Brendan Rodgers has given an insight into the meticulous attention to detail which he insists will leave his Celtic players with only themselves to blame if they fail to meet their targets this season.

The former Liverpool boss saw the Scottish champions make a winning start to their Premiership title defence on Sunday when they recovered from the controversial concession of a penalty kick to beat Hearts 2-1 at Tynecastle.

Rodgers has revealed he and his backroom team brief their players not only on their opponents ahead of matches but also provide analysis of the referee in charge.

“It’s about us knowing as a staff that we have done absolutely everything for the players to gain that extra
1 per cent,” said Rodgers. “Then they don’t have any excuses. Creating that no excuse environment is very important.

“It’s not homework, but the players are all given a document on the opponent. Everything is in there about the individual player they are playing against. We look at the offensive organisation of the opponent and the same defensively. We look at the different phases of transition, offensive and defensive.

“We also study the referee. We look at the last 35 games of the ref and look at his form going into games. Does he give particular cards at a high level or not?

“So we study the opponent and the referee in depth. But then it is the choice of the player. It’s never forced onto them.

“All of them will take away a document that will allow them to be fully 100 per cent prepared for the game.

“Some will read it religiously, read every letter that is on there. Some, I’m sure, will set it down after ten seconds and not look at it again.”

While reaching the Champions League group stage and winning a sixth consecutive title for the club are Rodgers’ main objectives, he is keen to succeed in every competition.

Rodgers is content with the currently demanding schedule of two games every week in different competitions. “It just means you have to use various tools to help them develop,” he added. “They are playing Wednesday, recovering Thursday so the nutrition is important in order to maximise their loading for the next game.

“We do lots of video, individually and in team analysis and on top of that we work on the field. There is an awful lot of work being poured into them.”

Its the Dave Brailsford approach, the law of marginal gains. Hard to do and resource intensive but definitely increases your chances of success if you can do it.

He's fair molding the team isn't he? Last time I can remember us being so busy was probably Lennons first year. Not a huge amount in but good players in and lots of new deals and outgoings; been a good first summer under Rodgers. Has recovered brilliantly from the Gibraltar game, and is putting a lot of really interesting things in place. Brilliant!

It is enormous in sports now. England attributed it to them winning the Rugby world cup in 2003, but they had ripped the idea off UK Cycling (under David Brailsford as another poster correctly pointed out) who made massive progress in both track and subsequently road cycling due to it.

Problem is, it is as mentioned 'resource intensive' so while Celtic can afford to employ interns etc to put together dossiers of a referees last 30 games, Ross County cannot. On the flip side, Real Madrid have a private hotel for their players beside the training pitch, with personalised mattresses, blinds etc to ensure players get the perfect sleep/recovery between sessions. Celtic were supposed to build accommodation at Lennoxtown in "phase 2" of its development but this was scrapped years ago as a cost cutting measure. EPL clubs are now installing sleep pods etc at their training grounds (Rogers former club Swansea being one) and as we have seen recently there is a clear difference in fitness/athletic performance between EPL sides and ourselves, due to a better training environment at these clubs.

Actually looking forward to games again now rather than the usual pish of the last few seasons

Seen more tactics/formations in the last 5 games than the last 2 seasons

Rodgers actually changed the shape of the team rather than the same week in week out regardless of who we are playing, we have even seen him change the shape during the game recently :o

What's the Brendan Rodgers song the GB sing?
Brendan Rodgers, Brendan Rodgers you heard us calling in the night,
Brendan Rodgers, Brendan Rodgers you came home to lead the green and white.

No comment on the song, but as for the manager himself I'm more positive

The difference after a month of competitive football - with virtually the same squad of players as last season - is remarkable.

What is he going to do when we have everyone fit and able to play?

Team is coming along leaps and bounds from that shampooe in Gibraltar. His signings have all been solid, players we wrote off look like players again, and the youths are stepping up. This here is the right track, we've been waiting a long time to get back on it. A proper manager for sure.

Don't want to get carried away (I've been hurt before), but eff it.

It feels like something special is happening here.

Treble.
