It does seem a bit of an odd one but I can't say I'm overly bothered. Didn't know he had a son who was a professional footballer well into his career. If we ended up signing him I'd be concerned.* You wouldn't get the likes of Alex Ferguson or Brian Clough doing that.

As an aside, didn't we play a British Army chef at Old Trafford once when the season was underway (think Chic Charnley also played that night)? Obviously different times but we recovered from that.

*Joking aside, I would be concerned.
Did we not sign him ? We signed 2 'heroes' :ph43r: at the same time did we not? Forget their names.
Gary Holt and Justin Whittle - Macari signings on the recommendation of Paddy Crerand.
Thems the ones.

Doting dad Brendan Rodgers relishing rare chance to aid son Anton's football career with Celtic stint

THE Celtic game against Blau-Weiss Linz in Rohrbach on Wednesday evening was a typical pre-season affair. The opposition was the local part-time team and only a few hundred supporters were in attendance. To say it was low-key was an understatement.

But it was an occasion that Brendan Rodgers, who gave his son Anton a run-out in the second half, will never forget all the same. It was the first time he had taken charge of a team his boy had played for. It was clearly a special moment. His parental pride was obvious afterwards.

Rodgers Jnr, a professional footballer who has spent time at Chelsea, Brighton and Oldham Athletic, was released by English League One club Swindon Town at the end of last season. He is training with the Scottish champions here in Austria in a bid to get himself fit and secure a move to a new club ahead of the new campaign.

Yet, injuries to Eboue Kouassi and Kristoffer Ajer meant that a place in the BW Linz game unexpectedly became available. The visitors fielded a completely different XI in the second half to the first.

The opportunities for newspaper headline writers were endless as Brendan’s Bhoy took to the field in what was very much a Celtic Family affair.

“As you can imagine, it was a wee bit nervy for him as he came here to train and all of a sudden he was playing in a Celtic pre-season friendly,” said Rodgers.

“But he’s played around 100-odd league games so he’s used to playing. When we were putting together the teams we thought he could play so there was no special treatment. Playing with good players helped him too.”

The presence of the midfielder with the Celtic squad in Austria and his selection for the BW Linz game has inevitably been questioned by some. Rodgers, though, is unconcerned about how his involvement may be perceived. He is just delighted to have what is a rare opportunity to assist his son out in his career.

“I’m not worried,” he said. “I’m not the first manager in the world who has had a son who played football. It’s more important to me that I have a son, that the father and son relationship is there.

“I spend my life trying to help staff, helping players, helping them financially and making their lives better. I probably see my son less than most. I see you guys (the Scottish press) more than him. I am in a position where I can help him.

“I have no worries on that score. It’s the first time I have ever worked with him. I have always been aware of that. He is the same as everyone else. He is here to work, to get himself fit.

“We’re very close and he sees the game how I see the game. For a young guy he’s got talent. He wants to play forward passes and open up the game and he’s comfortable.”

It would possibly have looked bad if Anton had performed poorly. But the 24-year-old acquitted himself well. He put in a tireless shift in the centre of the park and distributed the ball intelligently. There is, though, no chance of him being signed permanently.

“I’ve always wanted to maintain a father son relationship,” said Rodgers. “I’m not always a nice guy as a manager. That’s the first time he’s played for me.

“He was out of contract and, as a demanding father, I said to him ‘don’t be on holiday too long’. If he’s going to go in somewhere in July he has to be working before then.

“I said to him to come up with us and do a couple of weeks training and then he’ll be ready to go on to his next club with a decent level of fitness.

“There’s no use him lying on a beach somewhere. He has to work. The same rules apply across the board whether he’s my son or someone else.

“He’s a great kid with a brilliant football brain and he mixes well with others. There is no drama or issue with him. He can play football. He’ll move on from there. He knows clearly where he is at with us.”

Asked if a move to a Scottish club was a possibility, Rodgers said: “He has a son in Reading. He has got to be more down south I would think. Most of the English clubs don’t start till July and this is a chance for him to get fit with a brilliant bunch of guys here.”

Celtic won the Linz game 1-0 thanks to a late James Forrest goal. But the outcome was unimportant to Rodgers.

With a Champions League qualifier against either La Fiorita or Linfield – who are leading the first qualifying round tie 1-0 after the first leg at Windsor Park on Wednesday evening - looming early next month he is keen to get his charges fitness and match sharpness up quickly and the exercise served its purpose perfectly.

“The most important thing for us was the fitness element of the game,” he said. “After the boys being off for a number of weeks it was good to get back out there.

“They’ve been working really hard since coming here and pushing themselves physically. So it was nice to mix the teams up.

“We still have a way to go in terms of our sharpness, but that’ll come as the pre-season goes on. Looking at the shape and the comfort of the way the team is playing it was good to see. There is a big difference from where we were last year.”

Celtic completed the signing of Kundai Benyu, the 19-year-old Ipswich Town midfielder who played for English National League club Aldershot Town last season and has been involved with the Zimbabwe national team in the past.

Rodgers, who stressed the teenager is one for the future and will probably not feature in his first teams, feels that he only needs to add one more quality player to his group before the Champions League qualifiers get underway later this month.

“I didn’t think the group needed surgery,” he said. “We didn’t need to go out and get a whole raft of players. The club didn’t need that.

“The club invested in some players in the last few years who have shown within the environment and the coaching that they have improved.

“I look at them and think: ‘Okay they can improve even more’. Because what they’ve achieved last year is going to give them real confidence to kick on.

“But, as always, I felt there were a few areas where we needed to bring someone in.

“We got the best player outside of Celtic in Jonny Hayes. In my time he was the one player I always had in the back of my mind could hurt us.

“In every game he showed his pace, his power. He scored 11 goals and had 24 assists. Knowing Jonny as a kid I knew the impact he could have.

“Pat going back to Man City meant I needed to have Scotty, James and one other. If something opens up later on for Pat to come back, or someone else to come in, then fine. But certainly I am probably looking at one other to come in.

“We need that stability to get us through the Champions League and my experience of English football is that teams are not even in down south. Managers are still lying on a beach throughout Europe.

“I am going to take some young players away on pre-season with me and it might take until the middle of July before I even consider what my squad is going to be.

“I only want to bring in quality. I can go on bringing in a lot of players, but I don’t need them.”

Rodgers handed game time to youngsters Jack Aitchison, Conor Hazard, Jamie McCart, Calvin Miller and Anthony Ralston in the friendly against Blau-Weiss Linz on Wednesday night and confirmed he is keen to bring through more kids in the coming months.

“I want to develop these players more this year as well as bring and then develop some of the young players like Michael Johnston or Anthony Ralston,” he said. “These boys will come up into the squad.”

Rodgers has only made one major summer signing by spending £1.3million for Aberdeen winger Jonny Hayes — but he’s getting ready to do more business.

He added: “We hope we can get one more in. I didn’t think the group needed surgery.

“We need that stability to get us through the Champions League.

Rodgers is looking for his side to step up a gear in their pre-season preparation today when they take on Rapid Vienna in Amstetten in Austria.

The Hoops boss admitted the camp is in much better shape than when he arrived for the build-up to last year’s campaign.

He said: “It’s night and day. I was watching the players as they came in and they are fit, they are sharp and it’s a case of topping up.

“We have introduced elements to them but they are in a brilliant place.

“Whenever you measure them coming back you see their body fat levels, body composition - it’s what I expect it to be for top athletes.

“The level of training has been first-class and it will be interesting when you speak to Jonny Hayes to hear what he thinks about coming in to this level.

“For me there is a clear difference and going into the Champions league there’s a tactical concept that is clear and we look forward to improving it.”

BRENDAN RODGERS has revealed that even last season’s historic Treble hasn’t stopped him fearing the SACK at Celtic.

That worry for the Hoops boss is a legacy of being ruthlessly axed at Liverpool months after coming close to winning the Premier League.

And it’s not changed even after going unbeaten and winning everything domestically in the last campaign.

He said: “I am not secure in my job. After an experience has gone I am looking over my shoulder. I can never rest. Am I secure? No chance.

“Not in the modern game. Even here. This is new football, it’s totally different.

“I’ve seen it, look at Claudio Ranieri, it’s modern football.

“As a manager you either walk on water — or you’re the devil.

“That could be within the space of two days.

“For me, I don’t get too carried away when we win, or too disappointed when we lose.

“We are just focused on winning. We never plan to lose, we want to win, because if you don’t then you lose focus.

“There’s always something in modern football. I said it last year.

“We were 1-0 down to St Mirren at half-time and there was banging on the dugout.

“There is a different mentality now. You look at the longevity of the managers, it’s very tough.

“That’s why you can never be comfortable and that has to feed through to the players.

“That’s the fear, but it’s a positive fear. I meet lots of Celtic supporters and quite a lot of them will say, ‘you’re doing well — at the moment’.

“Our message is we always want to win.

“When we came in this season we said to the players what was done last season was amazing.

“But let’s not say it’s once in a lifetime. What makes you think we can’t do it again?

“The target is to win every game. What we have done is celebrate the success, but we are back hungrier and more ready than last year.

“It’s been brilliant. We want to have friendships for life. We will all be when we leave, but it’s about really making our mark while we are here.

“The best time to capitalise on success is the present.

“You have to be ruthless. You can’t go soft.

“There’s no point in talking about being ruthless after you’ve lost eight games. It’s too late.

“There is a time to be ruthless and that is why we are ready to go again.

“Success is a moving target. You have to look to be better all of the time and I see that here.

“It’s important to have humility, but I also see the backs are straighter, the shoulders are up. That’s what we want.”

Rodgers had an uneasy time in last season’s early Champions League bid when his side lost to minnows Red Imps.

But he insisted: “It’s night and day now. I was watching the players as they came in and they are fit, they are sharp, it’s a case of topping up.

“We have introduced elements to them but they’re in a brilliant place.

“Whenever you measure them coming back you see their body fat levels, body composition.

“It’s what I expect it to be for top athletes.

“The level of training has been first-class.

“It will be interesting to hear what Jonny Hayes thinks about coming in to this level.

“For me there is a clear difference, going into the Champions League there’s a tactical concept that is clear and we look forward to improving it.

“These games sometimes trip you up and I know the words that were used after that game last season.

“It was a freakish result but we knew we’d get better. We didn’t get carried away with us being written off.

“It was about us dealing with pressure, looking at working better and better, which is what happened.”

BRENDAN RODGERS called upon the Celtic players’ FAMILIES to inspire them to the last leg of their Invincible Treble.

The Hoops boss stunned his stars when they gathered for a team meeting on the eve of the Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen on May 27.

Rodgers used a projector screen to display individual messages of support for every player from their families.

The Celtic boss also had a surprise in store when his stars entered the Hampden dressing room to prepare for the final.

Those same messages had been placed inside envelopes and sat next to the players’ lockers.

It took a lot of planning from the Hoops boss but that touch meant a lot to Rodgers’ squad.

Mikael Lustig posted an emotional Instagram photograph of his own message from wife Josefin and daughters Lucia and Lexie.

It read: ‘Mikael, Beach ball, derby goal, rabona – can’t wait to see what happens next season. Love you.’

Rodgers’ motivational techniques worked as Tom Rogic scored the late winner against Aberdeen to secure a historic clean sweep.

The Celtic boss also showed his man-management skills ahead of the 3-0 Betfred Cup Final victory over the Dons — the first leg of the Treble.

Weeks before the game, Scott Brown scanned Celtic’s fixture list for November and December, and realised he had a minor problem.

As captain, one of Brown’s responsibilities is to organise the Christmas night out. Yet finding a date for the 2016 festivities was proving problematic.

Few football teams stay in their home city for the annual outing.

Tales of Celtic’s centenary season squad doing shuttle runs in fancy dress along Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street around Christmas 1987 spoke of a more innocent era.

In those days, players could gather in a local pub, knock back a few drinks and nobody would bother them. With social media and smartphones, times have changed.

In 2016, London was the Celtic players’ choice, but a congested fixture list provided just one window of opportunity.

Football always comes first. Brown knew he could only pencil in their Christmas bonding trip if they had no midweek match in the days following.

But with 12 games in a six-week period in the lead up to Christmas, the only possible date of departure was the day of the Betfred Cup Final.

Brown raised the topic of the squad’s London outing and the prospect of getting two days off after the final in one of his daily chats with Rodgers.

He had no issue with his players going away to hopefully celebrate their first trophy of the season — but wanted to ensure full focus ahead of such an important fixture.

Rodgers gave Brown the go-ahead to arrange the party, with certain conditions.

The Celtic captain agreed to them and three days before the final, the players who had signed up for London arrived at Lennoxtown, armed with suitcases containing their clothes for the trip.

The luggage was collected by Celtic’s kitmen and placed in storage. Rodgers didn’t want to even glimpse the London cases, filled with designer clothes, in the team hotel ahead of the cup final, so the players wouldn’t see their belongings again until after the faced Aberdeen.

Their sole focus was on winning the first trophy of the season and the 100th major honour in Celtic’s history.

As the Hoops players strolled out on to the Hampden pitch in green New Balance tracksuits they looked like a team ready to go to work.

In contrast, the Aberdeen party looked far more dapper in their grey trousers and navy blazers with flowers in the lapel.

But Rodgers and his players knew the final was about substance, not style. Gathering them together in a dressing-room circle before kick-off, he spoke about Celtic’s past, present and future.

He told them they could follow in the footsteps of legends and win the club’s 100th major trophy.

Rodgers spoke about the progress they had made in the first half of the season and how this was the chance to mark the start of a new era with a trophy.

In closing, he urged the players to be on that Hampden podium celebrating at the end.

The Hoops didn’t have a single failure as they outclassed Aberdeen in a comfortable win.

Rodgers secured his first trophy as Celtic manager as the club reached a significant landmark.

The club had prepared for winning a historic century of trophies, with huge neon letters bearing ‘CFC’ and ‘100’ set up at the Celtic Park entrance.

Supporters gathered behind the steel barriers outside the stadium on that cold November night, waiting for a glimpse of their manager.

It was after 7pm when Rodgers stepped up to a microphone to address them.

Standing in the shadow of Jock Stein’s statue, he sat the Betfred Cup down beside him and made a short speech.

The Hampden success gave the manager and his entire staff something tangible to show for their work in the first six months of his reign.

There was a real sense of achievement as the celebrations inside Celtic Park hit full swing — but Rodgers was content to slip away quietly.

He left the partying to Brown and his London-bound team-mates — urging them to “have a real good time”.

As Rodgers was settling down at home with tea and toast to watch a replay of the final, the Celtic players were touching down in England — with those suitcases in hand.

Nice story. Love Lustig's letter (as seen above in Zurawski 7's post).

Family values Brendan Rodgers called upon Celtic players’ FAMILIES to inspire them to Scottish Cup win over Aberdeen and secure their Invincible Treble
The Hoops boss used a projector screen to display individual messages of support for every player and also had a surprise in Hampden dressing room

I love him to bits, but that is a stupid statement.
You can only ever do anything in the present, it's nonsensical.
I get his point & I hope lawell does too.

You can plan to do things in the future. Nothing stupid about that statement.

Think Gordon Parks is having a breakdown.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers is beyond criticism after Treble but Europe is now the testing ground and the tide can turn - Gordon Parks
Gordon says Rodgers playing his son Anton in a friendly is a first wrong step from the Irishman but after Treble a blind eye should be turned.

Made up effing nonsense. How come everyone was a free scoring football genius in the past? Was no one shampoo in the 70's and 80's? Cause I was pretty hopeless.

As a dress rehearsal before the real action gets underway for Celtic, there were plenty of positives to take from their demolition of Shamrock Rovers yesterday afternoon. Nine goals spread throughout the team, some much-needed match fitness tucked under the belt and a goal for Moussa Dembele on his first start since hobbling off with a hamstring injury in April's Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers.

But as worthwhile an exercise as this was, it looked to be coming at a price, as captain Scott Brown gingerly hobbled off injured during the first half to be replaced by Nir Bitton. But manager Brendan Rodgers played down fears of a sweat over his captain's fitness with the all-important Champions League qualifiers looming.

“Broony had a sore Achilles," Rodgers revealed. "The surface was very good but he just felt his Achilles.

“He should be fine. He’s been fine until today. There’s no need to risk and that’s one of the key elements to pre-season games.”

With or without Brown though, Celtic should have more than enough in the tank to see off Linfield over two legs, and they displayed their daunting firepower here to sweep Rovers aside with ease.

With the trip to Windsor Park on the horizon, Rodgers named a strong lineup at the Tallaght Stadium. He had intimated before the match that he may look to strengthen his defensive options on the back of the news that Dedryck Boyata faces an extended spell of up to three months on the sidelines with a medial ligament injury, but Erik Sviatchenko took his place beside Jozo Simunovic here at the heart of the backline, perhaps giving a pointer as to how their defence will shape up for the trip to Belfast.

There were clear signs of rustiness at the back straight away though, with a free header gifted to Rovers striker Sean Boyd, but Rodgers was delighted overall with how the backline performed.

“I thought it was an excellent exercise,” he said. “Another step up in our fitness. Really pleasing is how we defended. It’s key fundamentally to how we do things.

“You see the intensity and pressure from first minute to last. Front players defending forward gets the team up the pitch and the hunger to keep a clean sheet and get the ball was very evident. It was very concentrated. Sometimes you get to three, four (goals) and go flat.

“That’s not how we work. You earn your money by doing it through the 90 minutes. The players are at a good level. I’m very pleased.”

Goals from Mikael Lustig, two from Stuart Armstrong, one from Dembele, a double from Scott Sinclair and single strikes from James Forrest, Jonny Hayes and Tom Rogic put the sorry hosts to the sword, with a first Celtic goal for winger Hayes after replacing Forrest on the hour another pleasing aspect of the day from a Celtic point of view.

The winger celebrates his 30th birthday today, and he was delighted to celebrate the milestone in fine style.

“It was obviously nice to come home,” Hayes said. I had a lot of friends and family at the game, it’s 10 minutes from where I grew up.

“I was delighted to get on first and foremost, but then to score a goal was a nice feeling all round.

“After the game we went around and I was seeing people in every stand that I know and my phone is going mental.

“It’s obviously a proud moment, but you’ll take goals wherever you can. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pre-season friendly or a cup final, you’re always happy to chip in.

“Everyone has been so welcoming, the staff of the park, the players, the manager. To see how humble everyone is at the club and with the mind-set everyone has, it’s really easy to settle in.

“It’s been terrific and I’ve enjoyed it from the first day.”

The exciting displays of both Forrest in the opening hour and Hayes in the last half hour hinted that a friendly rivalry could be developing for that place on the right wing, and Hayes thinks it will help to push both players on.

“I played against James for a number of years and I knew how he good he is, and since I’ve come in he’s done well in training too,” he said. “He’s a top-class player.

“There’s competition for places and I knew what I was coming into. I knew I wasn’t going to be playing straight away, and that I as coming into a bigger squad.

“It’s up to me to try and break in.”

“It’s just another game and everywhere we go, trams are going to want to beat us. No matter who we play against, everyone looks forward to playing Celtic.

“It will be nice to get the competitive games back come Friday night.”

Parks: Celtic scored 8 but so did I once when I was wee

There are times when you look at scorelines and hark back to a time where you were a top schoolboy phenomenon.

Celtic put the octagon past the Shamrocks today in a celebration of all things green but my mind was elsewhere. Anywhere in fact.

It settled eventually on my days in schools football, after a lengthy daydream about Graham Dorrans.

You see I was the star striker in Primary 6. Up front and proud. Making people happy.

Another boy in another team scored some goals too. I wasn't bothered at all, in the slightest, didn't even know about it even when my Dad told me at the time.

I'm not going to say I was a better player. But I was.

And that brings me to the game today. 8 goals, scored by Celtic, the invincible champions.

I say SO WHAT.

When I was a mere nipper, I scored more than that in one game. Honest I really did. All my family were there including my dead Gran. She desperately wanted to see her favourite score some goals. More goals than Celtic. In ONE game.

I never did get the cup I deserved too. God knows, or cares, where it went. Probably to some Irish poverty charity somewhere.

But that's life.

My tip for the league - Rangers.
