THE likelihood is PSG will have them gasping for air.

But as long as the French giants have Celtic players breathing heavily down their necks, Brendan Rodgers will be a happy man.

It promises to be exhausting work stopping the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani at Parkhead on Tuesday evening.

They don’t cost over £400million for nothing, you know.

But while boss Rodgers reminds everyone of the enormity of the task his players face in tonight’s Champions League opener, he demands his side get up close and personal.

He said: “I think it should be a great spectacle.

“In these types of games attitude is everything.

“You can’t look too closely at them, or think too emotionally.

“PSG are put together to win this competition, there’s no doubt about that. They’ve brought in Neymar and Mbappe who is an amazing young striker, so their focus is clearly on winning it.

“But we have a courage to play and a courage physically to press and work.

“I always say, if you stand off top class players, they’ll show you why they’re top class.

“But we can be educated in our pressure. I’m also looking forward to seeing how we counter attack.

“This is a level where you have to stay calm. But it’s a game we’re really looking forward to.

“Maybe not many people were watching the Hamilton Accies game on Friday night, but certainly the eyes of the world will be on this game.

“This is a game to go and enjoy. Make no bones about it, this is a superior team to us. That’s the reality of it with the quality of the players and where they’re at.

“But for us we take an attitude into the game. We’re very much a team and have the ability to play in this type of game.

“We have speed, strength and power so it’s a great chance for us to make a good start. It’s going to be a big challenge for us but one we’re determined to embrace.

“They have to feel us breathing very close to them.

“That’s how we play domestically and it’s how we play in other games in this competition.

“You can’t do it for 90 minutes so you have to dip in and out of the pressure. But it’s our job to progress with real aggression.”

Rodgers has thought long and hard about how to approach the mouthwatering Group B game.

He’s even sat his men down and asked them about their experiences of standing toe-to-toe with the best players in the world.

Rodgers, for instance, quizzed Jozo Simunovic on going up against Leo Messi a year ago, with the Celtic defender giving him a surprising insight.

Rodgers added: “I remember talking to Jozo last year and I said ‘go on and tell me, what was it like to face Messi?’

“He told me ‘every time I turned round he was staring at me!’

“Jozo just said ‘he was looking at me and it unnerved me.

“That’s the level of player — the likes of Messi and Suarez don’t go to the ball, the ball comes to them. All they are looking for is the space.

“When they see a guy move they move. Messi last year was just watching and waiting for his moment as you saw for his first goal and when they sense it they have the speed to get in there.

“They also have the technique to finish. You don’t get that look in Scotland — well you do but they might be looking for something else!

“They stare in a physical way — ‘what are you doing big yin?’

“But the players are in the cauldron. I’m a coach and I see the game but it’s important to ask a player what they learned.

“I asked Mikael Lustig what he’s gained from playing against Neymar four times. It’s important because these are the guys in the game.

“Us coaches can see things, the media make the right passes from the stand but the guys who are on the pitch are in a different sport altogether.

“It’s important to get the feedback from them.

“There’s also maybe something you can share with another player.”

Money talks in world football these days with PSG’s riches seeing them shout from the rooftops. The likes of Celtic just cannot keep up.

Rodgers said: “Money does dictate things, that’s the simplicity of it.

“We now have to go through an extra qualification phase next year and that’s for one reason; to give the other leagues with more financial clout an extra place.

“The countries with the teams with the most money are getting the extra places. And the nations that don’t quite have that financial clout have to go through a harder pathway.

“That’s a frustration because a club like this with the history and tradition it has — this is a huge club.

“But it’s something that you have to do and until it changes and we get ten billionaires coming to Scotland it’s what we have to do.

“There has to be a sense of reality.

“We talk about making a mark on the group — with Paris St Germain and Bayern Munich, and Anderlecht.

“You cannot get carried away and try to pretend that we are something we are not.

“We are a club playing in a country where we have to fight our way through — we have a budget where one of their players would get paid more.

“That’s the reality of where we’re at.

“So I don’t think anyone would say we were insignificant if we didn’t come out the group stages.

“But of course, for our own performance level and for the nation, we are trying to gain credibility.

“And obviously, as professionals, we want to continue in Europe until after Christmas.

“But you have to understand the size of the task. It’s not just Playstation. It’s top, top players we are playing.”

This is the best Celtic side since the days of MO'N.

We've been handed 2 absolute thumpings under Rodgers. Poorer Celtic sides have been more competitive. I recall being scundered after losing 3-0 at home to Juve.

Is Rodgers being naive in Europe or is this just indicitave of the gulf in finances in modern football?

It's a bit of both. Also the players these days believe the hype and seem awestruck by these teams.

He has consistently said he wants his team to play in one way....sometimes you just have to park the bus and pray ??

The defence was his Achilles at Liverpool too.

it might be the best team but it's far from the best defence. Even at full strength we should have upgraded at CB to give at least three at the jozo, boyata level. Ajer will never get there or erik.

I think this team is better than Lennons best side but the difference is Rodgers wants to try and play football and go toe to toe and when we do it with the very best we invarably get pumped.

His inability to sign any defender all summer has been brutally exposed.

Much like Barca away, we decided to sit off and let PSG play pretty football triangles round us and stand and admire them. When we then got the ball, we'd make maybe 2-3 passes then immediately gift possession back.

When we actually got the ball in a dangerous area, we were surrounded by 4 PSG players and not a single green shirt to be seen.

We didn't have any sort of plan. Did we want to counter them? Or were we wanting to keep possession? Too many players were contradicting each other in their movements.

We can't really progress if we constantly just put 10 behind the ball in Europe. You either have a philosophy or you don't. BR wants to play a certain way and eventually that is what will get us further than just qualifying for the groups. Blood and snotters isn't going to hack it. We will improve, as we did last year. KTF.

Think that is unfair personally. His tactics cost us again Barcelona, and maybe Gladbach at home last year, but he tried to defend today. PSG's front three is maybe the best in football. Their fullbacks maybe the best available. Centre backs are brilliant. Verratti was Barcelonas top target in the summer because he might be the best centre mid out there. They'll beat better teams than us, whether we sat 11 behind the ball or went gung-ho

Give me hard to beat over some half baked philosophy the players are either incapable or too scared to implement every day of the week.

Strachan, O'Neill and Lennon all knew what it took to get Celtic to compete in Europe and it wasn't going toe to toe with some of the best in the world in the hope that some years down the line it will click in to place.

The gulf in class is such that 5-4-1 is the only option against sides like this

A total crock of shampoo

BR got us into the Cl with an amateur back four v Astana where we collapsed v diddies

And having got us the money

He got the square root of eff all support to strengthen the defence

A rb at centre half and a boy with 8 appearances v Neymar

The twats on our board don't have an effin clue and repeatedly do not support our manager

Lennon left cause of no support and sure as eff BR will do too

But PL is on the ECA so whoop di do

Tactics cost in Barcelona? Please

We were losing that game no matter what.

Yes we have suffered some big defeats up against the elite but that's the nature of European football for clubs in similar positions to us.
Better sides than us will get hammered by PSG.

We're capable of pressing. Look at Man City at home.

We shat it tonight. Again.

I'd happily take a pumping if we were actually pressing them and they pass through us. That didn't happen though. Far too passive and shipping avoidable goals.
