BRENDAN RODGERS has admitted he wants a new centre-half in January — to bring Celtic stability in defence.

Hoops boss Rodgers has been rocked by the news Jozo Simunovic has been ruled out for three weeks.

Fellow central defenders Erik Sviatchenko and Dedryck Boyata have also been crocked, and Rodgers will act when the transfer window opens.

Rodgers said: “It’s definitely an area I need to look at now, centre-half is a position where you need stability.

“It’s been unfortunate for us we haven’t had that.

“It hasn’t just been one player who’s been affected, it’s been two and sometimes three at a time who have been out.

“It’s unfortunate, but we have to make do, and we’ll see what January brings.

“In the meantime we move on with the players we have, and we’ll always look to find a way.

“Jozo’s new injury is similar to what it was before, it’s a recurrence and he could be two or three weeks out.

“I would think he will miss the next game against Bayern Munich.

“It’s been difficult for Jozo, but he’s a tough boy and he will come again.”

Rodgers was on the verge of signing South African defender Rivaldo Coetzee in the summer before he failed a medical.

Rodgers then opted against bringing in deadline-day cover, but insists he never expected to be so short on bodies.

He added: “It was also about the availability of the right type because I don’t want to stockpile players and bring one in just for the sake of it.

“Unless you bring in someone who can make an immediate impact — and we tried — it’s something we just have to work around.

“Of course, if someone was to tell me all of my centre-halves would be unavailable for a certain amount of time then I would have had to consider signing someone.

“But I’m a developer of talent, and that’s one of my loves of being in Scotland.

“I love the notion I can groom young players and improve them, and then put them into the team.

“If you just keep buying players then you lose the opportunity to do that.

“You are always open to criticism as a manager if you don’t have a ready-made replacement like they do in the computer games — but unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that.

“I’m one who will give young players a chance. I’ll look from within and see what we have.

“What’s frustrating, of course, is the instability that can bring.

“That’s why you need to have a systematic approach where one goes out and another comes in and they know what they are doing.

“But you have to keep your door open for young players.”

What makes the 60 games even more remarkable is the European schedule plus the players away on international duty compared to other teams we are playing. Also the fact he never sets out for anything other than a victory is also incredible. You would have imagined someone would have been able to mug us during that period. An outstanding manager indeed.

If the daft twat thinks Celtic have topped out, where next for Leicester? FFS any manager with the slightest bit of nous about the game would avoid them. They're at absolute best a mid table team with a league cup win in them.
What Ranieri did is a free radical in terms of the EPL.

There might be sides BR would leave for. It won't be Leicester.

He is defending Pedro today for his reaction to the refereeing yesterday. Said Motherwell’s challenges were like something from the 1980s and he has a right go at Ryan Bowman mentioning his tackle on KT last season.

This.

As much as it's great to see the huns beat, there's nothing wrong with pointing out when things aren't quite right re: reffing and challenges.

must be quite a thing for their fans to get their head around though "Obsessed timmy...but he's saying the same things as us...about the team who beat us...obsessed..but right..but timmy"

They can hardly complain about the ref. Did you see the Alves incident? Morelos does enough to get sent off every game too.

Bowman is a thug though. Should be banned for a while for the safety of other players.

They should start a petition to get the compliance officer to ref their games.

He'd do them a turn.

on the european front i think it is simply lack of resources

gamboa at right back "protected" by roberts may be less risky if he could have coped but once he started being roasted i saw comments like BR should have taken gamboa off put lustig out there and brought on ajer or bitton at centre half

Given the way astana drifted off bitton i can see a flaw in that argument

that said i'd have had roberts off and either forrest on if he wanted to keep the same shape

or ntcham out of there and a reshaped midfield

any which way you look at it i think

jozo was a must lustig is still not the best we could get at RB however much he gets us

with dembele up front and a more solid defence midfield would have had a better chance

we would still have been beaten but it may have been more of the last 30 mins

all of it equates to the need to get the next window right and not leave us short of quality again for europa
