Most pleasing thing for me last night was seeing us change the style of play from bombing forward to a bit more contained and thoughtful in the numbers we got forward.

Really well played from Rodgers.

Delivered the performance that we all wanted, so much so that I never really felt threatened by Zenit all night.

Hopefully now he feels pragmatic doesn't necessarily = dull and we will see more sensible set-ups when required in Europe.

I hope so, a lesson learned perhaps and all the better for us.

I kept thinking we were going to lose a stupid goal or have the misfortune of a stupid deflection or bounce, but we were very composed all night - even the goal line clearance felt like a half chance rather than us being carved open.

It's a massive bonus that the second leg is only a week away, hopefully Zenit are still feeling tired from the first leg and their break and we can finish the game off. It looks like they don't have another game until they play us, so match sharpness could still be a big factor for them; we've been there ourselves in CL qualifiers...

Hopefully found a shape & most of the personnel to compete in Europe, our passing, making space & closing down were all very good.
Flooding the midfield with 6 players who were all prepared to put in a shift really worked, I think Sinclair would struggle to get back in & Brendan showed his class by not playing him.

What's really good about last night is that we can mix it up on a whim now and perhaps be less predictable in the league. We can head into domestic games against the higher placed sides - Aberdeen, Hibs and Sevco - and keep them guessing as to whether we'll go for the direct attacking route (Sinclair etc) or go for this more compact formation.

Big decision to shake it up last night and protect the back four a bit more by getting the keeper to play it long. Made a massive difference that Dembele was available played so well in the circumstance. It augurs well if we can change the style to suit the personnel rather than sticking rigidly to one style regardless of who's available.

Agreed.

Last night should be a reminder to the players what they're capable of. I don't know what's gone on for most of the season, but that should be the marker now.

even against domestic opposition we should be knocking it over the press at times. it caught out good players and a good team last night, the SPFL dross would quickly retreat back into their shell which suits us even more.

It's very easy to forget what a youthful side he put out last night. Leaving aside the goalkeeper the average age of the outfield players was under 24. The old men of Lustig and Brown skew the figures markedly. Without them the rest of the team has an average age of under 22. It's not inconceivable that Hendry (22) might replace Lustig.

What a performance from in essence a bunch of kids.

TV guy on Brendan running down the track to the ballbhoys at the goal and Brendan says "I am firstly a Celtic Supporter who happens to be privileged to be the Manager here" - "I think that was the Supporter in me coming out"
I think he was flummoxed at the stupidity of the question.

Mentioned it last night.

Simunovic 23
Ajer 19
Tierney 20
Kouassi 20
Ntcham 22
McGregor 24
Dembele 21
Musonda 21
Edouard 20

A good sprinkling of experience with De Vries, Lustig, Brown and Forrest.

First time I've ever really seen him react like that, he's usually pretty measured in his celebrations. He lost it for a bit there tonight.
To be fair, what a goal. Half expected Mancini to cheer.

Mancini was losing the plot last night. There's issues there. With his relationship with the team.

Not sure Zenit are a "top gig" in terms of European football; he probably wouldn't be considered for the absolutely massive jobs anymore. That said, he has won five cups and four league titles. He's not honking.

Was mancini not linked with Italy job after they got put out? Probably wants sacked so he can get a pay off. His pre game interview on bt was strange.
