Rodgers ‘ticks every box’ for a top-four club – Redknapp
Date published: Tuesday 17th October 2017 10:52

Brendan Rodgers “ticks every box” for a top-four club in the Premier League, according to Jamie Redknapp.

Rodgers has recovered his reputation since being appointed Celtic manager in summer 2016.

The 44-year-old has never lost a Scottish Premiership game, going his first season as coach unbeaten, and overseeing seven wins and two draws at the start of this campaign.

Celtic also won the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup in Rodgers’ first season, and are currently third in their Champions League group, level on points with Bayern Munich.

Redknapp believes he has rebounded from his sacking at Liverpool in October 2015, and would again be considered for top jobs in England.

“Without a shadow of a doubt, he ticks every box,” he told the BBC when asked whether a top-four club would look to employ the Northern Irishman.

“If you are a player, and I played at the top level, I’d have loved to play for someone like Brendan Rodgers.

“He’s the type of guy that looks you in the eye, he’s very confident and he makes you believe in yourself. That’s what you want from any manager – and tactically he knows the game.

“At Liverpool, he was harshly done-by, but these things happen and, once you start to get a few bad results, the crowd maybe start to go against you.

“That’s football, but it doesn’t make Brendan Rodgers a bad manager. He’s turned it around and shown everybody how good he is.

“I don’t know what Brendan Rodgers thinks and he’s managing one of the best clubs in the world. I don’t necessarily think he’s going to be looking to go any time soon, but if an opportunity comes in a couple of years, maybe that might happen.

“At the moment, I’m sure he’s happy winning trophies at Celtic and now, with Rangers back in the big league as well, it makes it a lot more interesting when they are going head to head. At the moment, Celtic are, of course, the team to beat.

“If you’re Arsenal in a few years, once Arsene Wenger decides to retire, if he ever does, I’m sure he’ll be on their radar.

“I hope the Celtic fans don’t have a go at me for that, but he’s that good a manager.”

Of course he ticks every box. He's already finished in the top 4 down there. There's a chance he'd still be down there had Klopp's lawyer not went to Fenway and said this is your one chance to get my client.

Their loss our gain. He probably should of been stronger @ Liverpool when Suarez went. The club really let him down getting a replacement and he was basically forced to take Balotelli or nothing.

he's asked a question, he's answered it quite honestly, with no lack of praise for rodgers.

not sure what he's said wrong here if i'm honest.

I think he definitely does. Always seems to talk us up and raves about the Champions League nights.

Can't disagree with anything he's said there either.

His dad’s tax dealings support that theory.

I actually think Redknapps spoke quite well there, no doubt been asked a direct question re: rodgers/arsenal etc but the way he's answered is well put imo.

this seems pretty fair...

Brendan Rodgers has the capability to manage both Celtic and Scotland, according to Lisbon Lion Jim Craig.

Brendan Rodgers has the ‘capability’ to manage both Celtic and the Scottish national team, according to Celtic legend Jim Craig.

Craig, who was at Hampden at the weekend as the Lisbon Lions were inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame, believes Rodgers could emulate Jock Stein by managing the two teams at the same time.

Craig, 74, told the Evening Times: “Brendan certainly has the capability of managing Celtic and Scotland but whether he would want to do it is another matter.

“It’s an enormously big decision for the SFA who they appoint next because Euro 2020 games will be played at Hampden and it would be hellish if we weren’t there.

“It puts even more strain on the incumbent, whoever that may be. Of the names being put forward very few are in football at the present moment - at least Brendan is.

“He picks players who are on form which not every manager does. They pick players who think would be the best player for the job. If you have someone who is on song then why not pick him?

“The two form players in Scotland right now are Leigh Griffiths and Callum McGregor.

“Just think - if [Gordon Strachan] picked McGregor then things might have been different.

“[Jock Stein] combined both jobs in 1965 - it’s a different generation, although I think [Rodgers] could do it.”

I quite like old Harry. Can't say he's not talking sense in that interview, and he especially notes that Brendan might not want to leave "one of the best clubs in the world".

Edit: Sorry I thought it was Harry speaking.

I'm more pissed off with Jim Craig's "manage Scotland" pish than anything Jamie Rednapp has said. :brickwall:

Brendan will follow MON's footsteps and eventually manage Ireland! But not until he's completed 14-in-a-row, otherwise known as a Dave King TIAR.
