When he signed comper he could see we needed a steady cb, it was very unfortunate that he got injured at the training camp. That has changed the dynamics at the back and I don't think simunovic would be starting if commper was available. Ajer is a good player, jack hendry looks like a poor mans john stones and I can see what Brendan is trying to do to upgrade the back line. Lustig falls over like he's been shot and isn't as dynamic as I'd like at rb. Goalkeeping situation is out of his hands (pardon the pun) after Gordon's injury. Compper will be an upgrade when fit. (Notice I spelled Compper differently three times to ensure I got it right once).

Need to starting hunting the ball back instantly after losing the ball. We done it last year and we were so dangerous . This season there isn’t a hunger to win it quickly . That’s the problem. It’s the same players so we know they are capable of it . Manager needs to bring that back out in them
Yep and it's really great to watch when they do it well, hunting it down in packs. The counter-press or 3 second rule popularised by Guardiola and Klopp (amongst others).

The reaction to losing the ball has been quite slow this season. The team is often quite stretched from defence to middle to the attacking players rather than a unit pushing up and closing down. That and there's a lack of width in possession.

There's a book 'Pressing' by a coach called Massimo Lucchesi and it's worth a read if you're into this kind of thing. It has a section on what he calls the 'psycho-physical' condition of players regarding a high-pressing style - a mixture of the physical fitness to chase the ball down but also a mental aspect to be prepared to. They could be physically fit enough but not feel the same mentally. There's also the feeling of risk attached to it - e.g. from leaving spaces in behind them - which players must be comfortable with, so a team not firing on all cylinders or fully confident may not be as up to it.

EDIT: good piece here on the same stuff - https://coachdibernardo.com/2016/07/14/counter-pressing-or-gegenpressing-key-concepts/

Is Brendan maybe bored?

Hes realized he doesn't have to be full on 100% to win games, no need to study opposition that much and knows whatever he does he will be loved by the fans. Improvement in Europe is still going to hit the PSG/Barcelona wall no matter how we improve, though a properly organized defence would help if hes into that.

All thats naturally going to lose you your edge and motivation even if just slightly.
Could maybe say that about the players as well. They pretty much know they are going to skoosh Scotland, let their own standards slip and can’t actually lift them when they have to in Europe.

We should be out winning four or five nil every week and then the players can carry that confidence onwards.

This season is just Brendan's "difficult second album".

We have Sgt Pepper, The White Album, Revolver, Rubber Soul all to come.

MON was the same. Started really well and we were unlucky not to make the last sixteen in the CL then a resurgent Rangers beat us in the semi final of the league cup and the scottish cup final.

All felt a bit flat after winning the domestic treble just a year before. Bizarrely, the following season was fantastic and somehow deeply disappointing at the same time.

He looks a totally different character from last year.

I wouldn't be surprised if he left at the end of the season.

If, as expected, we lose to ZSP I don't really see him hanging around much longer than that.
they are out in force today hey   unbelievable

Big summer coming up for him. He must make major changes to the first 11
Could be a big re-building job. Something I hate, giving the CL qualifiers are vital for us.

Few players deals running into the last year, so they are most likely going to be off but the dip in form in quite a few others, hasn't helped and has probably made it a bigger job than first thought.

That’s just prolonging the agony. If he’s half the man he was last year he would fall on his sword, or a breadknife if he doesn’t have a sword. It’s the only way he can salvage an ounce of self respect, and hell mend him.

What's interesting is that when Sevco eliminated us on pens under Deila, it was almost universally agreed that we needed a total rebuilding job, minimum 7 new signings required etc. Yet it could transpire that we may end up winning consecutive trebles, having also secured consecutive UCL qualifications, but the proper rebuild actually occurs this summer in preparation for Brendan's 3rd season in charge.

It's testament to Rodgers' incredible man management and coaching abilities that we transformed as a team, despite only 2 players (Sinclair & Dembele) really being added to a nucleus that declined so badly under the previous manager.

But reviewing our squad, there are only 12 players I reckon will definitely be at Celtic in September 2018: Ajer, Hendry, Compper, Tierney, Forrest, Brown, Ntcham, McGregor, Musonda, Sinclair, Griffiths & the soon-to-arrive Lewis Morgan. Added to them being youngsters who aren't loaned out i.e. Ralston.

Dembele, Armstrong & Simunovic will almost certainly leave. Fringe players like Gamboa, DDV & Bitton are likely to leave. Kouassi & Hayes may be in the former category, albeit loaned out in late August. Roberts, Edouard and Bain almost certainly won't be signed permanently. Boyata & Rogic aren't 100% certs to stay.

Whether Gordon stays or not (likely to stay IMO), we need to strengthen the GK position. Similarly whether Lustig stays or not (again likely to stay) we need to bolster the RB area. Tierney needs credible competition, Brown remains pivotal but isn't getting any younger, we'll need a striker or two whilst hoping Griffiths sorts out his recent injury problems.

Out of 5 first team loanees out (Sviatchenko, Christie, Allan, Benyu & Ciftci), only Christie has a chance of a future at the club.

Here's hoping Brendan is emphatically backed by the board in the summer, as he has earned it tenfold & the squad very much requires it.
Great post TrevBhoy and while I don't have a mystic meg ball I see all of that happening. It takes more than 4 windows to get your team together and I'm sure Brendan is in for the long run.

We spend too much time floofing about at the back. We were much quicker at recycling it last season.

Whether that's down to Armstrong and rogic being injured and not cutting it this season when they have been fit or something else only he knows. But he needs to fix it.
We're not playing near as much in that 25-30 yd area outside the opposition box area as we did last season.

In the short term, When teams are coming on and pressing us how about just sometimes going long and turning them round, at least put some doubts into the opposition because at the moment it's obvious what we're going to do.

And no I'm not taking about playing hoof ball, just a bit of variety and don't let very limited players like at killie and thistle get 'set'.

While I tend to agree with you I don't think he's going to be here for years and years to come. He probably feels he still has unfinished business in England.

Too many big players simply not doing it for him. Sinclair was piss poor again yesterday and as for Dembele - we'll be lucky to get any kind of decent fee with the downward trajectory he appears to be on.

It's turning into madhouse in here. Think of what we've achieved and are in a position to achieve this year.

We have major players coming back this week from injury and we'll be seeing Compper coming in to help steady at the back. A good performance against Zenit will cheer everyone up. Hopefully.

I agree with what someone posted earlier, that perhaps certain players too their foot off the gas with an eye on Thursdays game, it happens.
