Interview with Phil Gordon in today's Times where he speaks of having only played the same 11 players once in 16 months...

Quote:

Brendan Rodgers will continue to shuffle the deck at Celtic

There is only one certainty at Celtic under Brendan Rodgers, and that is change. So, the manager will relish rather than worry about the decision of who to leave out at Dens Park tomorrow night.

Rodgers revealed yesterday that he has only once picked the same team in his 16 months in charge of the champions. That philosophy delivered a domestic treble last season and Rodgers is eager to embrace the Betfred Cup quarter-final with Dundee, with the same desire as facing Paris SaintGermain.

The Celtic manager made five changes to his side last Saturday ahead of a 4-0 Ladbrokes Premiership win over Ross County, as the Glasgow side bounced back from their Champions League thrashing by PSG.

“It’s not really [a problem],” said Rodgers. “I think there’s only one time where I’ve played the same 11 players.” That was last March, when the side which won 4-0 against Inverness Caledonian Thistle, defeated St Mirren 4-1 in the Scottish Cup four days later.

“If you check back over all the other games, I’ve changed the team,” said Rodgers. “There’s never been the same 11 that’s played. The players have been aware of that since the first day I came in. If you’re going to be playing 60-plus games a season for the intensity and demands of running that I ask of the team, the same team can’t do it.

“The players have bought into that, they know they get enough games. Of course, there comes periods where you have to pick teams for big games and big occasions but they also respect they are all big games here.”

The League Cup has a special place in Rodgers’ affections, since the trophy was the first piece of silverware he won at Celtic and, while he admitted he was able to omit key players from the English League Cup while at Liverpool because of higher priorities, that does not work in Scotland.

“You don’t get that luxury at Celtic,” he said. “There’s a big demand on you to win every game in every competition. The competition is good and I really like the final being in November. The Dundee game is great.

“Winning it last season was very important for us. For me, it will always be the most important trophy because it was the first one — and also because it was the one which gave the players the belief.”

The identity of the Dundee manager has changed since Rodgers went to Dens Park last season, with Paul Hartley being replaced by Neil McCann, whom Rodgers last met after Celtic won the league title in April, while McCann was still in his role as a Sky football analyst.

“I’m glad he has come out of that comfortable chair and put himself into situation where the light shines right on you,” joked Rodgers. “I think Neil has done really well. It is not easy. He speaks very well about the game.

“I have an admiration for him to come out of where he was, roll his sleeves up and get on to the training field. It hasn’t been an easy start for him. I think he always played the game with a great level of technique and speed as a player. He played with charisma. I am sure that is how he is trying to get his teams to play. It will be a tough game for us.”

McCann gave up a comfortable job with Sky, one which is far better-paid than the Dundee manager, and if the former Scotland player did not know the ruthless territory he has just joined, then that was underlined yesterday when Anderlecht sacked Rene Weiler as manager, just nine days before they face Celtic in the Champions League.

Weiler lasted just nine months and won the Belgian title for Anderlecht, but Rodgers is not sure if the disruption will help Celtic when play in Brussels next week.

“It depends what way Anderlecht go down, what route they go down in terms of management,” said Rodgers. “If it’s an interim manager from the same staff, he may well continue along that road, he may decide to change it.

“If it’s a new manager coming in, they tend to understand, have an idea of the ethos of how they want to play and you look at them. Normally, if they go in that situation, it can revitalise some players and give them a boost or they continue along that vein until something else happens and someone else comes in. We will just have to see where it’s at in a week’s time.”

I was surprised to read that about not playing the same XI. Felt like we had a really settled side at a couple of points last season.

Shame about Bellamy.

Make no mistake we got him at the height of his powers he was a fantastic footballer who I do believe had a soft spot for us and probably liked Celtic growing up. It was a coup getting him.

Tad disappointed with his comments. I thought he had more about him about Celtic & for Scottish game – poor show. He just comes across as a little Sky TV englandur pundit who cannot see further than the premier league/Championship down there.

Say what you want about Sutton but he constantly bigs up our game up here and I see already responded via twitter..good on you Chris!

Another one it seems under the Walker, Burley, Charlie Nic file....

The great irony, of course, being that Craig Bellamy is from a country that as far as English football and the EPL is concerned is little more than a small town in England.

Fortunately Brendan Rodgers is greatly aware that there is more to football beyond West Brom and Stoke and his ambitions are greater than managing in the Sky TV Premier League. I'm sure that he'll go back there one day, but that isn't his reasoning for managing Celtic.

And his mantlepiece will have vastly more medals on it by the end of the day than Craig Bellamy's does.

Reading beyond the headline, I don't think so. He was speaking really about how he himself got less offers after his spell in Scotland (although I'm not sure that six months would be enough on its own to be responsible for that).

I think it was less sensational than it first appeared.

It isn't as sensationalist as it first appeared and the B.S. about rangers was more annoying than the bit about Rodgers.

That said, l'm glad Brendan has replied to point out he is here because of Celtic. It doesn't seem to cross some people's minds Brendan is at Celtic because he loves the club and it means a lot to him to manage us. Worst of all, they seem to think he has to prove himself to them...eff right off!

Bellamy used us as a stop gap in his career, Brendan is here because he wants to be and because it means something to him.

Brendan is here because he loves Celtic and it was right time in his career. He gets it, he is one of us.
He has the measure of them on and off the park, they are looking for anything to unsettle him.
They know as long as he is here they are competing for second at best.
Ignore them and enjoy it while he is here.
