Not getting too carried away yet....last night was a decent performance, but we still created few clear cut chances for the domination we had and were wasteful with the couple of chances we did create from open play. We were up against a team who are known to struggle away from home and yet despite keeping them pretty much pinned back in their own half for 45 minutes it took a crazy needless challenge just inside the box when the ref was about to blow the whistle for half time to give us the lead. I thought the switch to the back 3, or more accurately the brief but inevitable period of confusion while the defence re-organised, did cost us the equaliser. The error came when O'Connell seemed to switch off, Tierney wasn't close enough to cover his mistake, Gordon did the right thing and got a decent amount of distance on his clearance, but the Astana player showed great technique to bring the ball down and lob him before he got back on his line. I don't blame Rodgers for that though - the team is always going to be vulnerable for a minute or two when you make a formation change like that and players are sorting out their new responsibilities, so it's just the risk a manager has to take when he wants to change it. There are some positive signs for Rodgers though - he's clearly prepared to adjust tactics to suit the opposition as well as the players he has available and the players appear to be responding and raising their game for him....both of which are clear improvements on the Deila tenure. But I think it will take a couple of months at least for him to work out the tactics and personnel that work best for him at Celtic....which I think is consistent with what I've read about his time at both Swansea and Liverpool Decent start...but I've been hurt too many times in the past to completely surrender to the Brendan love quite yet

He said at the outset the only thing he could do in the first few games given the squad and time constraints was make us more compact and hard to beat. I think on last nights evidence he has done that. A back four with a 20 year old with next to no first game experience and two teenage fullbacks with equally very little experience of the pressure in these qualifiers coupled with a veteran but makeshift centre back, coped very well in the shape he set up. He knows when and how to change it, albeit his starting line up especially in midfield is questionable but when the only other options were starting with Johansen who is not fully up to speed or Rogic. who seems out of favour due to not committing to the club, you can understand why he went with the other limited options we have. The players have bought into him and I think the plea to the fans for a little more patience in games was as much a "trust me I`m not Ronnie Deila" plea as it was about making us aware of what he`s trying to do with ball possession at the moment. |

I like the fact he's addressing the fans and making sure we get onside with the way his teams play. Patience has never really been a great virtue of our support, but we need to exhibit the same patience as the team going forward. Possession is vital in Europe. Keeping the ball is almost an alien concept to us. That should change, and Rodgers is telling it as it is. He fills me with confidence. |

I thought he done the right thing. They were creeping into the game anyway, mainly because they had to open up a bit and I could see the logic in throwing a very experienced Toure to 'steady the ship' and tighten things up. Not too sure how it almost cost us the tie? They didn't have a single attempt worth mentioning minus Gordon's howler. It was Dembele and Griffiths that linked up for the winner, btw. That doesn't happen if we stayed with the initial formation. |

I'm a glass half empty dick by nature but BR was/is right to ask for more patience from the support especially in Europe. I do believe that under RD the results would have been different against Astana, there is still a confidence issue with the squad that will take time to turn around. What I do hope to see is a more dominant attitude in the SPL, we need to set down a marker from the start, you come to CP and you get a Rodgering (forgive the pun) The gulf in class should be exhibited against the dross we face in Scotland. |

Last night they had a corner and we had Griffiths, Roberts and Forrest on the half way line. I like that, a lot. The substitutions where spot on, again, last night. He was correct in what he said post match about the moaning with the backward passes. Good start. |

I thought the back four looked comfortable and Astana didn't look like scoring apart from when Gordon flapped at a free kick. We lost the goal because we changed formation and lost cohesion at the back for a few minutes. I thought it was a crazy thing to do given we were in the driving seat in the tie. |

Think that was an reaction to our lack of height and general pishness defending corners. Good tactic though as it reduces their options. |

You could look at this another way though. We were playing a team who sat and defended well. Despite this we did create some very good chances. Griffiths should have scored at least one more goal from open play. Armstrong also had a very good chance. We created enough. Dembele was in a great position when he was taken down. Rodgers has started very well. Under Ronny we would have lost last night. Edited by allthewine, 4 Aug 2016, 11:24 AM.

I disagree. We lost the goal through a cracking ball from the Astana defender which was more or less weighted perfectly. Gordon, rightfully comes, but then makes a carrot of it. Again. The change to the 3-5-2 brought the winner. Edited by Dannybhoy95, 4 Aug 2016, 11:31 AM.

His tactical versatility is very refreshing. He won't always get it right but we won't suffer him getting it wrong with the same turgid stuff as Deila. It's not gonna happen over night but I'll be interested to see where we are in a year's time. There's a good chance we might get the sort of football that Deila promised. |

Billy McNeill - "Mr Celtic"

I think the confidence factor is vital as he knows the squad is so far away from what is really needed but until he can get his players in and offload the dross (which is not as easy as it sounds as any realist will know) he has to work with what he has and confidence, belief and respect can work wonders. There is a reason why Jock Stein when he was he Real Boss at Celtic Park always without fail called Jimmy McGrory "Boss" in front of everybody at the ground - There is a reason similarly that over 50 years down the line from when he came back from Birmingham that Ten Thirty still to this day talks about Jock Stein as "The Boss" and Danny McGrain to this day if you are privileged enough to talk Celtic with him still will always refer to Jock no matter how informal the discussion is as "Mr.Stein" - You can actually feel the respect Danny has for Jock - It is almost as if he thinks it would be wrong and disrespectful to call Jock anything but Mr.Stein. You get that respect you can start instilling belief and confidence - Rodgers seems to quickly be building that respect. Edited by CaltonBhoy1967, 4 Aug 2016, 12:14 PM.

He saw what happened from the set piece with the disallowed goal and set about changing it immediately. No doubt in my mind. His confidence in Toure is obviously near total, and he seemed resolved to give him 20-30 mins in the game. That's fine by me. The formation change did affect the goal conceded in my opinion as no one pressures the passer, Tierney is adjusting to a higher position and the central defence is temporarily AWOL. Still, as has been said many times, it is odds against that it would be punished quite so readily in many other scenarios, given what Ibraimi achieved. There was also the one other Astana chance where the lad skipped into the left side of the box unchallenged and curled a shot wide. When the adjustment settled down, it was the combination of having two strikers pressing from the front and combining that ultimately won the all important penalty. So it's 1-1 on that score in terms of how the change worked out. Add in the tactical blow of losing Roberts and what that does to a gameplan, and I think he can be given all the slack necessary for last night. Totally behind him on the patience plea by the way. As a support we have become conditioned out of any Celtic team genuinely trying to keep the ball and play from the back for years. We are simply not used to it being done in any meaningful way. |

You get what you pay for and BR's stock was still high enough to walk into most big jobs in the world. The ability to tweak things that makes a big difference is something that average managers lack. I've said it from the start if he fails then I don't think we could have got anyone that would have done better. |

Reminds me of how MON started. Slowly but surely, steady results and improving game by game, mon exploded with the 6-2 and never looked back that season. The difference is Mon was buying the likes of Sutton joos Lennon etc for big money while Brendan has only 1 signing in that he wanted for 300k or something. I'm impressed with the performances he is getting out of that team from last year and although not fantastic, we need to see how much better we become if he gets the players he wants in. What has impressed me compared to our last few managers is if it's not working he will change it, he has plan a b c and d, compared to plan a only. Imps result aside(players all getting another chance and letting the shirt down again)it is slowly getting better |
