BRENDAN RODGERS last night paid a warm and unexpected tribute to the work done by his predecessor at Celtic Ronnie Deila who the new manager believes left him a base which helped him reach the Champions League. The Norwegian, who failed twice to take the club to the group stages, would have been one of the last names on the minds of supporters when the final whistle went in Israel which meant the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Hapoel Be’er Sheva was a good enough result. Deila’s reign was tainted by his shortcomings in the competition, while Rodgers got through qualification at the first time of asking; however, the Northern Irishman was quick to heap what he believed was deserved praise on the man who came before him. “I would like to say thank you to Ronny,” said Rodgers. “Because I don’t get the chance to qualify for the Champions League if he doesn’t win the league – and he won the league last year. “So amongst the thanks I want to say a particular thank you to him and his staff because that gives me the chance to come into the club when he decided to move on and try to take the team forward. “They have made huge strides, but they will still be a way to go before they will be where I want them to be. “I think Tuesday night showed all the work they have been doing, the long hours, all the tactical work, all the psychological work in terms of getting that resistance to anything thrown at you. You get your rewards on the field and that’s where we want to see them.” Rodgers has added four players so far but only two of them, Kolo Toure and Erik Sviatchenko, began the match against Hapoel He has been forced to work with those who have not played well at this stage in the previous two years and, so far, has got the best out of most of them. “All I know is there were some good players and I have respect for other coaches and managers,” said the Celtic manager. “This is a huge job, a very, very tough job with the expectation of the club and where the club wants to be. With the riches now in football it’s very, very difficult. “We haven’t spent nearly anything at all but we needed certain types of personalities in here and add them to the boys here. It’s just to give them a different way of thinking and working and they have responded magnificently. It’s a pleasure to work with them and hopefully it’s only the start for them.” Rodgers now has the luxury of spending more money on more players given that the club is going to earn between £25m and £30 from the group stages, and that is on top of the transfer kitty he had anyway which he as he said he has hardly touched. The club are not now going to rip up their philosophy of working with certain limits; however, Tuesday night was a game-changer in terms of the calibre of player that could be lure to the east end of Glasgow in the immediate future. “There is a bit of work to do,” said Rodgers. “We’d obviously spoken about it (signing players) if qualification happens what it is we need, but the most important thing for Celtic is that it keeps improving what we have and keeping that momentum. “Our club has built great momentum in a short period of time and we have to keep moving forward. That’ll mean bringing players in who will improve us, but we have done an awful lot of great work in this market. “There is a bit of time to do some more and we’ll take some time over the next days to reflect on that and, hopefully, make some improvements.” Celtic at the moment may be good enough to qualify for the Champions League, which was far from a sure thing, but the performance in Israel confirmed what most supporters already knew and that is the squad remains short of experience and some class. However, Rodgers won’t be content with just being in the group stages and hoping to pick up a win here and there. He wants to get through to the last 16 just as Gordon Strachan and Neil Lennon did before him. “I think we have to refocus on our goals,” he said. “We want to come out of the group. We are not in it just to participate. In order to get out the group you have to get in it. So our first job, which was a massive job, was to qualify. It’s an amazing experience to have gone through it. “But now we are actually in it, it’s most probably going to be a difficult draw. We are in now with Europe’s elite. But we will be in it to try and qualify.” http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/football/14702658.Rodgers_thanks_Deila_for_building_foundations_of_Celtic__39_s_success/?ref=rss
Sinclair started and Erik was on the bench. Another great piece of SMSM journalism And Deila signed Sviatchenko.

Former Celtic assistant manager John Collins is hopeful that Brendan Rodgers receives money to spend on new players after his side secured qualification to the Champions League group stage. On a nervy night in Beersheba, Rodgers men barely held on to their aggregate lead after Hapoel Beer Sheva scored two either side of half time to provide a mighty scare to Celtic who won the first leg at home 5-2. Despite a poor performance, the path to the group stage of the Champions League was secured, and Collins, who served as assistant to Ronny Deila, believes Celtic will be mightily relieved to get back to the competition proper for the first time in three years. He admits that it is clear from last night’s showing that Celtic need strengthening to compete at Europe’s elite level, and is hopeful Rodgers receives the club’s backing in the final week of the window. The former Bhoy said on BBC Radio 5 live: “It’s a huge boost for everybody at the club, the supporters, the players and the coaching team. “Everybody is excited now, and the pressure is off as when you lose, I was their last season and the season before that, its doom and gloom. “It’s exciting now, and hopefully Brendan will be given more funds to go and strengthen the squad because from tonight’s viewing it’s clear they need another couple of players to compete in the group stage.” Rodgers is expected to splash the cash to further add options to his squad, and with Champions League football, Celtic are expected to become a more attractive destination in the final week of the window. http://www.insidefutbol.com/2016/08/24/now-back-brendan-rodgers-former-bhoy-wants-celtic-board-to-release-funds/301399/?

Brendan Rodgers has explained why he sent out a note to Celtic captain Scott Brown during the Champions League play-off against Hapoel Beer-Sheva. A place in the group stage was in serious danger of slipping through Celtic’s fingers in Israel when they trailed 2-0 just three minutes into the second half and were rocking badly. A couple of tactical changes by Rodgers eventually steadied the ship, including the introduction of Erik Sviatchenko in a switch to a back five for the closing stages. The Danish defender also passed a note from Rodgers to Brown. “It said: ‘Any danger?’,” joked Rodgers when asked what instructions he had relayed to Brown. “Seriously, it was just to make sure they understood the shape we were changing to. If you leave the message with a player, sometimes it doesn’t get on quick enough. “Scott’s a great communicator, so Erik gave it to him and he could see the shape of the team and what personnel had to go to what positions and what we were trying to achieve. “Rip it up quickly and go. I’ve done it in the past. It’s not a book! You have to be short, sharp and concise with your information. “Listen, the quality of your life is down to the quality of your communication skills. However you get it on there, however it is written, whether it is verbal, you need to get the message on there. “I thought we then found a calmness. The issue was that they were throwing caution to the wind and bombing everyone forward. “The problem was on the sides. Initially, they had a diamond in the first-half, but the tempo was up for them and we could contain that, so we switched from 4-3-3 to a diamond at the beginning of the half. “But they were still getting down the sides, so it was a case then of trying to block them. Stick an extra defender on meaning Kieran Tierney and Saidy Janko could engage their full-backs higher up the pitch. Then we started to deal with things.” http://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/teams/celtic/brendan-rodgers-explains-why-he-sent-on-note-for-scott-brown-1-4212027?

Dropped Ambrose from CL squad, selling Johansen, getting rid of Mulgrew and Stokes. Gets us into CL first time of asking with the shambles of a team that RD left us with and he's only spent what 4m quid?
He's even managed to re invigorate Forrest!
All in about what... 8 weeks.
Back the man. At this rate he will turn the Clyde into wine by Christmas.

HAVING parted company with Liverpool less than two seasons after almost leading the Anfield club to their first English title in 24 years, Brendan Rodgers appreciates just how quickly fortunes can fluctuate in football. So the Celtic manager is, with daunting games against Barcelona, Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League group stages looming, determined that his team savour getting there. The difficulties the Scottish champions will face taking on their Group C rivals are for another day. For the time being, he wants them simply to revel in their fine success. “You either walk on water or you’re the devil in this game,” said Rodgers yesterday as he looked back on the Parkhead club’s qualifying campaign and gave his opinion on the draw. “I never get too carried away or too disappointed. “But we achieved what we wanted to achieve. Qualification was extremely tough. After the intensity of the games and the level of healthy pressure that was on us, we can really enjoy it now. “It’s something we will reflect on over the course of the international break. I think it’s very important that the players can celebrate a milestone. “If you’re always running the race, you never get the feeling of going over the finish line. It can be tough. The players have created something here in the last five or six weeks that is clearly a milestone. “But they will celebrate that at the right time. After the game with Aberdeen we can sit back and reflect that we have achieved something important. Then we can re-focus on the next phase of our season.” Guiding Celtic out of a section that comprises Barcelona, Manchester City, two of the favourites to win the Champions League, and Monchengladbach and into the knockout rounds for only the fourth time in their history will be a huge achievement. Finishing third and securing a place in the last 32 of the Europa League will be far from a disgrace. Whatever happens, though, Rodgers is convinced that Celtic and Scotland will benefit from being involved in six games against such a high standard of opposition. The likes of James Forrest, Leigh Griffiths, Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney especially. “If you’re a young player then you will see facets of the game that maybe you wouldn’t see domestically playing in these games,” he said. “They will see the composure of the players, the technique of the players and tactically how they can participate in the game. If they want to be a top player then that’s important. “I was talking to Danny McGrain about it the other day. One of his first big learning experiences was when he played against a German team. The first game was away from home and the winger made a movement that he had never seen before and he got away from him. “So that made him think as a footballer. When he came back and thought about how he could deal with it, it made him a better player. So when you play against different styles, different cultures, different types of players, they will present to you different problems that you’ve got to find a solution to. Whether you come off second best or not, you will always learn from it. That makes you better and that’s what it’s about.” Celtic will have to halt a player that Rodgers knows all about when they take on Barcelona in their opening Group C game away from home on Tuesday, September 13 – the former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez – if they are to get a result. Yet, the prospect of his team coming up against the Uruguayan and the Catalan giants in the Nou Camp is one which excites him. “The reality is we probably won’t win it, (the Champions League)” he said. “So you want to ensure that the club, the players, the supporters, get the best experiences. For me, those experiences are against the top clubs. I know Celtic have played Barcelona umpteen times in the last 12 or 13 years, but it is still a great experience and one we will look forward to. It’s the elite cup competition in the world and Celtic are in it. We are only too happy to get these experiences. “Luis a top player and a great man. I also know how super-competitive he is. He will want to be working well and scoring goals. Listen, everybody recognises they’re the leading club over the last number of years. It is an extremely tough challenge for us. But it is experiences like that that we want.” The encounters with City, opponents Celtic have never faced before in a competitive fixture, will be more of a novelty for the Glasgow club. But with new manager Pep Guardiola having spent nearly £150 million strengthening a squad which was already laden with talent in the summer it certainly won’t be any easier. “It’s a tough game,” he said. “You see the investment in Manchester City and you have to be realistic. Their investment in terms of what they are building makes them one of the superpowers of world football now. “That’s the challenge for us; to try and find answers to all the undoubted problems they will give us and then make sure that we can give the opponent problems as well. I am looking forward to that." Rodgers predicted that Monchengladbach, who secured qualification to the group stages for the second consecutive season with a record 9-2 aggregate victory over Young Boys of Bern in midweek, would be difficult to overcome too. “They’re a team that has been progressing very well in the last few seasons,” he said. “They’re very fast, they work hard and they have a number of good young players in there. “Out of the pot that they were in, they were probably the top team. Not so many people have known that. They are definitely a force in German football and I’m sure they will show that over the course of the games.” LINKS IN TAGS FFS?

Big call again to take Griffiths off, he didn't look too happy, but it made a difference.
That MF gives me the fear sometimes, Aberdeen were all over us at a point. Massive few days ahead of us, I don't think I could handle watching McGregor start in the CL.

He's not afraid to make an early substitution, gives his players instructions, and doesn't look bewildered on the touchline. Could listen to the man talk about tactics all day.

He's not afraid to make an early substitution, gives his players instructions, and doesn't look bewildered on the touchline. Could listen to the man talk about tactics all day. The subs were about 55 minutes yesterday I think. Absolutely no messing about from him. It is great!

Bump to avoid it leaving the homepage.
What a start he's made.
Preparation appears to be meticulous yet if he's got it wrong he's changed it. Think the supporters may need to be a little patient with what he is trying to bring in with DDV as he's putting a fair bit of faith in Brown and Bitton's ability to drop in and make the play.
A dream start, Gibraltar apart.
