One thing that worked against Ronny was his relative obscurity in comparison to his predecessors, I think we'll see a different caliber of player wanting to come and work with Brendan.

Very chuffed with this. Exactly the sort of appointment we wanted. Moyes was my first pick but Rodgers was probably the next best option. I just want a team on the park that shows a bit of mettle.

We need to go out and back him in the transfer market now. The whole purpose of this appointment is to flex a bit of muscle so let's follow it through.

Time to move up a gear, Celtic.

There were quite a few reservations.

Many remembered him as a pundit in France 98 and he talked absolute drivel for much of it. Additionally, his Leicester team weren't renowned for playing particularly good football. He also cut a bit of an eccentric madcap figure on the touchline. And, some liked the idea of Hiddink.

He was though instantly impressive from his the 1st minute of his press conference onwards. And by 2pm on August 27 three was no doubt we were in a revolution.
Not quite how I remember it. He was well received, came across thoughtful in Euro 2000 and it was only after 6-2 that we knew something special was happening.
Add Sutton arriving, eyebrows were raised, but what a signing.

He has some job on his hands weeding out the cowards and shampooebags that didn't play under Ronny and moulding a team out of the rest.

I genuinely think there is the guts of a decent team in there if he is able to sort out the good from the bad from the awful.

Exciting times :rocker:
I think for the money we are supposed to be paying him we would what him to turn those you refer to as coward's and shampoo bags into good reliable & consistent players for Celtic. That's what good managers do.
 I am confident he will do his own thing and not go with the "experts" on kds or elsewhere.

Delighted with the appointment (even though I wanted Moyes as my first pick). That said, are we not getting a wee bit carried away with a carnival on the Celtic Way and comparing this to the MON days?

When Brendan has pumped Barca, Liverpool, Juve, Lyon, Blackburn and taken us all the way to a Euro final maybe then we can compare him to the blessed one.
Bah humbug eh .

There is a quote from one of the commentators (can't remember who) just after Sutton sticks away his second and our sixth in the 6-2 game.

"Martin O'Neil said all he lacked was confidence, well he certainly won't lack it now. He's a hero in the East End of Glasgow today."

On a recent re-watch of the season review from 00/01 this quote had me scoffing purely because knowing what we all know now about Sutton's exploits for us, it is hard to imagine him as someone lacking confidence. At the time though MON will have had that right. Sutton had just come off the back of a bad season at Chelsea.

Shows how much confidence can be worth.

Confidence definitely wasn't the issue for Sutton at Chelsea. He was of the opinion that they weren't playing to his strengths and made sure everyone around knew it. I think he actually had to be dragged away from Gianluca Vialli on a flight back from a European defeat because he was being made to look bad as a result of the managers tactics.

Amazing how quickly things change in football. We've went from nobody wanting the job in 2014 to debating over Davie Moyes and Brendan Rodgers in 2016. I thought Moyes would be good too, simply because I wanted a proper defence as we've been pumped daft in Europe for the last few years and especially weak at the back. But if we could pick a manager that fits with the mythical Celtic way of playing, Brendan Rodgers is probably the closest we're ever likely to get. Celtic minded, Irish, sought after, experienced at the highest level and his teams were acclaimed for playing attacking football and scoring lots of goals. He's perfect for how we conceptualise ourselves.

What changed since 2014? Scottish football isnt any better. So it looks like the entry of Sevco into the league has prompted the board to loosen the purse strings for wages and transfers. And the manager knows there is likely to be an increased level of competition. Added to the CL qualification route. As Brendan pointed out, we have a good infrastructure and are financially healthy. The last few years have been awful. For the first time I switched off. But its amazing how a new manager can reinvigorate a club immediately. A few good signings in key areas and we're back in business. Hump Newco in the first game, qualify for the CL and a full Celtic Park will be rocking again (with 10,000 fairweather supporting fuds).

Whoever on this board said a manager doesnt really matter is going to look pretty daft if Rodgers hits the ground running.
