I think we had 3 in the middle doing the same thing. The gap between Griffiths and everyone was huge. Not having a midfielder sitting behind him made a big difference as there was very little support for Roberts/Sinclair and Griffiths.

This made it easier for them playing out from the back, they basically had a spare man and their passing was extremely good. Sinclair chased down but was dragged out of position giving Alves a lot of space.

Bringing on Rogic to fill in that space made a huge difference. Our second half performance was much better and we actually tried to play. Hopefully we start future games with this formation.
and you know why that was because no one trusted the defence enough either to have the system with even one player pushed further forward

and why in practice there was no support for roberts and sinclair

the team were petrified

maybe he is away scouting a centre half for the January transfer window
Yeah, that's all that was missing last night, a decent CB.
'Part frae that we'd a pumped them :)

was meant to be a tongue in cheek comment, if we are to believe posters about Brendan having already identified targets during the last window but failing to get them.

If he had got his way it would have probably meant the scoreline would have been a bit more palatable and not our worst ever home European result.

100%

The players aint totally stupid :twitch: they would've foreseen the writing on the wall (and in the online forums  ).

Anyone who thinks that BR ,and his immediate staff, are satisfied with the outcome of the club's (supposed) endeavours during two transfer windows, is living in proverbial cloud-cuckoo land!

Bit of a myth that he isn`t adaptable, he`s shown that plenty of times including after last seasons first game CL hosing. He has improved almost all of our players but he can`t take most of them up 3 or 4 levels to the level that world class players operate at. He knows we need to be better than the sum of our parts to get anywhere near these guys.

He simply didn`t have the personnel to play a better game defensively last night, whether that`s through his own fault or the boards is speculation.
He will find it very difficult to judge his own players abilities in the SPL and only finds out true potential in these games. Stuart Amstrong, one good half against Inter apart has failed to shine at European level so far. Grifftiths work rate is tremendous and his appetite for the game can`t be questioned but he is short of quality at group CL level. You could go right through the squad and say the same about others.

Lenny and WGS had more defensive minded players in their squads, as has been pointed out previously we don`t have quality of Wanyama, Forster or even Ledley who knew how to fill gaps.

There`s players in the squad to come back who will make us more competitive, but we`re a club buying potential and trying to develop that potential and will take a few bloody noses along the way.

Could have used a more pragmatic approach last night, if we're being honest.

The gap between us and the elite level teams has never been as wide, but there's no excuse for not setting us up a little more defensive.
Don't get this.

We struggled last night not because we went for it too much but because the players looked scared a lot of the time to press the ball together. Manchester City las season is an example of how it works - and we were outstanding. Players sat in (likely against instruction hence Armstrong being hooked at half time) to protect our hopelessly under resourced defence and we got punished for it. We didn't press in packs enough and it left us exposed.

I want to see Celtic having a go at these sides. We shat it a bit last night first half because our defence is pish.

Good post.

Worth pointing out that the team last night were pretty young too. Avg age of 24 for the outfield players. An experienced head like a Ledley could have made a big difference last night. Got to play with what we have though.

Poor in so many aspects tonight

I'll make 3 "controversial" points

1.) Rodgers in naive
2.) Izzaguite "got" European football while KT is getting done
3.) Gordon is no better than Rab Douglas. We need a keeper.

All three points are utter pish.

1) Nonsense
2) Izzy got unfair criticism at times. KT is a kid receiving both OTT praise for his domestic performances, and OTT criticism for his European displays.
3) The first part is nonsense. The second part is spot on; he's aging, and has had a poor start to the season. We should always be looking to freshen the squad

Brendan got the team and tactics wrong last night. That doesn't make him a bad manager. Perhaps he really believed that his team had the ability to take the game to PSG but I would suggest that if he did he would be in a very small minority.
Playing both Sinclair and Roberts left the midfield and defence lightweight and exposed as neither is great going back the way!
The failure to secure a CB in the summer meant giving young Ralston the unenviable job of facing the world's most expensive shampoo. He stuck gamely to his task but should not have been put in to it in the first place!
We would probably still have lost last night but we might have avoided the drubbing we got!

He was specifically referencing the standing off of the PSG players and the failure to even attempt to close them down - He is right.

He is showing he is far from happy -"Showing up" or a "doing" that is what happened - No point in trying to say it wasn't.

Did you think we played anywhere remotely close to our ability last night?

He was 100% correct in his aftermath assessment of the game. We did play like a bunch of scared under12's. First half. Improved in the 2nd, that was more to psg taking the foot off the gas. Not Brendan could do to stop that last night . On that form, psg will hammer many a stronger team than us. We were watching this years champions league winners imo

He should shoulder some blame for that set up last night.

Going by that logic you must want him sacked ?

He should be sacked if we don't secure European football after Christmas.

Or if we lose a game domestically.

If he delivers European football after Christmas and completes a second unbeaten treble then he should stay for 2018/19 too.
