Absolutely no question DDV is our new number one.
Happy with that, if his distribution is as good as Brendan says it is I'm thinking goalie to Sinclair goal.

Really impressed with how quickly he's identified problem positions in the team and brought in quality replacements on a small budget. In addition, tierney and rogic extensions show the players have faith in him.

If we can bring in a quality CM and offload a couple more fringe players it really would be a near perfect transfer window. Well done to BR.

I don't disagree with your main points, but I think Tierney would have signed regardless of whether BR was manager or not. Rogic is a different matter.

I'm also hugely impressed with how BR is going about things in a rapid fashion: creating a strong mentality, identifying problem positions and signing players, contract extensions as well as improving players who we would be happy to see gone (although early days).

Very promising signs and we're getting back to where we know we can be.

Agree Tierney would in all likelihood have signed a new contract - Future Captain and personally I hope he continues to develop his game and never leaves.

I think Rogic would have been offski except for Rodgers.

BRENDAN RODGERS claims his “fearless” Celtic side is ready to cash in on summer of hard graft by hitting the £25million Champions league jackpot.

The Celtic boss insists his squad and the Parkhead moneymen couldn’t have worked harder to maximise the chances of the club making the group stages in his debut season.

Rodgers has signed Scott Sinclair, Moussa Dembele, Kolo Toure and Dorus De Vries as well as retaining Tom Rogic, Kieran Tierney and James Forrest on new deals.

The Hoops players have bought into his vision for the club and now Rodgers is adamant the side approach Wednesday’s first leg play off clash with Israeli champs Hapoel Be’er Sheva in buoyant mood.

When asked if he was ready for the clash, Rodgers said: “I’m feeling good. I don’t think we could have done any more. “The club has given me great support.

“You have to give huge credit to Peter (Lawwell), the board and Dermot (Desmond) for backing me to get the players I wanted to get in. We have arrived at the point where there’s still a lot of improvement to come, but we have shown good signs that the team can play at the tempo and with the technique I want.

“We get to Wednesday in a really good position. It’s the final step and it’s a big step we need to take.”

Celtic rested their top team ahead of the Hapoel clash – instead taking a mixture of fringe men and kids to Limerick for a 2-0 International Champions Cup defeat to Inter Milan.

But even in defeat Rodgers saw plenty to convince him that his methods have hit home at all levels of the club.

Ryan Christie, Kristoffer Ajer and Liam Henderson shone against the Italians.

Rodgers is eyeing up one more star name before the window shuts and said: “If we do that, we’d have had an incredible market in terms of what we’ve been able to bring in.”

BRENDAN RODGERS believes Celtic are in much better shape now to reach the Champions League having inherited a team in the summer that was “suffering” and “not in a good place”. The Parkhead club face Israeli champions Hapoel Be’er-Sheva at home on Wednesday night in the first leg of their play-off tie as they look to book a berth in the group stages for the first time in three years.

Rodgers praised the speed with which the squad has absorbed his philosophy since his appointment as Ronny Deila’s successor in late May, believing the players are now “playing aggressively” and “without fear”. That, says the Northern Irishman, was not the case when he first took over, the former Liverpool man sensing a malaise was still hanging over the club following their Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Rangers in April. `

“We have arrived at the point where there’s still a lot of improvement to come but we have shown good signs that the team can play at the tempo and with the technique I want,” he said. “We get to Wednesday in a really good position. It’s the final step and it’s a big step we need to take.

“I have been pleasantly surprised [with how the players have developed]. I saw the games towards the end of the season and the team was suffering after the Rangers game and whatnot. The team wasn’t in a good place. When I took the job I looked forward to see how they would develop and cope with what I wanted. I’ve been pleasantly surprised from a positive perspective. The players have bought into what we are doing.

“Now we have a mentality at the club of dominance, of wanting to be aggressive and press, and we play without fear. I still felt the players needed help and needed to bring a different tempo to the game, but they have done that. Now there’s more hard work to do.”

Rodgers praised Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell and owner Dermot Desmond for giving him the necessary resources to rebuild his squad, with Kolo Toure, Scott Sinclair, Moussa Dembele, Kristoffer Ajer and Dorus de Vries all arriving at the club in recent weeks. The manager hopes one more may yet join them before the window closes in a fortnight.

“The club has given me great support,” he added. “In all fairness when I took the job I said I would assess the team. The team was Scottish champions and I had to be fair to them and assess the players before I decided what I needed. You have to give huge credit to Peter, the board and Dermot for backing me to get the players I wanted to get in.

“One more in would be ideal. If we do that we’d have had an incredible market in terms of what we’ve been able to bring in – the club couldn’t have done any more.”

It was a largely fringe select that played in Celtic’s International Champions Cup tie against Internazionale in Limerick on Saturday but Rodgers was positive about their contribution.

“I thought a number of them did very well. It’s been hard for many of them because when you are flipping between competition and preparation it’s hard for players to get 90 minutes. I had to be fair to these boys and play them and the ones left behind were trained by me on Saturday morning.

“I thought the younger ones did very well against top quality opposition. I’m now looking forward to Wednesday and we arrive at it with a bit of confidence. Hopefully we can win the game and take some sort of advantage to the second leg.”

THOSE Celtic players despatched to Glasgow Airport on Saturday afternoon must have done so harbouring mixed feelings. As they looked around and saw who would be joining them on the flight to Limerick for the final match of the International Champions Cup, any excitement at the prospect of starting against a star-studded Internazionale side must have been tempered by the realisation that their inclusion also likely meant they would have little chance of featuring in Wednesday night’s Champions League play-off tie against Hapoel Be’er-Sheva. Manager Brendan Rodgers had clearly weighed up his options and decided that there was little point risking his established picks in a match of little consequence, no matter how this competition has been dressed up with sponsors a-plenty and booming American voiceovers echoing around each stadium. As a consequence, any Israeli scouts in Ireland or watching on television would not have gleaned much about the side they will face at Celtic Park in the first leg.

What they and others would have learned, however, is that Rodgers’ philosophy has clearly permeated far beyond those who fill the first-team strips on a matchday. This was a much-changed Celtic team, with a first appearance of the season for Dedryck Boyata and rare outings for the likes of Stefan Johansen and Nadir Ciftci, but all the other hallmarks of Rodgers’ revolution were there. The team played with confidence against superior opposition, showed tactical discipline, sustained a draining, high pressing game, and adapted well to Rodgers’ in-game alterations. It spoke of systemic change at the club, of training drills and team meetings that have been absorbed not just by top-team regulars but also by those who know there is only a slim chance of them featuring most weeks. Little wonder Rodgers displayed an air of satisfaction having achieved so much in such a short space of time.

“You could see that even a young team against Inter Milan had the confidence to get on the ball, take them on and create chances,” said the manager. “And I might not have thought I had that when I first came in. Ryan Christie was excellent, Liam Henderson was very good. I’ve been talking to Liam about improving tactically. Technically he’s very good and demands the ball which I love in a player. Tactically we’ve tried to improve his positioning and against Inter you could see he can play the game really well.”

Fringe players have more of a case to grumble about a new manager’s ways than most but there have been few dissenting voices inside the Celtic camp this season. Ciftci has barely featured under the new regime with Leigh Griffiths and new signing Moussa Dembele starting in attack in most games but the Turk could not have been more complimentary about the changes Rodgers has brought in. Ciftci captained the team against Inter and showed some nice touches – playing in Stuart Armstrong with a sweet flick in the first half before striking the crossbar with a volley in the second – and he revealed himself to be a fan of Rodgers’ philosophy.

“I have said this before and I will always say it - he is the best manager I have worked under,” he said. “His quality is so high. I have only been working with him for a few months but I have learned so many things already. It is an honour to play for a manager like him and he has been very good for me so far.”

Cifci endured a difficult first year as a Celtic player, sitting out six games due to a domestic ban before spending the second half of the season on loan at Eskisehirspor in Turkey. He revealed the difference between then and now is night and day.

“It feels much different from a year ago – both football-wise and atmosphere-wise,” he added. “The way we play, the way the manager wants us to play, the way he sets up everything - the atmosphere comes from that. The stadium is getting fuller and fuller because the way we are playing people are wanting to come to our stadium. Trust me, this will only get better and better the longer the season goes and it’s only been a couple of months so far.

“I think the belief has always been there but it just didn’t come out properly. When you get a few disappointing results in games you get a bit low but whatever happens with this manager – no matter how many times we lose in a row – I don’t think we’ll lose our confidence that easily. He keeps everyone on their toes. I only have good feelings.

“We’re already scoring a lot of late goals which is the result of a good pre-season. The manager said when he came: “I’m going to make you guys a machine”. What’s it been – two and a half months? We are almost there. I can’t wait to see what we are going to be like at the end of the season.”

Ciftic hopes he will still be around to experience that. “I will speak with the manager. I will listen to whatever he says. I just want to do my best for him and for the club. Hopefully it is going to be here. I have had good chats with him so far. We’ve not spoken about me going on loan. If something like this comes along we have to think about it but I haven’t thought about it yet to be honest.”

I hope Ciftci isn't getting carried away. I especially hope that the first choice team isn't either.
We're looking great & the positives are clear - but we've won eff all yet.
Go out & spank this mob midweek, that's the talking I want.

Bloody hell those are some positive words from a guy who's been at best on the fringes. When you hear that from guys like Ciftci you know it's really hitting home to them that they've a chance to do something and be part of something special here. That's outstanding man management.

Tis funny how the 'most embarssing defeat in our history' has been completely forgotten a few weeks after it happened. All that guff was WAAAY over the top.
I think that defeat spurred the board into spending the cash and BTW it was the biggest riddy ever in our history.

We lose to Sevco in a penalty shoot-out and you think it's the biggest embarrassment in our History :ffs:

You don't seem to know much about our history (you only need to go back one month to the Red Imps game in Gibraltar for a fairly embarrassing result) :cuckoo:

Losing to Rangers in that game in those circumstances did seem like the most embarrassing defeat in our history (or at least in living memory) at the time.

The fact that Hibs gubbed them in the final - thanks, Stokesy - salved the embarrassment by taking their bragging rights away.
