big night for BR tonight. We have to be seen to be able to compete at this level.
Big ask, given the injuries. Not sure it'll be fair to judge him on this one. Unless we win it, of course.

Agree. For all the talk of Zenit having more money than us, the reason we brought in Brendan was to find a solution to that. The showing in Europe this season was pretty dismal with some frankly awful performances along the way.

All you want tonight is a performance of a level that matches or comes close to Zenit. Setting up correctly, making sure the team are organised and know their roles, getting his team selection correct.
realism in action, not just words.

Excuses in already?

When can we judge him? His job is to make us competitive at this level.

I could probably live with a close defeat at this stage if its the result of a 90 minute end to end slobberknocker where both teams were excellent, but another humping or dismal bottling performance is unacceptable.

Judge him when he's got his team available

We've got so many injuries at the moment, that tonight, won't reflect, where we really are at this point.

Correct. Another heavy defeat will have folk asking serious questions. I have a feeling we’ll give them a real game over the two legs.

These things happen. When we beat Anderlecht, they were in limbo with a caretaker manager. When we played well against Bayern, they were missing several key players. The praise Rodgers received for those displays wasn’t tempered by the fact our opponents had major problems at the time. And nor should it have been because that’s football - you take your opponents as you find them. The same applies in reverse. Injuries happen every season and it’s part of the manager’s job to find solutions to whatever situations he’s faced with.

That's fine and well, but it's not a gauge of where we are at the moment, as some have suggested.

We have to compete over both legs. If we can do that and demonstrate some progress then I think we will all be relatively happy. If we take a hiding then there may be trouble ahead. Especially if it's down to a reluctance to have a more defensive aspect to our approach.

Rodgers' pre-match media comments are extremely weak. I get we're underdogs but this isn't a game about developing or improving.

This is a game that we should be treating positively and aggressively. A big chance to take a good scalp. I hope his words to the team are less passive. I'll be raging if we put up a soft performance tonight.

I hope he's just trying to take the pressure off.

But when do we gauge where we are? What if our players were all fit but half of Zenit’s first team were missing? Off the top of my head, I reckon we can field a team tonight with at least seven internationals plus the likes of Dembele, Ntcham and Sinclair. We’re hardly at the bare bones stage.

Ntcham
Kouassi
Forrest
Sinclair
Dembele

We could field this team tonight and still find room on the bench for Rogic, McGregor, Hendry and Edouard. Not perfect but hardly a crisis. Most of the guys on the injured list are either fringe players or, in the case of Gordon, Lustig, Boyata and Armstrong, players large numbers of fans have called for to be replaced anyway.

Sorry mate but I have to disagree, we keep hearing a new excuse why we should just give him a bye for us getting pumped.

We have injuries yes but they haven't played a competitive match for 3 months and this is also a home tie for us.

We also kept hearing from the man himself that the Europa League was where we wanted to be.

Well here we are so its time to deliver.

Nonsense

Gordon, Boyata, Lustig, Roberts, Rogic, Armstrong and Griffiths are all massive losses from that list.

It's practically a full team, just cause we've got half decent squad depth doesn't mean that these players aren't a massive loss, if all fit probably 6 of them play, with Griffiths being unlucky to lose out.

I'm all for Celtic making a game of this but pretending we're not baw-deep in an injury crisis isn't helpful at all.

This is his team. A manager doesn’t get a free pass until every player in the squad is one he’s signed, because that rarely happens. That’s not why you pay for a decent manager.

Don't forget Musonda. We do have enough depth to field a competitive team, but there is no doubt our central defence is a worry. It will all come down to BR's selection/formation, and then how the individuals perform. No need not to be optimistic.

I agree

It does seem some want to get the excuses in early - yes we have injuries to some key players - happens a lot at this level but BR should be able to put out a team to perform at their highest level in front of over 50k of us

If we can see where an extra bit of quality from Roberts Rogic or LG would have helped - we will all say it - but I’m expecting us to turn up tonight - this what I hope BR does best
