Not defending it and it doesn't have a good name

Just find it weird that all these loan wolf types thing that 'kds' has one agreed opinion, an imaginary hive mind where we all just agree all day long.

BRENDAN RODGERS, as the famous song goes, well knows the history of Celtic but he is never going be overwhelmed by it.

Not by 1967 and all that. Nor the 1970’s which was a glorious decade for the club when European finals and semi-finals happened every other year. He won't feel overawed by the mention of Seville or the win over Barcelona a few seasons back.

Rodgers is here to be a success, a word that has slightly changed meaning at Celtic Park in recent times. He realises that before he can dream of Lisbon, not being humiliated by the likes of Malmo would be a decent start.

The latest man to sit in the manager’s office would love to at least attempt to emulate those previous feats carried out by giants from the past but let him walk before he can run.

Because recent Celtic history when it comes to showing Johnny Foreigner what’s what, bar one or two choice moments, has not been enough to make the supporters’ hearts to do anything but break - never mind go sad.

Rodgers is well aware that all things Champions League have not gone to plan of late. That is why he is at Celtic. His job now is to fix things, starting with what should be the simplest of tasks against the wonderfully names Lincoln Red Imps in Gibraltar on Tuesday.

“Listen, for me what happened before is the past,” said the Celtic manager. “I am already looking ahead and looking forward. I know what happened, I know goals were conceded blah, blah, blah but my job is to look forward with real positivity.

“I can only vouch for what I’ve seen and so far it’s been absolutely first class. We still have a long way to go, a long way to go in the pre-season, and we have these games to try and qualify, but I am a great believer in looking forward.

“You can over-analyse things. The bottom line is it happened. They went on to win the title, which was great, and now we’ve got to roll it out and go forward.”

Pressure is a big word in football and over the past two years, to be frank, too often the Celtic players did not respond in the right manner during the bigger games, both at home and most certainly in European competition.

Rodgers, when looking for players this summer, will take into consideration the character of any potential signings, their ability to able to handle big qualifiers and, he must hope, actual Champions League group matches.

“I think it is part of playing for a club like Celtic,” said the Northern Irishman. “You don’t always have to be the best player but you’ve got to cope with pressure and cope with that demand, whether you are a player or the manager at a club like Celtic.

“You are at one of the big institutions and you have to be able to deal with it. The pressure will come. The pressure always comes. And that’s not always about the talent. You guys will have seen it a lot more than me over the years at clubs like Celtic where you can have big talents who maybe can’t cope with pressure.

“So the idea is to get the personality right, the profile right, so that in those moments they can stay calm and deal with it. I know that it will come, no matter how much you dominate a game: there will be moments in that game when the pressure will come. You just stay calm, stay focused, and we hopefully try to train for that.

“It will always ultimately be about players and how you cope with pressure. What you try to do, especially in this short period of time, is give them strategies in order to cope and try to put them in pressure situations and match situations.

“We train at a real intensity so the situations we do are all real-game exercises. But of course you try to limit the mistakes and hopefully they can take that into the game. It is a wee bit of both: you can train it and develop it but it’s about the players and players who constantly make mistake. I haven’t got a magic wand.”

That he does not have; however, he does have a plan, both for the next few weeks when three rounds of qualifiers have to be negotiated, and then for the coming months when and how his Celtic team is going to win and entertain.

But first things first.

“I think at the minute it’s just about changing a little that can hopefully change a lot for us,” said Rodgers. “And then over time that rolls out and it becomes the fluent, aggressive way of playing and that comes through personnel and through ideas.

“There should be a team and a group that over time will get better and better and better. Our work is to improve players individually and collectively, and then eventually we have 11 players with one brain in the team.

“And that one brain takes a bit of time to filter through. In the meantime we have to try to pound away.”

Chris Sutton: Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers proving he is calling all the shots at Parkhead with direct Gibraltar trip
06:00, 9 JUL 2016

BY CHRISSUTTON
OUR columnist and former Hoops hitman believes his former club have recruited a manager with real pedigree.

THE devil is in the detail and it’s already becoming obvious Celtic have now got a manager with real clout.

It might not seem like much but Brendan Rodgers ripping up the travel plans at such short notice just shows the influence he already has at Celtic .

They were meant to be going back from Slovenia to Glasgow today and then heading to Gibraltar on Monday.

Rodgers was having none of it. He wanted to go straight out there and he got his wish. It says it all.

It will probably cost the club about £50,000 but the manager is calling the shots.

No disrespect to Ronny Deila but would he have been able to pull off something like this?

I doubt it. Ronny was happy to go with the flow but Rodgers is clearly calling the shots.

He arrived in Slovenia and didn’t fancy the pitches at the HQ the club had picked. What did he do? He got them moved.

It’s the same with the Gibraltar trip. No one expected Lincoln Red Imps to get through so it was assumed it would be Flora Tallinn on Wednesday night.

As soon as the game changed to Gibraltar on Tuesday, Rodgers knew what needed to be done.

This is what happens when you have a heavyweight manager. There’s shades of Martin O’Neill about Rodgers. He is the one dictating everything at the club and I must admit it’s good to see.

The only hope is the same can be said when it comes to his transfer dealings.

It’s clear Brendan is not going to panic when it comes to making new signings. He’s brought in Moussa Dembele and it already looks an outstanding piece of business.

Dembele might be just 19 years old but he’s a proven goalscorer in the Championship and will no doubt improve the team.

That’s the key. Brendan is not going around looking to just bolster the squad. He is looking for players who will go straight into his starting line-up.

He seems quite relaxed right now but at some point he is going to have to strengthen.

Let’s be honest, Lincoln Red Imps shouldn’t pose too much of a problem. That’s not being mean to the Gibraltar side but you have to be realistic.

You can’t take them lightly but, come on, Celtic should wipe the floor with them with the players they have at their disposal right now.

But it could be a different story in the next round.

I still have concerns about the defence and I see Efe Ambrose has made his way out to Slovenia. Efe is a nice bloke but if Bayer Leverkusen have offered £1.5million for him Celtic should charter a plane for him out to Germany.

It’s too big a risk to count on him in these qualifiers. Erik Sviatchenko looks decent but he needs someone with real presence alongside him.

I’ve been banging on about the centre-half position for a while and it is still a major issue for me.

There is still talk of Kolo Toure and he’d definitely fit the bill. Sometimes a short-time solution is not a bad thing.

Toure will have big money options in the likes of Qatar or further afield so if it comes down to money then forget it.

But he might fancy a season at Celtic, playing in the Champions League and in front of full houses every week.

Brendan can only ask him the question but he could be the answer.

There is also the Charlie Mulgrew situation which needs resolving quickly. He has a future at the club. He’s versatile and can play a number of positions well.

Players like Charlie are a dream for a manager because of their reliability to step in at short notice in numerous slots and do a decent job time and again.

But it seems to be a stand-off at present with Charlie waiting and assessing his options but Brendan saying: “I like you but on my terms.”

Charlie is well within his rights to try to get his best possible contract but you get the feeling under the new manager that it’s Brendan who holds the cards.

The manager seems to be taking his time but I still believe there will be major changes at the club.

There will be players leaving and I know there is talk about interest in the likes of Nir Bitton and Stefan Johansen.

I’d like to see Bitton stay. Celtic have a million midfielders but they don’t have many like him. If Espanyol or someone else stump up £10m then it might be too hard to refuse but Bitton is a good foil for Scott Brown and is a key player.

It might be early days but it’s already clear Rodgers is firmly in charge.

edit to add; hadn't heard that, about him having us moved in Slovenia. Good news if it's true, but also a sad indictment of the penny-pinching ways of the Splob. Let's hope Brendan's power-play eventually sickens the bstrt intae leaving :)

Would love to see us play a 442 Diamond with an attacking line up of

Ajer
Henderson-McGregor
Roberts
Dembele-Griffiths

All cable of passing and controlling the ball. Some of them even move without the ball

It's a formation I'd like to see too. I don't want to see Griffiths played out wide.

I think McGregor is a must have.
He could be one of our best midfielders to come through for ages, but needs his chance.
Think he'll be perfect for one of the midfield shuttlers in a 433.
Controls the ball with one touch, often even heartattack passes. Makes space for himself. Has energy & can pass & shoot accurately.

He could save us a lot of money, if Brendan gives him a chance - but would mean dropping either Brown, Bitton or Johansen, which I would advocate.

Anyone else bee more impressed when we have set up 4-2-3-1 than 4-3-3?

I think it may be because Rogic has been playing in the #10 role. For me him and Armstrong have played their way into the team for the Imps game.

Brown Armstrong

Roberts Rogic Christie

Griffiths/Dembele

According to this article, Griffiths will be playing out on the right.
Griffiths mentions Dembele being the target man and him (Griffiths) playing behind him.

Future is wide open for Celtic star Leigh Griffiths

Rodgers will play Griffiths up top sooner rather than later. This sides lack of goals will force his hand.

Where will Roberts fit in?

hopefully sinclair on the left which would leave roberts and griffiths fighting for the place on the right of the attack

I'd play Griffiths in the middle with Dembele coming from the left . 40 goals from the Middle means you keep him exactly there

Rodgers used to play Suarez wide right and occasionally even Sturridge wide left. They would interchange and come central when needed and built a great partnership together.

I think he knows what he's doing.

More goals for the team even it means less goals for Griffiths is the way forward.
