BRENDAN RODGERS insists Celtic want a derby victory just as much as Rangers — even though they are already 16 points clear of their bitter rivals.

The Hoops gaffer takes his side to Ibrox for the first time since succeeding Ronny Deila in the summer.

Celtic have won both Old Firm derbies so far this season, including a 5-1 Premiership rout at Parkhead in September.

Gers’ 1-1 draw at St Johnstone earlier this week means boss Mark Warburton is under even more pressure to prevent Rodgers’ men from further extending their lead.

But the Celts gaffer — who saw Moussa Dembele hit a late winner when the sides last met in the Betfred Cup semi in October — refuses to accept Gers’ players will have a greater appetite for victory.

Rodgers, who has led the champions to a 23-game run without defeat, said: “We have to perform. It’s not about the 16-point lead.

“We have shown over the course of the season so far that we don’t need to have any propaganda.

“We have a pride and we are representing our supporters and, in derby games, it’s everything for them. We respect that.

“Every game is intense, it doesn’t matter what the points difference is. You are fighting for your shirt.

“One thing I said to the players when I came here was that they’re defending the culture of the club.

“That is in every single game — not just a Celtic v Rangers game.

“You have a duty to defend the great culture of this club. Whether you are 16 points, possibly 19, in front, it doesn’t matter. We have to fight.”

Rodgers also believes Celtic have NOTHING to prove at Ibrox.

He added: “For us, away from home, we have been averaging three goals per game in the league.

“We have played some brilliant football and we’ve shown that we can fight.

“These December games were when we used our squad, but we showed we can be resilient and that we have persistence and quality. Whatever the game asks for, we showed that we can perform.”

Giving Ronny the credit he is due is another touch of class. It's simple, Brendan is just a good guy.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
Do you think they are physical? I`ll give Garner being dirty but the two games I`ve seen them play this month they were pretty limp.
I don't, was wondering why the media thought that though, maybe a warning to us as to what the ref is ready to let them away with.

They have Halliday as well, he's a bit of a hard man.

:lmao:
As hard as a number 2 after a Lamb Madras with garlic nan washed down by 10 pints of Tennents :arrr:

Did he go mental celebrating the Sinclair goal? Seemed to be nursing a bit of a knock at the end.

What a guy, and what a transformation of our club under his watch

A world class manger, who's qualities have rubbed off on the team. Imagine the damage we'll do after a couple of more transfer windows.

Really all I require from a manager is some one who is so happy who when we score against the Huns injures himself with happiness. What a guy

19 points ahead with a game in hand.

Brendan's final line in post-match interview:

"We'll do a lot of work over the course of the off period, and hopefully come back and be better in the second part of the season"

I don't think we are going to lift our instep off of their throat any time soon.
