Rightly or wrongly, I can't see BR changing his philosophy in Europe.

When questioned before games against top teams, he admits that our approach will always be the same.
That second sentence isn't true. He said "our style will always be the same in the aggression in which we defend and attack but where the players are very comfortable now is playing in and out of different systems".

The "but" and "different systems " are extremely important.....

Needs to swallow his pride. We aren't going to out play these teams. So why even try?

Since the turn of the century our success in Europe has been built off the back of a solid defence and a formidable keeper. Plus a clinical front line and outstanding work rate. At the moment we have a poor defence, an OK keeper, an imbalanced midfield and an inconsistent front line.

Maybe the gap is growing from Lennon's time but I don't think we help ourselves.
Neil's sides bear Barca and got hammered 6-1 by them.

I completely endorse us trying to play better against these teams.
Totally agree.

The method is one thing, doing it well is another.

Didn't see the game due to work, so relying on on KDS for insight (I know, I know...).

Given the personnel available to us last night, any suggestions for how we should have set up to give ourselves a better chance?

I said before the game that I wanted us to set up with a three at the back, given the players available. It would have meant a shift for the wingers to get back to cover the defensive areas, but I would have preferred that rather than play Bitton in a 4 or throw Ralston in at RB. As it turned out we went for the Ralston at RB option and he had a decent enough game all things considered.

Maybe last night was just the perfect combination of events for us to get a hiding - lack of options in defence, with a team built to attack in the Spfl having to defend against a financialy doped, world class team. I was quite angry last night that we sat off them in the first half, but in the cold light of day when you look back, even if we had chased them about they'd have just passed it around us - they were very composed on the ball, with no weak links.

I think we had 3 in the middle doing the same thing. The gap between Griffiths and everyone was huge. Not having a midfielder sitting behind him made a big difference as there was very little support for Roberts/Sinclair and Griffiths.

This made it easier for them playing out from the back, they basically had a spare man and their passing was extremely good. Sinclair chased down but was dragged out of position giving Alves a lot of space.

Bringing on Rogic to fill in that space made a huge difference. Our second half performance was much better and we actually tried to play. Hopefully we start future games with this formation.

PSG eased off in the second half, still scored two and could have scored more.

Rogic was garbage, a passenger slowly sauntering up the park in a half arsed attempt to offer support to Roberts.

how do you think I know? :suspect:

anyway, it's probably quite normal. Just hoped BR wasn't happy to settle for normal in the face of a record home defeat.

Gordon
Ralston Lustig Jozo Bitton Tierney
Roberts Ntcham Brown Sinclair
Griffiths

I'd start with that v Bayern and PSG H&A from here on in, replacing LG with MD if fit and I'd replace Bitton with Boyata/Sviatchenko depending on who's in form

Block the spaces between our centre and full backs, force them to play through the middle of us. We'd probably still get horsed and it would be just as ugly as last night. I'd rather have a go and get pumped than sit back and take a tanking.

I think we did start th second half brightly and showed some menace.
But it was short lived, and overall PSG bossed the second 45 , scoring 2 without reply.
When we are up against a team of this quality and they are in form frankly we do not have a prayer. BR can cut it any way he likes, we will never have enough to compete in these circumstanes. The margin of defeat is variable, but defeat itself is inevitable.

I think he's been working the last couple of weekends, so sometimes gets a day off during the week to make up for it.
