Looks like no contract fot Roberts next season. Brendan Rodgers reveals when Celtic loan star Charly Musonda will make impact at HoopsThe Chelsea youngster hasn't hit the heights expected of him yet but Rodgers believes it will happen. Spoiler: click to toggle ByMichael Gannon Brendan Rodgers insists price tags and sentiment won’t get Marvin Commper into his team. And the Celtic boss also reckons it will be next season before fellow absentee Charly Musonda starts to sparkle. Compper has barely been sighted since arriving for £1 million from RB Leipzig. Signed as a 32-year-old to bring experience into the backline, the German has played just once, against Morton in the Scottish Cup. Compper has unable to break into the team due to the performances of Norwegian teenager Kristoffer Ajer and Rodgers insists he won’t just pitch him into the fray because he cost a seven-figure sum or wants him to feel at ease. He said: “It was difficult for Marvin because he was injured in Dubai during the winter break, which put him out for a while. “During that period young Kris has come into the team and been absolutely outstanding. So there have been others ahead of Marvin. “His qualities are pretty clear for us, his experience and his way of working with the younger guys in training. Of course he wants to play as well but these aren’t fitness games we’re playing. “I’m certainly not sentimental. We need to pick a team that gets the results. I’ll make a change if I don’t like the way we’re playing. “It’s always been irrespective of age for me. When I first came in Kris was a midfielder and I thought his best position would be centre-half. Maybe in Norway he could play midfield but he has big possibilities at centre half. “I knew he wasn’t going to get the games there for me at first, so we loaned him to Kilmarnock to get that positional experience. But it was more so he had to head the ball, because I knew he would be under pressure at Kilmarnock. “That’s important if he’s going to do well in the British game. “He did well there, came back to us and looked as if he’d developed as a man. Then it was just about timing and when to put him in. “He did well in some of the Champions League qualifiers but still needed more time to develop. Now he’s in the team with a better understanding of the position. “He has everything. His potential is huge. He’s 6ft 5, quick, can play football. He’s a very bright boy as well, he knows there’s still a lot of learning for him. He’s got this great hunger to get better, which I love in players, and he’s not even 20 yet. “Marvin is a good guy, I like him. Hopefully in his time here he gets a chance to show his qualities. But that’s only if other players aren’t playing so well.” Rodgers is clear that the defender is still having an influence at the club without playing. Similar to Kolo Toure without as much experience of the top level, the defender is passing on tips to kids such as Jack Hendry and Ajer. Rodgers added: “He’s a really good communicator. He has certain qualities which really help support others. “We have a lot of young players in our squad, especially in central defence, so to have that experience around them helps. From a coaching and management perspective it’s valuable having him around, even if he’s not playing.” Musonda has on been on the fringes after signing an 18-month loan deal from Chelsea . At 21 he is looking to enhance his development and Rodgers believes he is a sparkling asset. Musonda has only made one start and three sub appearances but Rodgers says the kid is satisfied to bide his time and bed into the scene before really looking to shine next term. He said: “It’s a different type of loan for Charly compared to when he went to Spain and had to succeed straight away. Here he has 18 months to settle in, find the way of working and realising the pressures of a big club. “But he’s enjoying every minute of it and he knows that over time here that he will get an opportunity to show it in training where he works well and then in the games. It’s just time, that’s all. “All players want to play but he’s no different to Patrick Roberts or some of the others. They have a respect for where they are and what the team is doing. They respect that you can only pick 11 players. “He’s absolutely fine. He’s here for the 18 months and by the end of that he knows he is going to be a better player. “He’ll make some appearances from when he arrived in January to the end of this season. Then I think next season will be a big one for him to make his mark.” Have you been impressed with Charly Musonda's start to life at Celtic? https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/brendan-rodgers-reveals-celtic-loan-12333201
Musonda started three games within his first few weeks at the club so it was clear he was bought to go straight into the team. He lost his place because he played poorly in those matches. The narrative that he’s settling in for a few months with a view to making a big impact next year just isn’t true. Rodgers, I feel, is covering for both him and Compper here. They’ve been major disappointments. Yep. Everything BR said around the signing of Musonda suggested he was being brought in to be a key part of our attacking play immediately. Someone has dropped the ball.

I agree. He's defo covering for commper in particular. Covering for him meaning what? As opposed to chucking him under a bus?
Or he could be telling the situation as it is.

Commper played well albeit v Morton. He clearly hasn't done enough to get into our first team.
Musonda, is a strange one. I expected him to come in an make a immediate impact. I can't see him playing a part v Sevco. He will most likely play all the dead rubbers once we win the title.

Even with jozo unavailable, he's getting kept out the squad/team by the likes of boyata and Hendry. He can cover left back supposedly and yet even when Tierney is unavailable he is nowehere to be seen.
I think it's more than just fitness or form with him.

I had heard after Celtic period in Dubai, Rodgers immediately requested another defender (Jack Hendry) as it was clear Commper wasn't up to the job. Might be something in it, maybe not however the information is usually reliable.

Musonda is 21 years old. I really don't see why the panic so soon, his not even been at the club for 6 months.
Players can get better with training. Yes he hasn't hit the ground running but there is still plenty of time.

"Hopefully in his time here he gets a chance to show his qualities. But that’s only if other players aren’t playing so well.”
The guy is here for two and a half years and we're talking about hopefully seeing him at some point during it? Have we just spent £1m for a coach?
The other defenders have hardly been in stellar form either.

we'd been sniffing around Hendry since the autumn at least. That would be worrying, prior to the summer he had two loan spells at Shrewsury and MK Dons from Wigan, if we were looking at him prior to a decent 6 months at Dundee our scouting team need there heads checked mate

Players can get better with training. Yes he hasn't hit the ground running but there is still plenty of time. His age would only be relevant if he was on a long-term contract. We only have him for 16 months and by the time next season starts, seven of those months will already be up. I’ve never heard of a loan signing who needs half a season to bed in.

Could be that we've kept a very loose eye on him as his career has progressed.
I think the first time it came out that BR liked him was after a decent display in the 1-0 win we had against Dundee at CP this season.

I don't doubt they hoped it wouldn't be the case and he was ready to go from the off but I am not too concerned just now as there is still time to get a full season from him.

Why would he request Jack Hendry? He doesn't look up to it either. Brendan seemed to take a shine to him after a game earlier this season. I'm not particularly keen either on him, surely we've got to do better .

Agreed. Thats why I suspect that something is not tickets boo with this signing. This is the thing. If this was last season when Boyata and Simunovic were playing well, no one would have batted an eyelid about a new centre back coming in and having to bide his time. But we’ve chopped the changed the back four every week for the past six weeks due to injuries, suspensions and loss of form. We reached the point where even Callum McGregor had to play left back for three games. And still Compper’s nowhere to be seen.
