I see Jonathan Wilson has an article in The Guardian today which credits Brendan with popularising the 3-4-2-1 formation around Europe.

HE’S one of Brendan Rodgers’ biggest fans. He’s also a great admirer of Mark Warburton. From his Bournemouth base Eddie Howe takes a keen interest in the fortunes of the Old Firm, at least whenever there’s a spare moment to glance north of the border amid his devotion to ensuring the smallest club in the EPL stays among the giants. An act of tremendous generosity by Rodgers while Howe was at a pivotal juncture as a young manager will never be forgotten. Neither will a head to head with Warburton in the English Championship which left a huge impression. Howe told me: “I’ve got so much respect for Brendan. He was someone who simply gave me time at an early period in my managerial career — and I’ll never forget that. “He was at Swansea and I was at Burnley. I spent a couple of days with him and he was absolutely brilliant. “I was delighted to see him appointed at Celtic, taking a challenge on that he wanted. “I think he’s an outstanding manager and the job he did at Liverpool shouldn’t be underestimated. “I think Brendan’s already taking Celtic to another level. Spoiler: click to toggle
“I spoke to him in the summer about players and various things.
“Brendan didn’t owe me anything when he invited me to Swansea.
“So the time he provided, after I phoned him, was the most impressive thing.
“I spent an afternoon with him talking about life and football. It was brilliant.
“I’m now wanting Celtic to do well under Brendan — but you want to see good people do well.”
On Gers boss Warbs, Howe said: “We beat Mark’s Brentford in the Championship and they beat us.
“It’s very rare when you leave a game and think ‘Wow, they’re a good team and he’s a good manager’. But that’s what I felt.
“After that I studied Brentford closely and Mark.
“From that point I definitely earmarked him as a manager who would be successful in the future.”
I have a personal connection with Howe going back almost 25 years. He was in the Cherries youth set-up while I was covering the first teams led by Harry Redknapp, Tony Pulis and Mel Machin for the local paper.
We’d see each other occasionally at the club’s previously-ramshackled Dean Court ground, since entirely rebuilt on the same Kings Park site and now a gleaming but modestly-sized stadium.
My flying visit to Bournemouth last week was the first time we’d greeted each other since those formative days for both of our careers.
Howe made it through the ranks and but for a cruel knee injury in his second game for Redknapp’s Portsmouth in 2002 after a £400,000 move along the coast he could well have gone right to the top.
He was only 24 when a surgeon delivered the devastating verdict that he’d have to retire. Howe, though, sought a second opinion from the Colorado-based Dr Richard Steadman — the specialist who once looked after Celtic’s John Kennedy — and his response was positive although also realistic about the level he could continue at.
Nevertheless, he still got another five years as a player – largely due also to the fact the fans of cash-strapped Bournemouth amazingly clubbed together a reputed £21,000 to bring him back from Pompey, a fund-raising scheme dubbed ‘Eddieshare.’
It would be the understatement of the century to state he’s since repaid the supporters. It was while the club’s centre of excellence chief in 2008, and at a New Year’s Eve party at the home of former Scotland star Richard Hughes, that Howe took a phone call which dramatically changed the course of his life.
Jimmy Quinn hadn’t long been sacked as boss and Howe recalled: “It was from Adam Murray, one of the club’s main decision-makers — and he basically offered me the caretaker manager’s job.
“I was stunned, I thought it was a joke. It was a crackly line and I was initially finding it hard to take seriously what had been said.
“But sure enough, it was for real — and I couldn’t turn it down.”
What Howe has achieved with Cherries, either side of a relatively brief stint at Burnley, has been nothing short of phenomenal — with many well-respected pundits down south rating him as a future manager of Arsenal and even England.
The aforementioned Hughes — five Scots caps and an ex-Cherries star — is now his head of recruitment while the club’s major shareholder, Russian businessman Maxim Demin, sanctioned multi-million pound signings to get to the top flight and stay there.
Yet just eight short years ago every penny was a prisoner for Howe and Bournemouth. Now one of the most talked-about young managers in European football, he opened up on the moments that have moulded him as a person and manager.
He said: “The big turning points in my life come from developing a love of football, being one of four boys in a family with little money.
“Our days were spent in the park, four lads kicking a ball around, with a mum and sister.
“My mum worked ever so hard to provide for us all. She really was a special person and a massive inspiration. Still is.
“She was my role model and losing her four years ago was so hard. There isn’t a day when I don’t think about her.
“I never want to let her down. We moved from Amersham to Bournemouth where I first started to play football competitively.
“Never having the feeling of being good enough to be a professional footballer was also something that drove me on.
“My talent was limited — so I made a career out of hard graft and practice.
That attitude has stayed with me throughout my managerial career and it will never go away, that feeling of continually looking to prove myself.
“Retiring early through injury also had a huge impact in my life. I never achieved anything tangible as a player and that was a deep disappointment.
“That has motivated me.
“Although enjoyable, my playing career wasn’t exactly full of highs.
“A lot of setbacks, a lot of injuries, a lot of disappointments, a lot of rejection.
“So that need to fight, to prove people wrong, to battle the odds, lives with me now as a manager.
“I could never be big time or ever get ahead of where I am.
“That’s because of my humble beginnings.”

Eddie on Artur Boruc
“WE expect the goalkeeper to be able to contribute with possession play, to be able to use the ball well. Our football’s well known here.
“I would give Artur the huge compliment of saying he’s proved one of my best ever signings.
“He was a free transfer and I must admit at the time I felt I was taking a risk. I didn’t know him and was also aware of talk about so-called baggage that came with him. However, I knew him as a goalkeeper and I’d watched him at Celtic and other clubs. That told me he had outstanding ability.
“Artur was one of the key reasons we got promoted from the Championship to the Premier League.
“He made our back four complete — and that’s no disrespect to any other goalkeepers we had. He was just a level above.”

Bring Boruc home!
Brendan seems to have given a lot of time to a lot of young managers, which just makes you love him even more. I think me and him would be best mates.
