His decision to go for more goals against Beer-Sheva rather than protect a 3-2 lead was fundamental in us even playing last night. To do it against Guardiola's Man City initially seemed like madness. It was then fully explained to me by the gent sitting next to me: "Yaaaaaas Brendan, effin' right intae them, get them pumped!"
 that man knows his stuff.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep
It was utter genius. Another striker on and force them to hold a few men back instead of having a man with Dembele and letting them come at us
Im going against the grain here, but while being fully supportive of the change when it was made, it actually cost us the midfield, which we were already losing after Rogic went off and invited them on to us. They had plenty of chances in the last few minutes that I dont think they would have got if we kept the extra body in midfield.
I think the substitutions highlight our overall weakness in the midfield area. This time next season, I'd expect the likes of Bitton to be coming off the bench to shore up the side rather than having to put on a striker to try and make them more defensive.

Agree completely. Its going over old ground, but the lack of a central midfielder was the only black mark on the last transfer window.

He gets it. This is what we wanted to see.

One other impressive thing - he recognized that his guy, DeVries, wasn't going to cut it and got Gordon back in goals. Another manager might have stuck doggedly with his man, "chest strain" notwithstanding.

I quite like the reckless abandon of his substitutions. As I said in the match thread he must be sitting reading commando comics in the dugout.
 Aye, that was a genuine WTF moment when he left Dembele on and brought in Griffiths. Still, I assumed he knew what he was doing. Which is a nice preconception to have about a Celtic manager again.
I did wonder at the time if the main reason for the introduction of Griffiths was not so much to score more goals but to provide a beleaguered defence and midfield an 'out' if they had to clear the ball, rather than just punting it upfield for City to regain possession.

I think it was to give their defence and midfield something to worry about and stop them moving forward at will

For me the reason to keep dembele on was that dembele was brilliant when back defending. Knowing we might concede free kicks in dodgy areas or corners, the big man was battering the heedies away. Meant griff would be our man up top as the out ball.

He's determined that the team is going to play to its attacking strengths and rely on those strengths to make up for the defensive deficiencies. Good. When that works, it will be tremendously entertaining. It just about came off last night and we were treated to a thrilling spectacle.
On the plus side, we're back in the running for post-Christmas European football and we might even be level on points with Manchester City at the halfway stage of the group if we beat the Germans and Barcelona keep winning. That in itself would be an astonishing achievement.
On the other hand, if the strategy comes unstuck, we may yet suffer some more postings. It's a high-stakes policy but I'm in favour of it for just now because the cautious, negative approach we've taken in Europe for too long has been dull, boring and, most of all, fairly ineffective. At last it looks like we're really going to have a go and I'll quite happily take whatever we get from trying that.
Exciting times lie ahead.
Agree with your points HC, however I would add a wee byline, we are going to get humped in Europe, no matter what. We simply dont have the resources. Therefor it boils down to a simple point, park the bus or go all in. I think we all prefer the later. :)
I agree. Last night was a success but it could just as easily have gone awry. If the first goal had been chalked off - and it usually would have been - we might not have got a foothold in the game, might have been a goal down after ten minutes and then been picked off on the counter at regular intervals as we tried to salvage something. It went well for us and we earned a good point but it really is about small margins and the percentages aren't in our favour over a run of games.

By the same token, if Dembélé had scored the penalty against Barca, we'd have been level after a quarter of the match, just as we were last night, and who's to say that we might not have found the confidence to tough it out afterwards? So it looks to me as if we're either going to get a good result by getting away with a brave but almost naive, cavalier approach or get totally schooled by teams who can clinically exploit our weaknesses. Sometimes it will be glorious, more often it will probably misfire but I'm happy to take the risk because I think we either take the whole package as it is or we don't. We've tried a few other packages lately and the current one is by far the most enjoyable.

Prior to signing up to Celtic, I didn't really rate Brendan.

After the start to the season, I had Brendan pegged as being well above anything domestically but yet to show any capability in Europe on a decent tactical basis. (formed on the Liverpool team he posessed and the Barca game)

Tonight I saw a Manager willing to do something tctically no-one in the famed EPL has the bollocks to do and on a fraction of the budget and that was to have us impose our domestic game on a superior oponent and play without the fear Deila crippled this team with.

When I saw Sutton sat in that box at full time smug as eff, I knew.

Brendan, I hope you stay for a very long time to create a legacy!!

An outstanding manager whose players are going through brick walls for him, who know their jobs and who are revitalised after a couple of years of stagnation.

To face Man City, one of the richest clubs going, with some of the best talent available to them, managed by a guy with the pedigree of Pep Guardiola, and get them out there playing to win from the word go, playing without fear, is an amazing achievement. To do so after the result in Barcelona only a matter of weeks ago is nothing short of incredible.

It's only a draw, but given those circumstances it ranks up there as one of the best performances in Europe by Celtic in the modern era. We showed we have bottle and no little skill.

We cut through them and had an end product. The first one was offside, but Erik's header was going in anyway. And as for the second, the move started with a kick-out from Gordon that was brought under control expertly by Dembele. We knocked it about until feeding it into Rogic, who was away after a nutmeg. Never mind it being an OG. If you put a dangerous ball into the box, these things can happen, and that was a dangerous ball after a lungbursting run, to complete a move that cut through them like a hot knife through butter. The third was was outstanding technique.

Celtic fully deserved the draw, playing high pressing, skillful, fast, attacking football and we should fear no one at home.

The team is superfit. The manager doesn't bang on about it. He's come in and got on with it and they're able to press and press and press, to the point where Man City booted the ball out for throw ins at least a dozen times, and their goalie was skating on thin ice with his passing.

To hear Steve McManaman talking about how English managers would be looking and learning from Celtic is something that I haven't heard about the team for a long time. And just as sweet was hearing the BT guy saying 'Man City kept pegging you back' at the end of the game. We had them on the ropes a few times, for long periods, and although we were hanging on at the end, we got there through heart and resilience.

Man City had to show a different aspect to their character, but Celtic had to show courage too. To lose the lead three times and never at any minute let the heads drop is testament to the belief that's been installed - in fact we were going straight up the park again and trying to get the lead back.

How this team will look with the midfielder that Brendan wants is going to be interesting. It's still going to be a tough ask in the next four games and we might still end up with only one point, but who knows where we go after the belief this gives us.

Would love to see the manager really getting backed for that midfielder he wants and the goalkeeper too (however I thought the midfield were outstanding tonight and Gordon made some fantastic saves - not least an instinctive stop in the dying seconds).

The great thing is that there's more to come. We have a fantastic blend of quality and experience, complemented by some of the best young talent in the country. We're in a good place under a good manager but, especially if we're still in Europe, we've got to trust the manager and get him what he says he needs to take us onto another level again.

Good summation NR.

Desmond was sitting beside PL last night - Hopefully PL was "telt" to continue to back Rodgers with what he asks for.
