Pedro Caixinha will watch Sunday’s Old Firm derby in person, Telegraph Sport understands, but the Ibrox board will let Rangers’ next manager decide whether or not to take charge of the players as they return to the scene of a 5-1 battering by Celtic six months ago. It is not known when Caixinha will arrive in Glasgow and the deal has yet to be finalised, but his move was confirmed by a tweet from his current employers, Al-Gharafa of Qatar, that they had reached agreement with Rangers. The club statement added that Ciaxinha’s desire to join Rangers “was stronger than our desire to keep him with us.” Former manager and striker Ally McCoist told the Telegraph on Thursday that neither he nor “98 per cent of Rangers supporters” knew anything about the 46-year-old Portuguese coach. Brendan Rodgers, the Celtic manager, expressed similar bafflement when Caixinha’s name was mentioned to him. “I have never heard of him,” Rodgers said. The Celtic manager was, however, entirely aware of sentiments expressed on the other side of Glasgow at the start of the current campaign to the effect that, on achieving promotion to the Scottish Premiership four years after their financial meltdown under Craig Whyte, Rangers saw themselves as credible title contenders. On the eve of the opening day of the season, the Rangers website proclaimed that “the chase for 55” was on – a reference to their previous 54 previous titles. Rodgers, who said he had not seen anything of Rangers recently, nevertheless noted that a win or draw for Celtic would banish even the phantasmagoric notion that the title could still technically end up on the other side of Glasgow, although he added the proceedings would retain their familiar edge despite the gulf between the sides. “I don’t think it matters if it’s zero points, one point or 33 points. You’re playing for pride, you’re defending the culture of your club,” he said. “We know that if we win the game, that eliminates Rangers out of it totally, but it doesn’t really matter. We want to continue with our focus in winning games and we’ll continue with that. “They obviously thought they could win the league. Let’s be clear that when I came up here - after the Scottish Cup semi-final game (when Rangers beat Celtic last year) and their promotion - all the propaganda before a ball was kicked was that before the end of the season they’d be going for 55. “So, they obviously had the genuine feeling that they could win the league, but we’ve just done our work, quietly prepared the team, the players’ development and improvement and it’s taken us to this point. There’s no more or less pride. It’s one that could put us clear of them and we move on.” Rodgers frequently speaks of his attention to detail and context but when it was suggested that he evidently felt that a good deal of bold talk emanated from Ibrox last summer he demurred, while simultaneously casting the media as Rangers propagandists. “Not so much,” he said. “I just think that was the message that was out there, from them and from you guys. It’s pretty clear that was the message but all you can do as a team is your own work and our players have been brilliant at that. “I wasn’t surprised that message was out there because I was new into it and I had no thought for it either way.” One may believe that or not, according to taste, likewise Rodgers’ assertion that he had little notion of Rangers’ progress or otherwise since their rout at Celtic Park on September 10. “I don’t know. I couldn’t really tell you,” he said. “I only know of the three games we have played, three really good games, and we have done really well. Where they are now, I don’t know. “I am actually going to analyse them this afternoon. I know their results and I know they had a good result against Hamilton and won late on against St Johnstone but I would have to be honest and say that I don’t know about any difference in them.” Of his own players’ advances since the 5-1 game, Rodgers was specific. “That was early September and we weren’t at the level then that we are now,” he said. “We can play virtually in any type of game. We have been dynamic and fast and scored goals, defended well, and when we’ve had to battle and fight we’ve done that and come through it. When we’ve played teams that sat off deep we’ve found a way to play around it and get a result. “When the spaces are there we have speed and power, so the dynamic in the team is good, and when we’re not playing at our best we can still find a way to get the result. The notion of the team is in a much better place and the team have confidence in how they’re working.” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2017/03/09/brendan-rodgers-taunts-rangers-words-says-doesnt-know-anything/

But if Celtic defeat their city rivals - for the fourth time in as many meetings - at home this weekend they will go 36 points clear with 10 games remaining. “They obviously thought they could win the league,” said Rodgers. “Let’s be clear that when I came up here - after the Scottish Cup semi-final game and their promotion - all the propaganda before a ball was kicked was that before the end of the season they’d be going for 55. “So they obviously had the genuine feeling that they could win the league. I suppose they could keep the cards for next season?
Gers fans message 55? It was NEVER on the cards – even if Rangers fans thought it was says Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers The Hoops gaffer took the Light Blues fans message on day one of the season as a serious, confident statement of intent
Spoiler: click to toggle By Robert Grieve IF it was a card display designed to grab everyone’s attention then it worked. Because Brendan Rodgers can still see it now. ‘Going for 55’ was the message sent out by Rangers fans at Ibrox on day one of the season. It was probably more an act of defiance against the club’s critics. But the Celtic boss took it as a serious, confident statement of intent. Seven months on and his side are 33 points clear of their big rivals going into the season’s third Old Firm clash at Parkhead on Sunday. Rodgers said: “They obviously thought they could win the league. “Let’s be clear that when I came up here, after the Scottish Cup semi-final and their promotion, all the propaganda before a ball was kicked was that before the end of the season they’d be going for 55. “So they obviously had a genuine feeling they could win the league. “But we’ve done our work, quietly prepared the team, looked at the players’ development and improvement and it’s taken us to this point.” Rodgers wasn’t trying to ridicule Rangers when he brought the topic up at yesterday’s press conference. However, he very clearly had a point he wanted to make. He added: “It was pretty clear that was the message from them. “All you can do as a team is your own work and our players have been brilliant at that. “I wasn’t surprised that message was out there because I was new into it and I had no thoughts about it either way.” Rodgers’ side were devastating in their last Parkhead win over Gers — the 5-1 rout back in September. But the Hoops boss reckons his team are even BETTER now. He said: “I think there’s been quite a bit of improvement — and more improvement still to come. That was early September and we weren’t at the level then that we are now. “The beauty of the team, and how it’s evolved and developed, is that if you see us now we can play virtually in any type of game. “We have been dynamic and fast and scored goals, defended well, and when we’ve had to battle and fight in some of the games, we’ve done that and come through it. “When we’ve played teams that sat deep we’ve found a way to play around it and get a result. When the spaces are there we have speed and power. So the dynamic in the team is good. “And when we’re not playing at our best we can still find a way to get the result. “The notion of the team and the idea of the team is in a much better place. They have confidence in how they’re working.” Rodgers knows Rangers caretaker boss Graeme Murty and expects the Ibrox Under-20s coach to cope with the occasion. He said with a smile: “I’m sure he’ll be looking forward to it. “When you’re working with young players and you get the chance to step up, of course it’s tough because of the focus around the job. “You’re maybe looking after it for someone else to come in, but for Graeme’s own development it will prove invaluable for him. “I had it for 15 years as a youth coach. I worked with kids from five years of age when I was helping them tie their laces. “I then progressed through to working with some of the biggest players in the world at Chelsea as a youth coach. “So 15 years of complete development, travelling the world, hundreds and hundreds of games as a youth coach. “That first game at Watford, I walked out at Vicarage Road, the curtains came back and the lights were shining on me — but NOTHING prepared me for that. “I felt as if I was totally prepared having worked with every age band and type of player. “But it’s just about experience and games under your belt. “For him, whatever the result, it’s going to be a really, really good experience because when you’re out there it sets a different responsibility. “He will have gained a wonderful experience in these last three weeks or so from doing that and it’s a sensible approach: Enjoy it. Work it. Feel the pressure, see what it’s like. “I always say when you become a manager it’s welcome to the land of no sleep, because it’s a different sport altogether. “But whatever happens for him he’ll go away and be a better coach for it. Take your time, there’s no rush.” Rodgers wants desperately to beat Rangers on Sunday as much as any Celtic supporter. But he showed after the last win at Ibrox he had empathy with the opposite side when he made a point of speaking to Barrie McKay after the final whistle. He added: “You know what these games mean and when you end up on the losing side it’s not so nice. “As much as I’m a Celtic manager and want us to win, I have empathy in that situation because I know sometimes it is me at the other end. “I was offering support because the kid had played well, and one or two of the other boys as well. “Before I went into my own lot to congratulate them, I was offering a bit of support because he did well.” https://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/sport/football/700307/55-it-was-never-on-the-cards-even-if-rangers-fans-thought-it-was-says-celtic-boss-brendan-rodgers/

Probably only an act of defiance?
I'd say at least 75% of them genuinely thought they were going to win the league.

As much as his comments gave me a giggle - like Chris Sutton, Brendan completely misses the point of the whole 'going for 55 chat'. This was nothing to do with a genuine feeling they were going to win the league or not. It was to give credence to the continuation story - that the entity in the Premier League had already won 54 - not that they were genuinely going for 55. It was a line which was steeped in insecurity rather than arrogance.

This was nothing to do with a genuine feeling they were going to win the league or not. It was to give credence to the continuation story - that the entity in the Premier League had already won 54 - not that they were genuinely going for 55. It was a line which was steeped in insecurity rather than arrogance. Nah, they believed it after the SF, the hacks believed it, their board believed it.
There wasn't a gap Timmy.

In Glasgow the Zombie fuds were giving it large from both angles Nick - Sutton maybe picked up on that vibe I don't know. Yeah there is no doubt they had their magic hats on but I still maintain that the whole reason behind the 'Going for 55' rubbish was about continuation. They might as well have held up a banner saying 'We are still Rangers'. Because that is what it boiled down to.
