Really good fans Q&A recorded last night with BR on the TwentyMinuteTims podcast. Available here.

Good to see he's identified the areas of the team he wants to strengthen. Pretty much the same as the consensus on here; centre back, a number 8 type midfielder and a powerful and pacey winger.

Interesting answer on the Griffiths situation too.
Go on . . . .
Goes against the grain of many on here, by saying you can't just drop a striker if they have a couple of dry games. Need to let them build confidence again and you can't drop them out the team. Think I agree with that too.

Also says he wants three top strikers here, and very much wants Griffiths to be one of those three.
We should always strive to have three capable strikers in the squad, it's a no brainer.

I agree with you but plying 4-5-1 makes that difficult. Players want game time and that int possible with three strikers.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers says he wants to "give more years" to the club, who are on the brink of a sixth consecutive league title.

I get that, for me you replace the unhappy one at seasons end and get someone else in to fight for a place, repeat if necessary. Someone will lose out over the piece but that's the nature of competition, under Brendan I don't think we'll be short of good players willing to try their luck.

I also believe we will see two up front at some stage, that hasn't been possible this season, it's been a balancing act with a little too much asked of Moussassin at times.

Theme was lack of competition rather than quality of Celtic was the reason behind why we were unbeaten in the domestic season. Strangely mahatma was interviewed and did say he felt it was more to do with the impact of BR but overall looked like a cheap shot at Scottish football akin to the recent Times hatchet job.

On the plus side long time since Scottish football got that kind of airtime on the UK BBC. No such thing as bad publicity and all that. :twitch:

BRENDAN Rodgers will get preparations for next season’s Champions League qualifiers underway after the William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final later this month by giving his key Celtic players time off.

The Scottish champions, who will win their sixth consecutive title if they beat Hearts at Tynecastle tomorrow, are undefeated in 36 domestic fixtures and have the chance to create history by going unbeaten for the entire 2016/17 campaign.

But Rodgers is confident his team can maintain their run using fringe players and will have no qualms giving the likes of Stuart Armstrong, Scott Brown, Craig Gordon, Mikael Lustig, Scott Sinclair and Kieran Tierney a break after they play Rangers at Hampden on April 23.

The Northern Irishman is prepared to rest his most influential first team members - even though the Parkhead club will take on their city rivals at Ibrox in the first game after the top six split on April 29.

No fewer than six Celtic players started for Scotland in their 1-0 victory over Slovenia at Hampden on Sunday and should, if fit, be involved in the Russia 2018 qualifier against England on June 10.

Rodgers is already thinking about his charges being in peak condition for the first leg of the Champions League second qualifying round on either July 11 or 12.

“We need to see when we can give them rest,” he said. “It won’t be in the next month. We won’t have any rest over that period. But after that we may be able to have a look at it.

“It won’t happen pre-semi-final because you are in danger of breaking rhythm. For a football player you need to be in rhythm, you need to play. It’s a big game (the semi-final) for us. Take them out of that and they lose rhythm and actually in some way lose fitness.

“There would be quite a few I would have a look at, not just the Scotland players. My duty is to the whole squad. I feel I have a big enough squad to cope with that.”

Rodgers added: “It’s (the unbeaten run) not a big priority for me. My priority is to finish the season as strongly as we can. But I made eight changes away at Ross County and we won and that showed the trust I have in the group.

“But I have to look after the welfare of the players. That is important. That is what I’ve always done because I have to manage forward if we are going to go into the Champions League qualifiers.”

Meanwhile, Rodgers, who has given Brown his blessing to play for his country in the Group F match against England, has revealed that he approached his captain to speak about the issue.

“I asked to speak to him on it,” he said. “I don’t know if he wanted to talk to me or not. But I wanted to remove any sort of burden that might have been on his mind, to make sure he was fine. We had a good chat, which will be private, and on one or two other things within that.

“But it’s a big game, this, and it could be a real defining game. If he’s played in the England game away and he’s played in the last one it’s difficult not to play in the other ones. It’s about helping him, giving him the confidence that ‘okay, play in it, but this is how it’s going to look before and after’.”

Meanwhile, Rodgers has admitted that Armstrong, who made his Scotland debut at the weekend, is capable of playing in the Premier League in England in future. However, he is hopeful the 24-year-old will agree to a new contract even though he has 18 months of his current deal to run.

“He needs to be here for the next couple of years, developing and improving, getting confidence at the highest level he can and keeping consistent with it,” he said.

“Then like some of the other players, there may well be a time for him where, naturally, there is bigger money and bigger possibilities. He won’t go to a bigger club, that’s for sure. But, financially, the game can be much better for him somewhere else.

“I think he’s a really intelligent fella and if he is guided well behind that, he should see that. It wasn’t so long ago he was suffering here. It was difficult for him, so now we have built that confidence up for him, he’s playing the game to a very good level.

“There are still areas he can be better, but there is no doubt he’s a big talent and one I think who will demonstrate that over the coming years.”

Any way its dressed up or down we need one other option up front, at least. We carried Ambrose, O'Connell, Boyata, Erik, Toure and Jozo in to this season at CB and used every one of them, had to, we've even had Lustig start in the middle and seen KT on the Left of a three...We have been fortunate up front, yet here we are looking to remain unbeaten, secure a treble and potentially make history without a natural CF seemingly available.

IT’S not a phrase you’ll find in a coaching manual.

At Celtic’s Lennoxtown training base, you won’t see the words written on a motivational sign.

For Brendan Rodgers, though, there’s a phrase that keeps him grounded.

‘A slap on the back is only six inches from a slap on the a**e.’

In other words, don’t get too carried away with success.

As he contemplated a sixth straight league title for Celtic, Rodgers said: “The joy is seeing the response of the players.

“But you can never get too carried away.

“I was once told by a very intelligent man that a slap on the back is only six inches from a slap on the a**e.

“So you always have to be careful. But being careful allows you to progress.

“If you want to progress and you want to succeed, you have to keep pushing.”

Rodgers has ticked every box so far on his list of targets.

The job he’s done has been a remarkable one, from qualifying for the Champions League to getting within touching distance of a Treble.

But what will it all mean to him?

Rodgers added: “It will mean a hell of a lot.

“It will be a demonstration of the work from our very first day on June 19 when we came in.

“This was one of the trophies we targeted. Before I came in the team had won five titles and there was expectancy.

“But could we win it in the best way possible?

“I think the players are winning it in the best way they possibly could with the level of performance, consistency and professionalism they’ve shown.

“Having that style has always been the way. It’s the traditions of this club.

“You win, but there’s a way to win. As manager the job is to uphold those traditions.

“It’s also how I work. I demand a lot and these players have been absolutely amazing.

“When you think of the history of this club since 1888, only two managers have won the Treble.

“But I’m one for constant improvement.

“I was in with the coaching staff this morning for 20 minutes looking at video and areas where, tactically, we can be better and better.

“What’s pleasing for me has been the relationship between the training and the games.

“When I came in it was a question of, ‘Can we develop a mental strength that can get us through a tough qualification having just come together?’.

“Once we did that we were able to roll out the football aspect and tactically bring the game to another level.”

One of the Celtic stand-outs for the season has been midfielder Stuart Armstrong.

A year ago, his career was going nowhere fast.

Now he is one of the first names on Rodgers’ team-sheet and taking international football in his stride.

The Hoops boss added: “In Stuart the other night, I saw a player who’s very happy in his game and how he’s developed.

“When I first came here, he was the one player who stood out for me in his technique and everything.

“I said a couple of months ago that he is built for that top level of the game.

“His technique, his speed, the power in his running, and tactically he’s improving all of the time.

“Mentally, he’s now become attuned to playing for a big club. He fills the shirt now, he understands it and he lives with the pressure.

“He can do that and I think he had that familiarity with the other boys all being synchronised in their work.

“He was fantastic. There are areas of the game he could improve, but he was top class.

“Stuart was 25 on Thursday so, hopefully, there will be a good number of years to come for him in the national team.”

Armstrong’s contract is due for renewal and Rodgers is confident the midfielder won’t get itchy feet this summer.

He added: “I think he needs to be here for the next couple of years, developing and improving, getting confidence at the highest level he can and keeping consistent with it.

“Then like some of the other players, there may well be a time for him where, naturally, there is bigger money and bigger possibilities.

“He won’t go to a bigger club, that’s for sure.

“But, financially, the game can be much better for him somewhere else.

“I think he is a really intelligent fella and if he is guided well behind that, he should see that.

“It wasn’t so long ago he was suffering here.

“It was difficult for him, so now we’ve built that confidence up for him, he’s playing the game to a very good level.

“There are still areas he can be better, but there is no doubt he’s a big talent and one who I think will demonstrate that over the coming years.”

An absent friend will again drift through the mind of Brendan Rodgers if his Celtic team can seal the deal and clinch the title with a victory at Tynecastle this afternoon. A predecessor in the Irishman’s role who would have thanked the heavens to experience the championship success that effectively Rodgers had banked – with golden returns – months ago.

“I think of the great man Tommy Burns, who never ever won a title here [as a manager]. And you think of the commitment he gave to the club and the privilege it is for me to lead the club when we actually do get over the line,” said Rodgers, pictured above. “There will be many thoughts for many people and hopefully they can be proud of the work we have done. Yeah, it’s been a great season so far but we want to get the job done as quickly as we can.

“If we can, to then win the league while unbeaten is a great achievement. Then we can really focus on the [Scottish Cup] semi-final. That’s why I can’t really give the players too much rest. Because they lose rhythm and we have to be careful of that. We want to arrive at the semi-final in the best possible place we can be.”

In arriving in Edinburgh today unbeaten in 36 domestic games, Celtic can be the first team to secure the title without losing a game since Rangers in 1900. They have already posted the longest unbeaten run since the start of a season in the post-war age courtesy of also winning the League Cup, and after qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in three years last August, Kenny Dalglish has said that were Celtic to do the domestic clean sweep with a Scottish Cup success, really that would represent a quadruple to all intents and purposes. Indeed, it is worth imagining the different light in which Rodgers’ work across his nine months in Glasgow would have been viewed had Celtic conceded one more goal to Hapoel Beer-Sheva in Israel after going 2-0 down inside 48 minutes of the return leg of their Champions League play-off.

“Absolutely,” said Rodgers. “For my own feeling and where I wanted the club to go and all the things you see, that’s why Champions League football is important. For my legacy here I want to create a team that’s a joy on the field for supporters to watch. One with an attacking and aggressive idea to win.

“But I also want to help the club off the field in every possible way I can. Of course that’s finance and the only way you can do that is qualification of the Champions League.

“A lot of people told me when I came in that Celtic had won the double but they all referenced they hadn’t qualified for the Champions League. So there is no doubt it’s a huge measure here and I’m sure if that time ever comes for myself then I’m sure I’ll get reminded of it. It’s certainly something that is an absolute huge achievement. It may not be for other teams, for clubs in the south who have more revenue.

“But it’s a successful measure of where Celtic are at. It’s not a Celtic team from years ago that automatically qualified after winning the league. You really, really have to earn it and it’s all relative.”

Celtic could finish the Premiership job at a ground where they started it in August, with the 2-1 win earned with a late goal by substitute debutant Scott Sinclair important for Rodgers in setting a tone. As were many moments across the campaign.

“In the opening games we had Hearts, Aberdeen and Rangers. It was a stiff test for us in what was a formation phase for us. It was immense focus from the players who have never once slipped off their concentration.

“They have never once had a lazy day. Normally with players they want an excuse. No matter what it is there will always be excuses. These boys have never ever looked for one. When you win it helps but they feel self-improvement.

“It is rare. I tend to like to work with players who still want to improve, no matter whether it is youth players or senior players. They have an honest approach to their work. There are no big-time Charlies. They are a champion because they can walk the walk and talk the talk at the same time. I have worked with many players like that but this is a real special group we have fostered here.

“There’s been lots of moments in lots of games when I feel the players now tactically understand the game. They understand the style we’re looking for and then it’s about consistency. When the question has been asked, they’ve answered it. That’s what makes me proud. You look at going into the League Cup final having lost in a Champions League game against Barcelona where you run as much as you’ll ever run. They go in and play with quality and composure, and win.

“There have been lots of moments in the season where we’ve maybe dipped a little and recovered. That happens to the best teams.

“We started very quickly, some great games in the middle, some not so good and the idea is now to finish strong.” Celtic’s domestic strength has never been in doubt under Rodgers.
