Curious decision to put McGregor on tonight after having been nowhere near a game for weeks. I also think the decision to mothball Toure since the Man City game worked against us, and I would expect Simunovic to play at the weekend. Might also be time to get Bitton out the side.

Agree with most of that. But thought McGregor did well when he came on and showed Bitton up a bit.

(Still positionally very questionable)

I think we saw how he would like us to play.

Time.

Exactly. There is a good article on the fishal site http://www.celticfc.net/news/11483.

I particularly liked this bit:

Quote:

While disappointed not to have given the Celtic supporters a win to celebrate, Brendan Rodgers highlighted that this is still the opening chapter of his long-term project in Paradise, acknowledging his team are still learning how to compete at this level.

and this

Quote:

“That’s the process, it won’t happen overnight," he said. "We have to find a way of performing consistently at this level, and there are certain attributes you need within the team in order to do that, and that’s something myself, the staff and the club know. You can’t click your fingers overnight and achieve something, we have to build towards it.

He doesn't want us to just punch above our weight as we have been known to do at times over the years. He wants us to compete.

The article mentioned the support tonight. Don't get me wrong, they were good at times but, where I was sitting certainly, there was too many people too quick to jump on the players anytime they misplaced a pass, it didn't seem to occur to them that maybe the Germans were just in the right place at the right time from their point of view. We have to aspire to play like that, not just in Scotland but in Europe and that is something that is going to take time.

I still think there are a few twists and turns in this group yet. The thing is, and Muzz summed it up on the post match thread when he said "tonight was our 3 point game", people were expecting us to be able to win tonight because we did the unexpected v Man City. It's fair enough since MGB are a pot 3 team so in theory the easiest of the three we would play but there are no easy games. After the Barca hiding folk had us finishing the group on 0 points. No one expected us to draw 3-3 with City. I always believe we'll win but even I was quite stunned with how we started that match! So all the games are "3 point games", that's what we should be aiming for, it isn't always going to work out but never say die should be the attitude and there are nine points still to play for.

Brendan commented the other day about his fascination with the pyschological as well as physical side of the game so I genuinely believe he may be the one to help us to make progress as far as playing away from home is concerned. :)

Had a poor night. Brown splitting the centre halves and playing 20 yards behind Bitton nullified them both and left a huge gap in our midfield. Putting McGregor on was a real WTF moment. Sinclair was atrocious yet wasn't hooked. We caused them no problems at all. He didn't do enough tonight to change that.

That failure to buy another midfielder in the transfer window has bitten us on the arse again. Cheers Peter.

Who else was he supposed to play in midfield, out of curiosity?

That's the problem. None of the alternatives are good enough. We failed to get the extra midfielder in transfer window.

I'm not disagreeing. I got a bit of a roasting on here on deadline day for saying Peter had sold us short in fact.

What I mean though is Bitton was clearly toiling badly. McGregor was the only possible replacement we had. I didn't think it was a particularly strange sub.

Apart from his first pass McGregor was decent when he came on and was 10 times the player that biton was.

Biton was awful and he could have put on anyone to make an improvement

Dont know how putting McGregor on was a WTF moment. Bitton needed hooked and Armstrong has looked very pedestrian domestically. I know McGregor has barely featured, and I'm nowhere near what you'd call a fan of his, but you know he at least brings a bit of nippiness and mobility around midfield. I agree with everything else.

Armstrong is never a central midfielder in a million years either. He's been played there enough to show that.

McGregor, Brown and Bitton are our only central midfielders. You could make a case for young players like Henderson or Ajer but they're clearly not ready yet. That position has actually regressed in quality from Deila's last season and that's just not acceptable.

Their formation allowed them to play short quick passes most of the night. Difficult night for the manager & players.

I hope he gets it right on sunday.

Given what Brendan inherited he's performed miracles with that squad so far.

He's rejuvinated players who were regressing under Deila and that's why we're so disappointed at last nights result - we are now expecting and demanding that we compete with clubs who operate on a completely different financial footing. And that's unfair.

As others have said we probably need another 2 summer windows before we can see what he's trying to achieve*. Until then, as long as I see some progress in Europe and dominance on the domestic front I'll remain delighted at his appointment.

* Back him Peter, you bastard.

Long term, that result suits BR.
Ironically, the only player who performed well was Craig Gordon. The rest were out of their depth with and without the ball.

He now has some leverage to push for a bit more, most likely next summer.

I was thinking before the game that it was harsh on Simunovic to drop him like that, but I can't deny that I'd have put the same starting lineup out Toure and all. I doubt there are many on here who wouldn't have done so either. As an aside, I'm a bit surprised that we haven't experimented more with playing 3 at the back since Jozo's return from injury.

Priority has to be buying a midfielder who can take Bitton's place.

I have every confidence in BR and the turnaround from last season has been remarkable. Last night was not his finest game tactically though.

That was a Deila-esque performance from Rodgers last night.
