The club could be pushing a £100m turnover this season. It would be nice to see them loosen the purse strings a bit in January, but I can't see it.
I think he said the other day that January is more important than the summer. It'll allow them to be part of the team for the CL qualifiers.

HE’S a manager who wants to grab Europe’s attention.

But first Brendan Rodgers has had to make his own players sit up and take notice and believe in what he’s saying.

One away win and a draw in 25 fixtures. Four years since they last tasted victory on the continent.

Celtic’s on-the-road results and performances in Europe have been like a monkey on their back in recent years.

And Rodgers can’t help think those stats have been preying on the minds of the players with each passing game.

But the Parkhead manager wants to change that, and hopes Tuesday night’s well-earned draw against German side Borussia Monchengladbach is the start.

He said: “That’s my job over time, to give them that belief.

“Our way of playing, the model we are trying to create, will give them that confidence.

“Domestically we have aggression in our game, attacking intent in our game. Now it’s a case of rolling that out in European football.

“It’s never easy playing against a different quality of player in a faster game. But you see the improvement.

“We had a great performance against Manchester City at home and we should have won the game.

“And in Germany I felt we were the better team.

“It’s a huge credit to the players that they have the belief to go and do that. But when you have a record of, what was it, one win and a draw in 25 games at this level away from home? Of course, it can play on your mind a bit.

“It’s step by step. We need to create a playing style here and an identity that is going to allow us to have that confidence.

“I think that’s underway now and Monchengladbach was another example of the players adapting to the methods.

“I’m disappointed they didn’t win, but I think they take huge satisfaction from going to a stadium like that against a top-class team and playing that well.

“We should have taken three points instead of one. So it’s a big night for us in terms of what we are trying to do and the development of the team.”

Celtic are now unlikely to reach the last 16 of the Champions League this season, with the odds very much stacked against them.

But if they could finish third in Group C and get into the Europa League then it would go down as sensational work by Rodgers and his men.

And the gradual improvement Rodgers is seeing in his team week by week is hugely encouraging for him.

He added: “For us, it’s very important in what we are trying to build.

“We are trying to create a team that can come to Europe and be a real threat both away from home and at home, with composure and bravery on the ball.

“I said to them afterwards that it’s much better to play like that than to camp in and defend for what seemed like two days.

“I want my teams to have the confidence and belief to dominate, to create chances and play with aggression. We did that in Germany.

“The likes of Scott Brown was outstanding, Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic were very good in there, and the front players were a threat.

“We should have won the game, but it’s a really positive night in terms of Scottish football and, in particular, Celtic.

“We’ve played against two top sides in these last three games and were the better team twice. We were second best against Gladbach at home, but we showed a marvellous response to that.

“For a lot of these players, it’s new to come away and create opportunities. It’s good to see and hopefully we can continue to build.

“The competition for us this year was really about improvement and I think you can see it from the last game. I think it’s another huge step for them. That was my message back at the hotel before we went to the stadium.

“Before this we had played three games at this level and in one of the games we were very, very good. The last game was not so good.

“Then what we saw in Germany was a personality in the team. To play well and have positive results at this level you have to believe you can do it.

“They have shown domestically they are improving all the time and the beauty of that is they will get better.

“But at this level the game is much quicker. You have to think quicker, you have to move quicker. Tactically, you have to be very good.

“Obviously those first few games against some top sides have been a real test for us. But I think you saw the confidence and ability to build the game from behind.

“They were calm, they got in good positions. They can take the ball under pressure, pass the ball and move off the ball and it’s a much more enjoyable game when you play.

“And when you haven’t got the ball, the basic mission is to recover it as quick as you can.

“In Monchengladbach what they did very well was press the game at the right times and forced them into mistakes. And when they had to drop in, they showed good organisation to then defend and hit on the counter.

“When you perform like that away from home, it can give you huge confidence.

“It sends us into our final games in the competition with great motivation to get results and that’s what we will look to do.”

Brendan Rodgers insists Celtic's display in Monchengladbach has laid down a Champions League marker.

The Parkhead boss has set his players the target of becoming consistent challengers for the last 16 within three or four years.

And the process began when a depressing run of group-stage defeats away from home finally ended with a 1-1 draw in Germany.

Scotland's champions still face an uphill battle to secure European football after Christmas.

However, insisting his side deserved to win after Moussa Dembele cancelled out Lars Stindl's first-half opener, Rodgers said: 'For us, Germany was very important in what we are trying to build and create.

'We are trying to create a team that can come to Europe and be a real threat both away and at home, with a composure and bravery on the ball.

'I said to the players afterwards that it's much better to play like that than to camp in and defend for what seemed like two days.

'I want my teams to have the confidence and belief to dominate, to create chances and play with aggression.

'We did that there. The likes of Scott Brown were outstanding, Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic were very good in there, and the front players were a threat.

'We should have won the game, but it's a really positive night in terms of Scottish football and, in particular, Celtic.'

Callum McGregor failed to convert an 86th-minute chance to secure Celtic's first group stage away win in four years after defender Julian Korb's red card reduced the hosts to ten men.

Yet a measure of Celtic's progress can be gauged from the fact they left a Bundesliga arena mildly disappointed they didn't win.

'I think it's another huge step for them,' added Rodgers.

'What we saw in Germany was a personality in the team.

'To play well and have positive results at this level you have to believe you can do it.

'They have shown domestically they are improving all the time – and the beauty of them is they will get better.

'But at this level the game is much quicker. You have to think quicker, move quicker.

'Tactically you have to be very good.

'In Monchengladbach what they did very well was press the game at the right times and force them into mistakes.

'And when they had to drop in they showed good organisation to then defend and hit on the counter.

'So, when you perform like that away from home, it can give you huge confidence.

'It sends us into our final games in the competition with great motivation to get results and that's what we'll look to do.'

Just two points now separate Celtic from third-placed Monchengladbach. Defeat in Germany might have signalled the end of any realistic hope of claiming even third place in Group C and Europa League football in the New Year.

With Barcelona and Man City up next in their final two games, expectations remain grounded for this season at least.

Working hard to convince his players they *can* compete at Champions League level, however, Rodgers insisted: 'That's my job over time, to give them that belief.

'Domestically we have aggression and attacking intent in our game.

'And now it's a case of rolling that out in European football.

'It's never easy playing against a different quality of player in a faster game. But you see the improvement.

'When you have a record of – what was it? – one win and a draw in 25 games at this level away from home then, of course, it can play on your mind a bit.

'But it's step by step. We need to create a playing style here and an identity that's going to allow us to have that confidence.

'I think that's under way now and Monchengladbach was another example of the players adapting to the methods.

'It's a big night for us in terms of what we're trying to do.'

...and always talking positively about times ahead; how he wants his players to adapt to what's required and giving them confidence in their ability to achieve. All that plus giving the media no wriggle room with his sharp as a tack football brain and love of the club.

Still pinching myself at where we are in comparison to 6 months ago.

A MF in the John McGinn mould, CB like Gary Kenneth and a Jim Hamilton sort of striker and I'd class the january window a success.

Mind that volley Jim Hamilton scored against us? Up there with Zidane's against Bayer Leverkusen.

Somebody did a rough number-crunch on this forum and came to the total of £94m. The Champions League revenue is looking at least £30m+ this season, so it could be revised.
