Most pleasing thing for me last night was seeing us change the style of play from bombing forward to a bit more contained and thoughtful in the numbers we got forward.

Really well played from Rodgers.
What pleased me more was the passing, most passes were locked onto the target, even from players like Lustig who don't always impress me with the accuracy when under pressure.

If we played like that each week we'd destroy teams in the league.

Where did I mention measuring European progress? :ponder:

The manager selects the team tonight, and sets them up for the game. He should be judged on that. His job is to make the most of available resources.

Of course expectations will vary dependent on a million factors, and those factors should be taken into account, but it’s still possible to comment on the manager’s performance fairly.
Sorry, previous posters stated that this would determine where we were in terms of European progress.

McGregor is starting - allegedly- so we can agree the manager has fecked it already :ph43r:
Indeed.

It's very easy to forget what a youthful side he put out last night. Leaving aside the goalkeeper the average age of the outfield players was under 24. The old men of Lustig and Brown skew the figures markedly. Without them the rest of the team has an average age of under 22. It's not inconceivable that Hendry (22) might replace Lustig.

What a performance from in essence a bunch of kids.
Mentioned it last night.

Simunovic 23
Ajer 19
Tierney 20
Kouassi 20
Ntcham 22
McGregor 24
Dembele 21
Musonda 21
Edouard 20

A good sprinkling of experience with De Vries, Lustig, Brown and Forrest.
And Forrest is only 26.

BBC Scotland last night said Callum McGregor was "hitting his peak now that he's 26 or 27" ;)

It's hard enough for them to be complimentary about us, you can't expect them to be factually correct as well

Aye.

DR article saying with 92% pass completion rate, we were the top passers in last night's fixtures.

A very important win psychologically. Firstly, we won at home again. Secondly, punched above our weight. Thirdly, we can play a European style of football and beat big names.

Top notch.

I think my favourite thing tactically tonight was the closing down of the keeper. Brendan knew he wanted to play the ball short so bringing Kouassi forward every time their keeper had the ball was a masterstroke

I've got to put this somewhere so it might as well be here.

The one criticism I have of last night, and Celtic in general over the last... well, 15 years or so actually, is that we're effing awful at set pieces. Sure we've been occasionally good at direct free kicks on goal (actually effing great at them in the Naka days), but whenever there's a corner or a free kick to be floated into the box we look about as threatening as a wet rag. I'm sure we must do some training on them, but whatever we're doing obviously isn't working and needs to be looked at.

We have occasional successes like Mulgrew's corner to Wanyama against Barca but the point is a good one in that when you consider the height we have offensively going into the penalty box (Lustig/Simunovic/Ajer/Boyata/ (who has nicked a few but not enough)/Edouard/Dembele to name some) we are really poor.

We were superb under MON. Hugely down to Thompson. Ramon Vega could hardly believe his debut.....

I’m sure Lustig played a cracking pass into the midfield with his left foot.

I’m not sure if he meant it as he had a right good swing at it - but after last nights performance, I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Moravcik was great too, and even Petta and guppy were decent at times for crosses from set play. Petrovs were different I wasn't a huge fan of his corners but got a few big goals from them.

Perhaps we could have had a result against Bayern playing this team? It was the right mix of defence and attack and if we'd only been sharper in front of goal we could have taken a 3 or 4 goal lead to Russia. Subs made at just the right time, too. Immense credit to BR.

Maybe, that game was very close, almost a 50/50 split in posespionage and we had more shots than Bayern. I think even a CB instead of Bitton and Bayern wouldn't have got that second goal.

RE the set pieces, apart from a cracking spell from Griffiths last season they've been really, really bad for ages. I think it's time to start taking short corners. Those floated balls into the box are poor.
