80% Ronnies team tonight.

Back him or lose him
You don't get to use that to praise him and then use it to excuse him.
Unfair.

Was a simple observation. Excuse him for what? I was hoping for a win tonight to round off a decent performance in the hardest CL group, so was everyone else.

It is a RD team that's been supplemented by excellent young prospects, and I'm a hunner percent behind it. But where's the money thats been spent on real, established impact players since BR arrived? Toure and Sinclair?

Yeah, idiots we are for not reaching the last 16.

To go 5 at the back with Tierney as a wing back to stem the flow from Anderlecht.

If you come out after a 5-0 home defeat and a 7-1 ranking away and say you aren't going to change your style and then you aren't brave enough to believe sticking to your own style will see see you avoid a 3-0 home defeat by Anderlecht, it makes you look rather foolish.

We went 'toe to toe' with Man City and Bayern yet gave this mob the run of the match.

For all of the bad luck we got with the top two seeds, Anderlecht were a pretty poor team in the context of Pot 3. If we're not able el even muster a decent performance against them at home, that's worrying.

Rodgers has certainly improved on a team that finished bottom of a Europa League group but there's only so far you can go getting incremental improvements with the same guys.

BRs biggest signing is Ntcham. He was signed specifically because he would be ideal for European football. He played excellently well on Saturday, yet was left on the bench tonight. The manager deserves criticism for that alone.

Having a team not try to win a game for the last half hour is wholly unacceptable.

Needs to dump the dross from midfield and either start playing ntcham and kouassi more regularly and buy a number 10 in January or he is always going struggle in europe.

From the players that started last night we need for europe;

A goalkeeper
At least 1 centre half.
A right back
2 centre mids
A number 10.

Lustig and Brown aren't getting younger. Of those that have played in behind the striker this year neither Rogic, McGregor or armstrong are good enough.

Ntcham and kouassi may be able to fill the 2 centre midfield roles.

Because we switched to 5-4-1 with a midfield diamond half way through first half.

What would you call Stuart Armstrong? Dross is maybe to strong for some but overall the midfield isn't great let's be honest.

I wouldn't call him dross. I wouldn't describe anyone in our team that way.

He was very poor last night and the decision to replace him at half time was absolutely right.

His form has been up and down this season. He's a very good midfielder. He might not make a CL midfielder but many don't. That said there were moments against Munich when he looked very good.

He has us regularly playing as 100% Of the sum of our parts more often than not, but hasn't got us playing as more than the some of our parts (outside man city and home and possibly bayern at home).

Going to post up a few quotes from Brendan over the course of the Champions League. I'm not doing so to criticise him but to merely try and work out what our longer term strategy will be.

I'll admit that for this campaign I wasn't heavily critical of our defeats to PSG and Bayern. I had 100% bought into Brendan telling us that we needed to try a different approach and that we were going to build a culture that would see us compete with the best. The 2-1 defeat at home to Bayern gave me great hope that it might be possible to play the big teams at their own game and at least at home go toe-to-toe with them.

However the flip side is that at home previous Celtic managers have been able to go toe-to-toe with teams of similar quality to PSG and Bayern. Under MON, Strachan and Lenny we had lost just 3 home games in the Champions League group stages. And let's not say the gap is bigger now. We beat some right good teams over the years. Juve, Lyon (a cracking team then), Man U (semi-finalists that year), Drawing with AC Milan in last 16 (eventual winners), beating Milan the following season,

That's not including teams like Porto, Benfica, Shakhtar who were all better than the Anderlecht team we faced this season.

Brendan has now lost 5 games in 2 seasons.

Like I said I bought into the message that we were building a certain style. But last night flew totally in the face of what Brendan has been saying. Our approach last night contradicts what has been said before. I was in Paris recently when we lost 7-1 and I wasn't too angry - perhaps I should have been. In contrast I cannot accept our approach last night.

Anyway a few Brendan quotes that are contradictory.

"We were fourth seeds and there won’t be too many of those who have jumped up to third place and gone through. We have been able to do that."

CSKA Moscow (9 points) have and were unlucky not to be 2nd), Sporting (7 points) have, RB Leipzig (7 points with 1 to play) have and may get 2nd. That's 50% of the teams.

Brendan after Celtic 0 PSG 5

"But what we do have to do is always be competitive and we weren't for that first half

"The thing I said to the players is, 'you have to have the belief' and, maybe a bit similar to last year, it might take us a game or two to get into the competition,"

Brendan after Anderlecht 0 Celtic 3

"We can be better. I believe we can be better than we were tonight.

"At this level, it's all about the belief. You're playing against top-class players, fantastic clubs - a club like Anderlecht with a huge history and the Belgian champions.

"For our guys to show what they've done in the last 12 months and improve is great credit to them. They'll gain belief, they'll gain confidence, but they'll also know that we want to continually improve."

Brendan after Bayern 4 Celtic 0

I’d rather lose playing how we want to play and how we want to work, as opposed to sit in and defending for 90 minutes and still lose if that’s the case,”

Rodgers after Celtic 1 PSG 7

People have asked if I would have done anything different against PSG, but we were playing a back five, four midfielders and one up front.

"What do they want us to play? Seven at the back, two midfield players and one up front? Or do they want me to be camped in around the box and lose 4-0?

“No chance. It won’t happen.

It’s my job as the leader of the team, when we have lost in the Champions League before, to shape the mentality of the players.

Brendan in general before CL game.

But I’ve always been about playing without fear and ensuring they know they’re in a game. They will do when the whistle goes. But I always want us to really test the opponent. See how they feel under pressure. When you’re breathing right up against them, and if you can touch them then you’re pressing them.

Pre-Anderlecht

'We want to give the supporters a Champions League victory at home.

'We have been in two campaigns now, this is obviously the last game.

'It has been absolutely brilliant. The supporters have been incredible for us home and away but it would be nice for us to finish with a victory at home and take us to six points which will show a real level of progress.'

Final quote which I'm leaving as a marker for the future.

“We now have a few months to put in a lot of work and there are always lessons to be learned at this level because of the players you are up against

Yeah, idiots we are for not reaching the last 16.
Rodgers has willingly opted to extend the contracts of Armstrong, McGregor, Brown, Simunovic, Rogic, Gordon, Forrest, Tierney and Lustig since May 2016.

He has talked in glowing terms about every one of these players at one point or other. He willingly brought Roberts back too. He clearly does not have a problem having the players in his squad, because he could have shipped any number of them out.

He has been undone by a laughable series of injuries this season so far since virtually the beginning of July, but the lack of progression in the squad since the first transfer window cannot go passed without comment.

He opted to sign Hayes. He presumably opted to sign Kouassi. His back up goalkeeper choice to push Gordon was 36 year old Dorus De Vries. Similarly Gamboa to push Lustig.

The guy who probably had the most solid turn of any of our players last night was signed this summer but left on the bench as we opted for a midfield three of Brown, Armstrong and McGregor.

Recruitment is a key concern and the floofing about in the summer over Coetzee - who would have similarly been totally inadequate given he broke down with injury about 3 games after the window closed - was pretty embarrassing and unnecessary.

It is time to get a grip.

He's taken the praise for the domestic form, so needs to take the criticism for the European form.

He is continually asking players to do things they cant do. Boyata and Jozo are not ball playing centre halves, Gordon continually gets criticised for his distribution, but he is following instructions. Armstrong just isnt good enough at this level, neither is McGregor. The decision to leave out Ntcham last night was completely baffling.

We've scored 1 goal in our last 5 home group games. Its not good enough, and its an insult to folk spending fortunes on top of season ticket money.

I still believe we can improve, 'the gap' is there to the super teams, but we should be able to take on and beat pot 3 teams and the odd pot 2 team at home. Ntcham needs to become first choice, we need to start integrating Kouassi into the team, adding Brown to that with 2 new centre halves would give us a strong spine and allow us to play the football we want to play. I love Tam, but thats the pragmatism we need in Europe, without compromising on the rest of the philosophy.
