Brendan has said the squad size needs to come down. In January we must shift players like Boyata, Ambrose, Cifit and GMS. Free up some wages to get in a couple of quality additions. BR can take this team places. This is only the beginning.

Andy Walker on SSN, starts off surprisingly positive, a lot learned from the CL, learning curve for the young players etc then ruins it by saying that it's massive for Rodgers too if he wants to back to England in 2 or 3 seasons.

Very clever and brave v city at home
Not clever and not brave tonight
Barcelona are far better than Man City though. Hard to criticise Rodgers tonight. He played the cards he had reasonably well, trying to squeeze the middle and force Barcelona wide, but our weaknesses were cruelly exposed, and most of them are in our midfield.
listened to the by the min podcast before the match and the considered view was the BR has already developed a wee habit of trying something different in big matches (obv not including kilmarnock)

and again last night i don't think anyone would have thought playing mcgregor rogic and armstrong against a stronger side than city would have delivered indeed everyone i know thought only one of them (excluding mcregor) would/should play

not saying bitton would have worked his arse off or that forrest would have been effective but those two plus one of rogic/ armstrong would have on basis of all we've seen to date been the best team we could have fielded rather than the most innovative

have we ever played that midfield before?? and if not why are we trying it out against the most difficult opponent and when europe after christmas was on the line

CELTIC are putting together an ambitious loan deal for Everton midfielder James McCarthy, who they want to sign in the January transfer window.

Herald Sport understands that Brendan Rodgers, manager of the Scottish champions, wants to bring the 26-year-old to Glasgow in a deal which would initially base the Republic of Ireland internationalist at Celtic Park for the remainder of this season.

We can reveal that a permanent move could be secured next summer if Celtic, Everton and McCarthy himself can agree terms, however, the situation is also being monitored by Newcastle United, Sunderland and Stoke City who are also interested in the former Hamilton Academical player.

Everton’s owners remain reluctant to sell the Glaswegian; however, McCarthy does not figure in the plans of manager Ronald Koeman, having played just two league games this season, and is desperate to get back playing regularly.

The Merseyside club would have to pay the majority of the former Wigan star’s wages, believed to be close to £70,000 a week, which means if Celtic want to push through the move they would have to pay a loan fee, but with the £30m-plus the club will make out of their Champions League campaign they are in a strong financial position.

And there could be an added cash bonus as Liverpool are reportedly ready to make a £30m bid for former defender Virgil van Dijk as the Parkhead club are due 15 per cent of the fee Southampton would receive if such a deal was to take place.

Crystal Palace midfielder Jordan Mutch remains a target and Darlington Nagbe of MLS outfit Portland Timbers has visited the club and is expected to sign when the window opens for a fee of close to £2m.

However, a successful chase of McCarthy would be seen by supporters as another big marker set down by the club in terms of the level of player they can attract.

McCarthy established himself as a much-admired Premier League performer when he joined Wigan in 2009, and won the FA Cup before clinching his move to Everton, who beat a number of clubs to sign him for £12m.

Up until this season, after Koeman took over from Robert Martinez, McCarthy has been a first-team regular, but it is clear he doesn’t fit into the Dutchman’s system at present.

‘Scotty, we will give to the very last moment,’ said the Celtic manager.

‘He obviously took a knock and it was serious enough for him to come off, so we need to wait to the very end on that.

‘He would be a big miss. He has come up here and has done what I expected him to do in terms of his quality. He has big quality, he works hard, is very robust and mentally strong, and has obviously been a very important member of our team.

‘The key thing for us, and it’s probably worth reiterating, is that we have always been about the collective.

'The team is functioning very well and Scott has been a big part of that, and if he doesn’t make it then we have really good players who can come in and will be hungry to help the team win the trophy. We will give him every chance and see where he is on Sunday.’

Rodgers, who also has Leigh Griffiths fit for the final, says improving players will always be the yardstick by which he judges himself – not the number of trophies he wins.

He hopes to land what would be the Parkhead club’s 100th major honour by seeing off the Dons.

But, as pleasing as that would be, the Irishman is adamant that the long-term development of players will always be something he prizes above silverware.

‘I’ve been asked if it’s about me winning my first trophy. It’s really isn’t,’ he said. ‘When I first set out in coaching it was about improving teams individually and collectively.

‘When I look beyond my career, what will define me as a coach personally will be about improving players.

‘When I’m hobbling about with a walking stick I’d hope to look back and players will know I’ve done my best for them.

‘My ambition is always for the club to win trophies as a result of me being here. I’m not taking anything away from it, but what it means to me personally is zero. Managers get judged on what they have won, but it’s no drama to me. People can write and speak about it, but for me it means nothing.’

Away from the cup final, Rodgers has backed Malky Mackay to be the SFA’s next performance director.

The pair worked together at Watford and the Celtic manager feels Mackay has the ideal skill set for the post.

‘When I got my first manager’s job at Watford, Malky was in for it as well,’ he recalled.

‘I was working at Chelsea at the time and was offered it. I think most people thought he would then be moved on but I’d done my homework on him and knew he was a good man and was keen to learn.

'He’d not that long stopped playing so I kept him and in my short period of time there he was a very loyal assistant for me.

‘I know him well enough. When I was at Swansea as manager I was asked about him being Cardiff manager and I spoke well of him there as well in terms of what I thought he could do for Cardiff.

‘Obviously the last two or three years have been difficult for him but in terms of skill set and qualities I’m not sure there is anyone better.’
