Am I the only person who thought the change from a back four to a back three almost cost us the tie? Or is it too soon to criticise BR?
The only thing that could have cost us the game was Gordon's mistakes.

Change was good, they offered no wide threat, Armstrong wasn't doing much and we needed an extra body in MF
That's just not true. They offered no threat at all until the change which allowed their fullbacks to get forward and start stretching our midfield and defence.

We needed to change things but not like that IMO. We needed to calm things down, stop being so frantic.

After that we had no choice but to bring Dembele on for Forrest.
I thought the change from back 4 to a back 3 let them back into the game

They were already coming into the game. We started the second-half poorly and just minutes before the goal Gordon flapped at a free-kick and was spared only by the linesman's flag. That, understandably, spooked the manager into thinking that we needed Toure's experience to see us through.

His second change won us the tie, by the way.

His post match presser was really good. Spoke excellently about the support needing patience and needing to have faith. Also said that Dembele would be number one penalty taker from here on in which I thought was intriguing.
He has similar ideas to RD but is much more assertive. No onfield debates about who is going to take a pen,Ronny would never have chided the support and especially in the way Rodgers is brave in his team selection and his willingness to change formation.

If he gets this team into the CL and gets Lawwell to spend money on some decent quality signings, then he will have performed miracles. Has taken on a group of players, and fans, completely shot of confidence, and has already gone some way to turning that around.
He speaks well, has obvious leadership qualities, and is exactly what we need right now.
:)

Ok, but I disagree.

The change happened because they were already solid in MF and scored from a flat ball above central defence, only to have to chalked off, that was the warning. We lacked height at the back and we let them back into the game before Gordon's mistakes for the allowed goal.

World class he is in my opinion. To get through that tie, with Lustig and a kid from Ireland at the back, against quality opposition who ath madrid galatasaray and benfica couldn't beat away was an achievement. Guarenteed European football to xmas with essentially the same squad as Ronny bar Moussa . Absolutely over the moon. He's brought heart, a feel good factor and he's got a very average bunch of footballers believing in the cause , after the first goal in Astana the wheels would have come off and lost convincenly last year. Last night similar after the error for their goal. But on both occasions wonderful character and heart to get back into it. Brendan is world class

Occasional Substitute

It's hard to let go of the anxiety when we think back to last year and the times we conceded late or sloppy goals which cost us points or a cup match, but Brendan is right though, we the fans have to be more patient as games progress. I thought we got a bit lucky with the two late late penalties, the first one obviously changed the mood just before half time but as Astana came into the game the atmosphere changed and that does transfer to the players. # In Brendan we trust

I couldn't see the point in it at the time given how comfortable we'd looked.

His next substitution won us the game though.

Didn't realise Rogic was on the bench. Strange considering how lacking in creativity we were. Guess we were in a winning position at from the kick off until they scored. I'd have him in the team before three of those who played last name night but maybe he doesn't cover enough ground for the manager.

Had a go at the fans - rightly - for lack of patience in passing the ball backwards.

Good manager

 couldn't put it any better.

Amazing the difference one man can make. A genuinely top class manager. I shudder to think how we'd have lined up for those two legs under RD.

Showed in this tie why the manager is the most important person at the football club. His substitutions and tactical changes in both legs made a major difference. The ability of a manager to positively change a game that's already in progress is something we've lacked for a long time. We've reached the point in the competition now though where he needs better players as we can only carry four or five weak links for so long.

Fantastic.

3 goals in 3 games from his pressing style.

Paddy Roberts closing down and passing to Griffiths in Astana
Griffiths vs Barca
KT winning tonight's pen for Griffiths
This is the most evident change for me.

We are now hunting down every ball in the opposition third with at least 3 men. Forrest of all players is excelling at it. Roberts and Griffiths are doing a great job too. It's already scored us two vital goals. Brilliant to see.

I'm glad he made a few comments about the support at the game tonight. Some of the moaning when there is a square pass or two is absolutely mad.
Totally agree. Said the same thing to my mate last night at the game. The moaning every time the ball went backwards was ridiculous.

Some things never change. This is Scottish Football. We still have some troglodytes who'd rather we 'hoof it into the mixer'.

I think it is obvious the players trust him. So much of football is the mentality and belief, and he has instilled a belief in what is a very average team.

Making a vow not to bring Ronny up again because it's time to move on, but I'm pretty sure we would have lost that game last night under him.

Shows his strength taking on the support so early in his tenure but
I think even he would admit the ball was played backward far too
often.

I'd agree - I though they were coming back into it for about 10 mins before their goal. They started to hassle and crowd our midfielders and we became sloppy.

I never saw the point brining on Dembele tbh given how little service our forwards were getting but that's why he's the manager.

Already there is evidence of a huge shift forward from last season. Now we appear to have a genuine pressing game which works, not just talk about a pressing game. The players genuinly appear to have confidence in themselves. The squad still needs an overall. It is in no way good enough to compete at Champions league level, but last night is a game that I am pretty sure we would have lost last season. The players would have panicked, the crowd would have panicked, and so would our management team. There is a calmness and assuredness there that wasn't there last year and that is very pleasing to see.

Now, get the cheque book out Pedro in order that we can build on it.

I agree with the comments about the pressing style he has introduced. The early signs are good and it should hopefully lend itself to delivering some utter horsings this season.
