"If I was working in Spain my core would always be Spanish. In Scotland my core will always be Scottish. That’s important because they understand and live and breath it."

Fine but are there going to be enough good Scottish players to form this core he refers to.

I think with his love of coaching he's planning to develop as many good Scottish players as he can. Certainly a challenge for him.

Very selective quote. In the very next line it says:

"But what is also important is that if you are working in the Champions League you also need to be able to branch out and bring in the best of other nationalities. It’s two fold."

I'm 100% happy with what BR's quoted as saying in that article.

I dispute it's selective. "My core will always be Scottish". Core being the operative word, the central part.

He had guys like Gerrard and Carragher at Liverpool, and Ashley Williams and Joe Allen at Swansea, plus no doubt a few others that I've forgotten about at both clubs.

I think he's right anyway, especially at a club like Celtic where we'll always struggle to hold onto our best players for more than 2 or 3 years it's important to have a stable core of guys who actually want to play in Scotland. There are exceptions of course, but it's always going to be the case that Scottish players are more likely to want to play in Scotland than players of any other nationality.

Hmmm. Agree with a lot of your posts, but think you're being a bit picky this time.

Ok, sorry if that's how it appears but if we are hoping to make progress I don't see many Scottish players in the team, at least not at the moment.

He had Henderson, Sterling, Sturridge, Gerrard and Glen Johnson at Liverpool.

Swansea wasn't so much a Welsh core, but a British one. Allen and Williams were the only Welsh players, but he did have plenty English players in his team like Sinclair, Dyer, Graham, Routledge and Britton.

Our Scottish core in 2000-04, the best Celtic team since the Lisbon Lions, wasn't too strong.

Clubs shouldn't set limits, in any direction, on nationalities when it comes to footballing progress.

Hendry could be a goer going by his comments, which I’m happy with if he’s not the only centre back still to come in this window. We need a big signing at the back.

But they do need a core of decent home grown/trained players to fit the UEFA quota, other wise your CL/Europa league squad is reduced. Just saying :ph43r:

On your 2000-2004 team point, it was a core of British players that made up the team and if you look at a fair number of the successful teams around Europe, they usually have a core of home grown players in their teams.

I’d rather take some notes from the 2007 team at the moment. In 2003 we genuinely were a top team, in 2007 we overachieved in Europe which is all we can aim for these days.
