taken Ntcham most of the season to be trusted to start every game, for example. Sometimes we have to be patient.
Yes but Ntcham was starting in CL qualifiers and demonstrating both ability and potential to improve. THats the point Ive been making from Sunday..he got the chance to show us what he can do...Musona & Compper have not. Baffling considering he signed them.

Even more baffling when you consider the money in the Musonda deal I'm really not sure about this. It would baffle someone no matter who is left out, with Rogic, a top player for us, coming back a good bit earlier than was expected and in the midst of contract discussion I'm not too surprised he's been the man. Think Tam was expected back in training in March but that ended up late January.

Heard a story about his behaviour in Dubai. Not repeatable. Dismissed it as nonsense but I wonder. Brendan certainly has his ruthless side, if he thinks a person isn't equipped to be Celtic standard.
Never giving Kris Commons a minutes game, after his disrespect to the Club & staff. Brendan apparently told Ronny that Kris would never play for him, turned out to be true.
Anything disrespectful seems to be met by Brendan's cold shoulder.

Ah yes, those two matches against Ross County and Dundee at home where we are certain to have about 75% of the ball and virtually all of the territory. Of course he wanted a centre half in this position and not a naturally attacking player.
Have you got anything to say about the above quotes or are you just going to ignore he ever said them?

The way it seems to me someone like Rodgers works unlike, say, Martin O'Neill for example, is not to play centre halves in attacking full back positions for games against 10th or 12th place teams like Dundee or Ross County at home. Especially someone who is likely to have even less knowledge of how we build attacks on the flanks in game situations, when we are likely to be pummelling those areas.
He might do it for very different reasons for games like Sevco at Ibrox, as per Ajer, especially when his first choice right back is suspended.
Compper might end up another Gamboa. I think people fear this is where it is going and are using that as a lead indicator.
I just think it is a bit premature to be doing so though, because of everything that tends to apply to this period of the season, and Compper's lack of availability until March.

No one has mentioned Gamboa. Bar you.

We sign a 34 year old central defender who can't even make the bench when at times the centre of defence has been all over the place. The others you mention at least made the bench when they weren't injured (Du Wei excepted) . I also don't think their terms would be as generous as Compper's. I think those looking at Compper's signinghave a right to question what on earth is going on.
Why do you keep adding years to a player's actual age? Come August the guy will be 40. Compper is 32. He will be 33 in June. But he's currently 32, just like you are whatever age you are right now, and not what you will be on your next birthday. He was first available for Morton at home. That's the source of a lot people's irritation with him by the way, quite aside from anything else. The guy had the audacity to get injured when it was perceived we needed a centre half. The shame. Well, that, and the dullard Kris Commons-for-brains argument that it was pointless because he couldn't play against Zenit. The manager then decided not to play him in our biggest league game of the season, away at Ibrox. Not sure he would have been the only one doing that. Since then we have played four games, he's been on the bench once at Motherwell where the emphasis was on making subs to change the 11 v 10 situation in our favour. Since that Hun match our woefully abhorrent defence have conceded ONE goal. One. Someone will really need to explain the level of scrutiny to me over this, because this is basically the long and the short of the entire thing, over a sample of literally six games of football. It is effing mental. Who said he had the audacity to get injured. It happens with quite a few centre halves we sign going all the way back to Mick McCarthy & Paul Elliott ?
He was signed to steady the defence and surely the idea would be to give him game time between now and the end of the season, so he is ready for CL qualifiers. The fact that he is unable to make the bench and the defence has been far from secure - the clean sheets don't tell the full story of how the back 4 has played - suggests all is not well with this particular player.
Disagree if you wish.

You've managed to pick the one quote that doesn't mention Compper. No one has mentioned Gamboa. Bar you. What does that matter? If Compper ends up not playing a lot between now and say next December, his situation will be comparable to Gamboa's won't it?
Which is exactly what people are moaning about isn't it? The recruitment policy?

So in short, don't trust his words here, but take his words on Musonda rather more literally. I've seen how this works.
