A combination of no strikers fit and to many players off the boil. Bad luck is to blame . Manager under pressure . Oh my god

Pre season is down to him, the wait for the EPL squad transfer strategy is his. Injuries, that's unlucky yes, but of course he is under pressure.

Despite what earlier posts say it's not a team with an excellent cl pedigree we were up against, but they still created the best chances. At the moment we're lucky not to be all but out. If we play more games like that we will be.

We're not a team with an excellent CL pedigree either.

This place is mental sometimes.

I don't know what he could have done differently last night
Include an effin striker in the squad.
He did.

🎙️#CelticFC manager Brendan Rodgers spoke to the media today ahead of Saturday's #DafabetCup17 clash with @SunderlandAFC
💬 BR on team news: "Will mix it up. 1 or 2 players who played the other night will play, some, with little knocks, we'll need to keep back."
💬 BR: "Most important game is next Wednesday but a chance for some players to play & get some game-time & for some of our younger players."
💬 BR on @Leighgriff09 latest: "Will wait & see. Over the weekend, we'll see what his reaction is to working outside, same with @eriksviat "
💬 BR on #UCL 2nd-leg: "Reality is at this time in the season, we aren't going to be at the same level of fitness as the other team."
💬 BR: "Doesn't make it any easier in that we are missing two top strikers and Dedryck Boyata. Take those 3 players out & can be difficult."
💬 BR: "The players have been brilliant. Other night, we played with no striker, trying to find a way, and most important we didn't concede."
💬 BR: "Never going to be perfect as so early on, but we found a way not to concede, which gives us a great opportunity for the 2nd-leg."
BR on promoting @JackAitchison7 for #UCL tie: "A 17-year-old boy who needs time to develop. An excellent young player but not his time."💬
BR: "I think one of my strengths is gauging when it's the right time and moment for a young player."
BR on scoring over in Norway: "Game will open up a bit more over there. Huge pressure on them, playing at home. Should open more space."

Quote:

CELTIC fly down to Sunderland to face the English side in competition for the Dafabet Cup in a game that also celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Stadium of Light and Hoops manager, Brendan Rodgers will juggle his side ahead of Wednesday’s vital UEFA Champions League qualifier with Rosenborg in Norway.

The manager said: “We’ll mix it up. There are one or two players who played the other night who will play, there are obviously some we will keep back as they have knocks and our most important game is next Wednesday. There’s also a chance for other players to get some game-time.

“Then there are some of the young players, some of the kids that have been training with us and haven’t played so much, so it’s a bit of a mixture of the squad.”

The Hoops will travel to Norway with the tie deadlocked at 0-0 following the first leg at Celtic park on Wednesday when the side went into the match without either of their two recognised first-team strikers in Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths.

However, the manager feels that his side can conjure up the scoring chances they will need to progress to the next round of the competition.

He said: “You give credit to Rosenborg as they came in and sat very deep with little real inclination to attack, so they really denied us space, though there were a couple of wee moments.

“There were a couple of two-minute spells in the game when they had a bit of rhythm and apart from that we had a real good domination of the game.

“We had good control of it but we just couldn’t find a way to get through and take some chances but I think the game will open up a wee bit more over there.

“There’s a huge pressure on them. They are playing at home and they will want to show that they are team with the initiative playing at home, so that should open up a bit more space.”

The manager also praised Tom Rogic for adopting an unfamiliar role in spearheading Celtic’s attempts at breaking down the Norwegian defence in the opening leg.

He said: “I thought Tom did very, very well in a really difficult situation. He can play that role but I think what was key the other night when they were so low in their defensive block that, even in his normal position, there was no real space to operate in.

“Tom’s best position is obviously deeper than that, but I thanked him this morning because he did a big favour for the team.

“Jonny Hayes went up there also in the second half and his speed then gave a different dynamic to the team.”

With some crying out for Atchison to play I had a feeling this was going to be the reason. if he is not ready, I fully agree with Brendan.

If your interpretation is that "KDS panic merchants" think Rodgers is under pressure to keep his job, horse shampoo.

If your interpretation is that "KDS panic merchants" think Rodgers is under pressure to progress to the final UCL qualifier, as Deila and Lennon were before him, spot on.

Exactly. Of course he's under pressure, pressure to get to the last qualifying round. No one is talking about sacking the man. :ffs:

Not sure I'm following the logic of BR's comments about not having three top strikers at the club.

If that means the third striker has to be around Cifti's level then it makes no sense to leave him unregistered for two crucial games when it looks like the top strikers are out. I can understand not wanting to throw a young player into these games but surely Cifti being up there would have made things even slightly better? I don't see how it can make them much worse.

Leaving a squad size of 22 (13 midfielders) as Ciftci isn't in the Euro list.

Edited to add 20 players "fit" to play. 13 of whom are midfielders.
