Considering retirement

On such a breathless night, he might have got 60 minutes out of a 75% match fit Sviatchenko. Not sure that would have been the right move or done Erik any longer term good, despite the way he played when he came on. Although he eventually did change the defence, we never exactly changed the personnel, just added Erik to it. I think his goal was to prevent chopping the players in the backline.

He clearly didn't want to go with O'Connell and that was his main decision to make. Plenty wouldn't have played O'Connell, including myself, so he obviously felt the need to stitch something together which included Janko instead.

With Sviatchenko, Simunovic and probably even Boyata to come back in gradually over time, we will hopefully not be in such a position again where Janko needs to start and Lustig has to come in one.

Funny as it may seem, his central midfield options are scarce. In a midfield three (which we were always going to play), McGregor is pretty much thrust upon him as almost a must pick for the time being, but it probably won't be the case for much longer. He's ahead of Armstrong and Henderson, and Johansen is so far out of the picture that he didn't even travel. The doubts remain whether Rogic can shut down space and win tackles, however much McGregor also failed to do that.

Clearly he wanted pace and genuine width so Forrest started instead of either Rogic or Armstrong. A fit Roberts means Forrest doesn't start.

His team may not have been the cleverest on reflection, but such are some of the remaining form and fitness issues, as well so many others apparently near the exit door, his options are still pretty limited. Can't wait to see what we look like with a full complement after the window shuts and we've hopefully added a class midfield player (at least).

This achievement, getting us to the group stages in his first season, might be one of his most significant.

They're desperate to manufacture some kind of rift between BR and Griffiths. After every match they've asked somethign along the lines of "Leigh looked disappointed to come iff, what was that all about"

Hard to know whether the 'Israel' comment at the end of his press conference was manners or a sly dig at the fans?
why on earth would he have a sly dig at the fans? ffs, people look for the worst in everything. :nono:
Hey, I'm not looking for the worst in everything--it just seemed a bit strange. I should have phrased this a bit better

Was specifically for the Israeli press in the room. You could hear them thank him afterward. I think he was just being nice.

He was a bawhair away from losing the faith of the multitudes, the multitudes are like that.
No he wasn't.
If we had lost 3-0 to go out after going into a second leg 3 goals ahead there would be questions asked-No?

Of course we held on for 2-0 and the rest is history.
The margins are wafer thin

Totally agree. Also, Moyes better at Man U than Van Gaal.

While forgetting Griffiths celebration last week when he ran to him

Griffiths is always a torn face git when he's subbed

And long may that continue. I want to see a player dejected when he comes off. It shows he gives a eff

FWIW - I think Brendan has done fantastically well so far.
His No. 1 target for the financial wellbeing of the club is getting to the champions league.
He's done that.
Winning the league should be a given - additional cups are the cherries on top.
So, thus far he has done exactly as we hoped he would.
It's not been pretty all along the way - but last nights result was massive.
It will have bought Brendan a load of goodwill with both fans and board.
Great stuff.

I still don't understand some of his tactical choices though.
If the plan was to sit in and soak up pressure - why didn't we start with Lustig at RB?
I mean, at CP last week, we were built to attack - 2 fast wide men, and only one DM in the form of Brown.
Last night, it seemed like we surrendered possession, but also meant to play more compact - so why the need for the pacy, but so far unreliable Janko?
Why not Erik in at CB instead of O'Connell if he wanted to make that change?
Was it due to the injuries - ie Erik just coming back, so he didn't want to start him?
Not having Lustig in at RB would also maybe give him an easier night of it too?
I know Janko is the easy target here - but I haven't seen Lustig make the kind of errors we've seen Janko, or indeed Efe make.
So why chuck him into the CB position?
IF he wanted to go 3 at the back with Lustig, he could do that anytime with Janko on the bench?

Aye, but can he do it on a wet Wednesday night away at Stoke in January?

That's nonsense.

Moyes took the Champions to 7th, Van Gaal took them to 4th the following season.

LVG failed in his second season, but that he got a second season suggests he did better than Moyes.

Van Gaal spent truckloads on players to be fair, including Di Maria: £250m.

Moyes didn't even spend half that, though he did sign Janko :nono:

I would disagree with that. Moyes was sacked after only a few months in charge. Comparing him head to head with Van Gaal over that time period, he was actually a few league points better off. And also, LVG spent a ton of money on players.

If Moyes had been given the same time and Money, then a fair comparison could be made.

Getting us over the line and into the CL groups was his first and probably most difficult task. Well done.

It can't ever be understated that he has done this with Deila's team in the main. He has taken a poor team and turned them into CL qualifiers

I think until he can call the team his there is always the chance of performances like last night. Over the next 3 transfer windows you would expect the team to be his and he will have his own guys. Let's judge him with more scrutiny then.

That's not to say we can't call out mistakes like last night but let's cut him the slack that he deserves big time.
