Celtic return to the scene of their only blemish in this season’s domestic campaign on Wednesday when they travel to Inverness, where they were held to a 2-2 draw in September. If anything, the stumble may have had the effect of spurring the Hoops on to a sequence which was extended against Hamilton yesterday to 21 successive Scottish Premiership wins and 32 domestic fixtures unbeaten, but Brendan Rodgers disclosed that the slip in the Highlands still niggles.

“Every game that you’ll feel you can do better in, you’ll always look back at, and that was a game where [out] of all the domestic games we’d had, we gave it away late on,” said the Parkhead manager. “But the response has been brilliant.

“We’ve got another chance to go up there this week and look to get another three points. At that time they were in a good moment and we were on the back of a 7-0 defeat by Barcelona in the Champions League.

“We played very badly in the first half and, in the second half, we were brilliant and how we didn’t win the game is beyond me but now we’re in February having won 30 out of 31.”

Only 10 days after they were held in Inverness, Celtic drew again, but this time the outcome reflected well on Rodgers and his squad as Manchester City had to come from behind three times to leave the east end of Glasgow with a Champions League group stage point. Rodgers reflected on that performance – and the subsequent 1-1 draw between the sides in the Etihad – when City met AS Monaco in midweek.

“I watched the game,” said Rodgers. “I think we showed in that tournament that we grew as we went on, in every aspect. Tactically, we got better mentally.

“The first game with City, 3-3, was a brilliant game, a proper game of football and we showed the level we can go to in the future.

“In the game in Manchester, we showed a real level of confidence to get a 1-1 draw. City are an outstanding team. So are Monaco, as they showed. At that level there are no easy games.

“Even if teams change the team around, like Man City did in the last game with us, they have players against you who are fighting and all want to win. We played two really good games with City and that bodes well for confidence.

“Watching the games the other night you could see that this is where we would be if we had got out the group stage. It’s top level and the highest level of technical quality, mentality and speed. Yes, that’s the level we will get to.”

In terms of Celtic’s pre-season preparatory programme, Rodgers confirmed that the temptation to play lucrative friendlies in the United States will be resisted. “We’ll be in Europe, not too far and we’ll be back mid-June,” he said.

“There are no glamour games planned. Celtic could go to Boston, I went there with Liverpool and head a great pre-season but you can’t really do it when you’ve got such important games three weeks into the season.

“So you just have to do your work here then get away for 10 days and work hard, bond and get some good games.”

Celtic will contest their 15th away game on Scottish soil this season when they visit Inverness on Wednesday. It is remarkable that Brendan Rodgers’ only other trip to the Highlands stands alone. A one in 14 because the 2-2 draw in September at the Caledonian Stadium marks the only occasion his team have not been victorious on their travels round the country.

A late equaliser from Richie Foran’s men denied Celtic the win that their second-half dominance seemed set to earn them. It is tempting to believe that the perfectionist Rodgers might still be irked by the one blemish in a 32-game domestic campaign, but he is more philosophical than that.

“We will lose a game, for sure. What we have to do is just resist as much as we possibly can. Perform how we want to and if we do that then we can’t do any more,” he said. “Every game that you’ll feel you can do better in you’ll always look back at and [in Inverness] that was a game, where of all the domestic games we’d had, we gave it away late on.

“But the response has been brilliant. We’ve got another chance to go up there this week and look to get another three points. At that time they were in a good moment and we were on the back of a 7-0 defeat [in Barcelona]. We played very bad in the first half and in the second half we were brilliant and how we didn’t win the game is beyond me. But we had an incredible reaction and now we’re in February having won 31 out of 32.

“[The players have] been remarkable in relation to their consistency and concentration. To sit here with the record they’ve had [for an unbeaten domestic start to a post-war season]. You’ve seen in the league how difficult it is to win games, no matter how well you’ve been playing because the next opponent is always a tough game.

“Even more so with the comfort we’ve had in points, that’s maybe the time you could slip up. But it’s never been the case, we’ve been very focused and we’re a very ambitious group to do well. It’s not just for this season, we’re preparing and developing something for a number of years. The focus has been great. Even the best teams can just drop off in any game and [have] something go against them but most of these players have shown a remarkable level of consistency and hunger on a day-to-day basis. How we manage pressure situations, how we cope with them, in terms of that they are working very well. The one thing you can’t control is things that happen outside of that. For us we just try and prepare as well as we possibly can.”

Celtic may have taken six goals off Inverness in the Scottish Cup three weeks ago, but then Rodgers acknowledged Foran’s team were in a difficult place. The win over Rangers on Friday, which followed a draw at Tynecastle, has put them in a different place, with the Highland club moving off the bottom of the Premiership table.

“They had a great response, on the back of losing six goals naturally a team tightens up. No matter how good you are, you have to defend and in their next games they’ve had very good results and our youngster who is on loan, Jamie McCart, has played very well. They’ll take comfort from the fact they’ve shown they can do it and they can be a tough team to play against.”

Brendan Rodgers explained his substitution of Moussa Dembele, explaining it was more important to reintroduce Leigh Griffiths to competitive action than afford the Frenchman a shot at claiming another Celtic hat-trick.

Dembele's double against Hamilton was responsible for earning his team a 21st straight Premiership victory, but he was taken off shortly after netting his second from the penalty spot to allow Griffiths only his second appearance of the year.

Griffiths has been struggling with a calf injury but Rodgers admitted it was important last season's top scorer is eased back into the fold.

'There is no individual bigger than the team,' said Rodgers. 'Moussa was outstanding today. The boy absolutely oozes quality and he could have got another hat-trick, but it doesn't matter.

'The idea was to give Leigh some minutes because you can't go with one striker. I need to have two firing and as fit as they can be.'

Celtic's efforts were hindered by an injury to James Forrest, who was forced off less than ten minutes into the match.

Rodgers has called for protection of his players in the wake of some strong challenges in recent weeks but apportioned no blame to Accies' Danny Redmond.

'We will see in the next couple of days,' said Rodgers of the winger. 'It was unfortunate but a really good challenge by the boy, it was strong, it was aggressive. I think James's second touch took it away from him a little bit so he was over-stretching.'

I never cease to be astonished at how "squad player" is thrown around as an insult. We need a squad, FFS! McGinn is a good young player who, for my money, offers more than either McGregor or Henderson, and I like Liam. I also think he'd offer more than Bitton, who maybe has more talent but doesn't apply it as often as he should. Having said that, you'd expect Ebouie to be Nir's replacement.

I think Brendan maybe sees McGinn as Broonie's natural replacement. We'll see.
On this, I agree in that he offers more than McGregor. I dont think mcgregor will improve any more - I think mcginn has levels to go still.

But, I think Henderson is a star in the making. There's been games recently where he's came on and changed them. His passing into the channels from MF is excellent.
You're not watching the same football as me!
Mental talk.

Yeah this'll be an interesting one I think. Davies seems like a really switched on and important figure at the club now.

Celtic scored one of the goals of the season at St Johnstone when every player on the pitch got a touch, Mikael Lustig performed a rabona, Callum McGregor a backheel and Moussa Dembele a finish.

It was a goal straight from the training ground but Hoops No.2 Chris Davies revealed there was much more to it than just passing drills.

It came from being a 24-hour player dedicated to the game and determined to make the most of themselves every day.

Earlier we revealed the dressing-room discontent bubbling under at Liverpool due to Jurgen Klopp demanding after-dark sessions.

There’s no such evening training at Celtic under Klopp’s Kop predecessor Brendan Rodgers.

Here Davies talks us through a Lennoxtown session...

9.00am

“Training is set to start at 10.30am on the dot but the players will usually come in an hour an a half before that, at least an hour, that’s an actual condition.

“There’s preparation to do. That’s one of the biggest aspects for young players to think about.

“There’s a huge amount of importance about the preparation and recovery – not just what goes into the session. A massive part is eating the right foods.

“Then we look at prehab. Rehab is when they are recovering from injury. Prehab is about preventing injury. They do stretches and exercises in the gym before training, some will have massages.”

10.30am

“Training is 60-90 minutes at high intensity. It’s crucial when you are out there you don’t stop.

“There’s no standing around talking. Information comes across short and sharp then it’s back to work. They need to work really hard.

“You look at work with and without the ball. If it’s an exercise relating to press then we expect the players to work at a maximum physical capacity.

“We dictate the space. It can be a big area with lots of running or a smaller space when it’s 100 per cent intensity.

“The key is to make it game-like – they need to train the way they play. The pace of the running, the ball speed, everything you expect to see at the weekend.”

Noon

“Some might have specific work to do with me or John Kennedy. That might be receiving, dribbling. After that it’s all about recovery and preparation for the games.

“Recovery is a massive part of professionalism. The manager has spoken about having that professional attitude. It’s about the gym, it’s about eating properly and it’s also about rest.”

Good news imo.
I actually think RD had the right idea but doing preseason at home.

I don't mind 10 days in Central Europe if the friendly matches are all played locally to the team's base but we seem to lose hours and hours to bus and plane journeys at a time when every morning and afternoon session counts.

I get that a hotel means that it's a bit easier to get players doing double session and control diet and rest periods a little more but I'd really like to avoid the team traipsing around for four of the ten days we're away
