Thought this was very clever today.

When defending in our half we dropped into a standard 442
Posted Image

When we had the ball we quickly moved into a 352
Posted Image

The defence looked solid and he obviously recognises both Lustig's strengths and weaknesses.

The midfield were much sharper and the movement was much improved. There was also a real emphasis on Ajer and O'Connell stepping into midfield to help create an extra man that really opened up the angles for forward passing.

Really huge improvement from Tuesday night. Delighted.
Nice post

Noticed this today also, very fluid systems. Works for me as long as we improve a few of the players within it.

Good win on Wednesday with a signing or two and we are back on track.

Yip, a new CB, a solid rb and a real holding midfielder and we look decent. Still a bit of deadwood to clear and then a few players targeted for January or next summer. It's not all doom and gloom to be honest.

Agreed, would just be a lot happier if we get them in before the next round - if we get there obviously.

Well, it is doom and gloom until some of the stuff you mention actually materialises!

I'm excited about having Brendan as manager, I'm excited for the new season and I'm excited by the prospect of new signings to upgrade the team. Yes it would be good to have a few more in now but we need to be realistic and patient with trust in Brendan's vision.

It probably wasn't planned , just Tierney charging up the park with wild abandon and everyone else having to move over a bit to cover for him.

I think someone with a bit of creativity is more important than a right back as we have Lustig, Janko and fisher o can play there!

Brendan just said on sky sports that it was a 442 that morphed into a 352 exactly as the formation above showed!

Been pretty negative towards Celtic over the past few days - humiliation will kinda do that to me.

Yesterday seems to have brought a fair bit of positivity back amongst some of the support can't wait to be hopefully proved wrong.

Which kinda goes to show the importance of formations/systems are over hyped. The reason we played so well yesterday was mainly due to armstrong and mcgregor linking the play and playing some nice stuff, getting other players involved in the game with some good, quick passing and moving. Lustig clearly was told to stay put as it was his first game back.

I don't think that shows the irrelevance of formations/systems. It shows the importance of flexibility to move formations.

NL tried to changes things mid-match but at set times and for no immediately apparent reason. I remember is starting 3-5-2 against Motherwell away and absolutely hammering them for first 20 mins then suddenly switching to 4-4-2 diamond on his instructions. It was working really well as it was.

The year after Seville MON switched from a rigid 3-5-2 to a very flexible 4-4-2 (Agathe at right back and McNamara at left back) which could switch back to 3-5-2 with Agathe moving forward.

The players within the system are the most important thing. You need a Lustog who can play as a right back and a centreback. Armstrong has to be willing to shift from an inside left midfield role to an outside left midfield role. Roberts would be asked to do a decent defensive shift of we were up against a good side. Mulgrew would actually be good for the left sided defensive role (where O'Connell started) as he is left footed and has experience of left back and central defence

I think this season you will see us play a different formation when we defend to when we attack therefore have two game formations and the type of formations we use will very much be dependant on who the opposition is and whether we are home or away. Rodgers has always been proactive with this approach and sets up formations he believes will win a game which is complete opposite to Daila who set his philosophy up as a 4-2-3-1 which was very easy for teams to negate, especially in Europe as they knew we would never waiver from that.

I gave him pelters for his team selection and substitutions against the imps but he already seems to have established a number of key things, if yesterday's game is anything to go by;

- We don't have the players for a 4-3-3
- Ambrose is guff
- Bitton has chucked it

If he plays the 4-4-2/3-5-2 rotation on Wednesday without Ambrose or Bitton then he will have already shown signs of good management.

Tuesday night was as humiliating as it gets but it's refreshing to see Rodgers immediately try other formations, quite possibly he had geared the players up for 4-3-3 for Tuesday and therefore didn't want to change it to an untried tactic, probably believing than on our worst day those guys would still find a way to win the match, probably the reality check he needed this early on.

Despite the Imps result I'm still genuinely excited about how we're going to do this Season.

Rodgers now needs to be "brave" and get rid of biton and rogic from that midfield that played against Lincoln and reduce browns role to playing after European games. If he does that it will be an exciting season - if he brings biton etc back in then it will be no different to anything we have seen for the last 2 seasons.
