Brendan Rodgers unfazed by 'ignorance' of Premiership critics

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/39156707

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has defended the standard of Scottish football as his unbeaten side close in on the Premiership title.

The leaders, who have won 26 of their 27 top-flight games, are 27 points clear of second-placed Aberdeen and require seven points to win the title.

Responding to criticism of Scottish football, Rodgers said: "It's ignorance really.

"The footballing world is more than the (English) Premier League."

Celtic's 4-0 victory at Inverness CT in midweek left them three games away from a sixth consecutive league title.
'Celtic is one of the biggest clubs in the world'

"With all due respect, it's a lack of knowledge of football," Rodgers said of criticism of Scotland's top flight.

"We all love to see the Premier League and I was part of it but football is global and Celtic is one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"But if your eyes are only on one league then of course you tend to ignore what's around that.

"It (Scottish Premiership) is not as prestigious as some of the other leagues and that's purely on the basis of finance. Financially, Scottish football doesn't have the same rewards or the same propaganda that surrounds some of the other leagues, but it's still a very very competitive league."

Celtic midfielder Nir Bitton echoed his manager's view and said the Premiership was a "competitive league".

"For us it is not as easy as it looks on the table. It's a very competitive league," said the Israel international.

Bitton, who featured in the win in the Highlands, believes critics of the Scottish Premiership are wide of the mark.

"I think every game is difficult and the other team are going to defend and try to get something out of the game," he said.

"A lot of people look at the table and think Celtic are far better team [than others] in the Scottish league and they have no competition. It's far from being true.

"I think you can see that players who have played in the Premier League like Joey Barton or Niko Kranjcar that came to Scotland and thought it was going to be easy.

"But no, it's not easy. It's a very competitive league, it's a very difficult league, it's very tough. Some places you go to play like Inverness on Wednesday night, believe me it's not easy."

Where's all this negativity towards Celtic came from all of a sudden anyway? It's rife at the minute from that lot down there.
Is it hatred? Is it a jealousy thing? I'm genuinely at a loss.

A lot of the criticism stems from ignorance as Brendan says, the English have many good qualities but many lack a sense of proportion or self evaluation that leads them to appear like the little Englander.
For others like Cundy it's just a job to spout garbage to stir up interest in his little radio show!
Despite all the hype it seems that the EPL is a one horse race again this season just like last
So not much interest there despite Pep and Kloppo and the rest

Fans of these nothing clubs financially riding on the coat-tails of actual historically successful English clubs know they that in their lifetime their team won't bring them as much joy and excitement as we have in this one season. Got to hurt.

All of a sudden?

The negativity towards us emanates from one generalised source.

Fans of professional clubs older than five years may have hated us in the past, but that was purely by [association]. That hatred has waned.

To stay on topic, I love that Rodgers and his team are still so motivated to win at this stage of the season, when the title is all but ours. I suspect he'll be with us through The Ten.

The extended interviews with key members of brendan's backroom team have been great. We have some real quality staff working behind the scenes, it's exciting.

No doubt talkSPORT will continue with this mantra, each one trying to get a response from BR.

Cundy crush Celtic gaffer Brendan Rodgers brands Jason Cundy IGNORANT as he puts talkSPORT radio host in his place
The Hoops boss claims the English critics' biggest problem is that they are obsessed with their own Premier League

That interview with Jack Nayler is superb. The attention to detail and consumate professionalism about the club is amazing to see.
The fact that it aired this week along with the Chris Davies interview seems like more than a coincidence? A message in there for players perhaps.
If BR has taken the time and effort to appoint his back room staff at this level of quality it suggests to me that he plans to be here for a good while yet.
Thanks for posting the vids.

I don't know what it was like under previous managers but we seem to have a very professional and comprehensive backroom setup now. Really good to see. Talk of money in football usually means transfer fees and player wages but you can see that money is being spent on squad welfare and support. Proper club.

He has some CV as well, Chelsea, PSG, Real Madrid, Celtic, we are just so professional in everything that we do at the moment, we are on a completely different level to anyone else and will only move further away

I notice when Bitton is asked about 'what is the difference between last season and this season', he's very wary of saying anything critical.

Must do a lot of media coaching so that players don't fall for this stuff, especially when there would really easy to say something positive about BR and have it implied as sticking the knife into RD (even if it was intended).
