BRENDAN RODGERS claims Celtic hold a huge psychological advantage over Rangers ahead of tomorrow’s League Cup semi-final.

Celts humiliated their Old Firm rivals in a 5-1 demolition last month.

And Hoops manager Rodgers reckons the manner of victory in the first league meeting between the sides in four years will give his side the edge.

He said: “We’ll focus on it being another game, but when you play as well as we did in that game, it helps psychologically. When you’ve scored five and you could have had more and you play like we did, you know you can beat the team well.

“It doesn’t necessarily make it any easier, but you know you’ve done it.

“But it’s a different game, a semi-final. We know if we play as well again we’ll have a great chance of getting to the final.

“Each win against a rival builds confidence.

“Having watched and read reports, I know how tough these games can be to play in, but I think the level of our game and the quality of our game was high that day.

“When you perform like that, psychologically it gives you big confidence. But we only made that victory because of the hard work we put in and that can’t let up at the weekend.”

Leigh Griffiths has begged Rodgers for a start, insisting he and Moussa Dembele, who netted a hat-trick in that 5-1 win, could run riot against Gers at Hampden.

But last night the Hoops gaffer effectively ended the striker’s hopes. It seems certain he’ll go with the same starting XI that dismantled Gers at Celtic Park last month. Rodgers said: “We’ll see. I’ll sit down with the coaching staff. If it was as simple as that it would be all right, wouldn’t it?

“To play with two players up front you need to have a certain dynamic behind that, but you also need certain physical qualities in order to cope with that.

“But yeah, they’re both talented players and we will see what the game needs.

“The issue with that is we don’t have certain physical qualities in order for that function to work as I would want it to work.

“So at times one can play through the middle and one can play off the side, but it doesn’t really work for us because they are both natural strikers.

“If you play a diamond you then need mobility and power in the middle of the field. So it’s not as easy as just putting in the players.

“We have other good players as well, Patrick Roberts, Ryan Christie and Stuart Armstrong.

“I will always pick the best team to win the game and sometimes that means some of the good players don’t always play.”

Rodgers has sympathy for Griffiths’ plight, paying tribute to his attitude in recent weeks.

The Celtic boss added: “I like the kid a lot, as a player and as a guy. His contribution last season and at the start of this one was very good.

“But it just so happens that one of Europe’s top young strikers has come into the team and done very well.

“It is tough, I have empathy, but I have empathy for all the players who aren’t playing because they are all working very hard.”

That was a Deila-esque performance from Rodgers last night.
Under Ronnie we didn't get to the stage where we were competing with BMG.

We were beaten by a better - and more expensive - side

The Brendan fella really is a class act, compare and contrast with Warburton, and there is a world of difference. He always engages with the journalist asking the question, makes eye contact and can quickly turn things to put them on the back foot, Warbs on the other hand looks everywhere except at the press, head moves from side to side and always looks uncomfortable. One is an experienced intelligent operator, the other is a complete amateur/ :clover:

Who else was he supposed to play in midfield, out of curiosity?
That's the problem. None of the alternatives are good enough. We failed to get the extra midfielder in transfer window.
This, as I've said before, is the reason for losing goals despite having good* defenders

*they are good - but the team isn't quite connected yet despite some excellent forwards and a clever midfielder

Great listening to them both.
Brown looks and sounds like he's in a much better place this season.

I think we'll horse them again.

Gerrard was in Liverpool last week and has been strongly linked with a return there in some sort of capacity. If he's leaving L.A, it will be to return to Liverpool surely.
