Judge him when he's got his team available

We've got so many injuries at the moment, that tonight, won't reflect, where we really are at this point.
This is his team. A manager doesn’t get a free pass until every player in the squad is one he’s signed, because that rarely happens. That’s not why you pay for a decent manager.
We're missing the nucleas of our side.

If you all want to use tonight as reference to where we are in terms of European progress then crack on.

The rest of us will wait until we have most of our key players back.

Where did I mention measuring European progress? :ponder:

The manager selects the team tonight, and sets them up for the game. He should be judged on that. His job is to make the most of available resources.

Of course expectations will vary dependent on a million factors, and those factors should be taken into account, but it’s still possible to comment on the manager’s performance fairly.

Sorry, previous posters stated that this would determine where we were in terms of European progress.

McGregor is starting - allegedly- so we can agree the manager has fecked it already :ph43r:

If Gordon Strachan can get us to the last 16 twice on the trot with a team filled with Hartley, McManus, Caldwell, Telfer, Naylor, Sno, McDonald etc then it shouldn't be beyond us to get past Zenit. At the very least we ought to be competitive.

He played two banks of 4 though, and made us hard to beat.

Forrest, Brown and Tierney are the only players performing at a level where they are guaranteed starters. Everyone else can be the wrong/right pick depending on what happens in the game.

Gordon
Boyata
Lustig
Ralston
Roberts
Armstrong
Griffiths
Hayes
Rogic - hasn't played for two months
Compper

teams can cope with injuries - we're decimated

De Vries
Gamboa (assuming Lustig and Ralston are both out)
Ajer
Jozo
Tierney
Brown
Ntcham
Kouassi
Forrest
Sinclair
Dembele

We could field this team tonight and still find room on the bench for Rogic, McGregor, Hendry and Edouard. Not perfect but hardly a crisis. Most of the guys on the injured list are either fringe players or, in the case of Gordon, Lustig, Boyata and Armstrong, players large numbers of fans have called for to be replaced anyway.

Let’s make sure there is something to play for next week.

Then we can see if BR is learning.

Two legged tie completely different from CL group stages.

Now up against decent Euro team not the lesser teams from CL qualifying.

Would love any lead to nil.

Mate there's a difference between that, than simply asking the manager to deliver a competitive performance at home against a so called non elite club who have played a proper game for 3 months. That's why hes being paid the big bucks.

Most people aren't even demanding a win FFS

Which is what Brendan Rodgers should be doing in Europe if the way we are playing isn't being successful. Surely any good, modern coach should have more than one string to his bow? I get he has a certain why he likes to play but when you don't have the players and the quality to go toe to toe with these superior teams then surely you have to cut your cloth.

Interestingly Brendan has softened his position on this a bit. He started by saying he can't be pragmatic, then has since shown he can.

Plus he had Boruc, who like Forster gives the rest of the team a lot more confidence in playing their own game.

I like Gordon, he’s been good for us. But he doesn’t give you that feeling that the opposition need to be at their best to beat him.

And I also think that it’s frequently been injuries or other issues to the defence that see us collapse in these big European games.

Heid and McManus may not have been world beaters but they were strong characters and were rarely injured.

You're preaching to the converted.

To be fair, he altered the formation to a back 5 v Bayern, and it almost worked.

Tonight, I think we need to have a go. We need to take a lead over there to have a chance and our defence is very unlikely to keep a clean sheet.

Was it a back 5 against Bayern? Forrest played a very advanced role throughout, he pinned their wingback right back.
