Was Rodgers not already sounded out about the England job and decided to come here instead? Was certainly the rumour. He turned them down because he had "unfinished business at club level." He certainly seems to have his admirers at the FA, and the English media are talking about him quite a bit, though fortunately it's extremely unlikely he'd leave after 40 odd days in the job. His media conference today should be interesting.
Just goes to show the coup the club have pulled off by bringing him here.

BRENDAN Rodgers last night laughed off England links and insisted he’d never walk away from his dream job at Celtic . The Hoops boss is among the favourites for the Three Lions gig following Roy Hodgson’s departure with bookies installing him as a 10/1 shot. Rodgers held informal talks with the FA in the past over the position but insisted there is no way he’d turn his back on Celtic after just 42 days in charge - and without a ball being kicked in anger. The Northern Irishman said: “I haven’t put a foot wrong here! Brilliant. “It shows you what the world of football is now, the gossip and speculation that goes on. “I’ve just landed my dream job. The team I’ve supported all my life. I haven’t even walked out for my first game. “Imagine me as a Celtic supporter having walked out on the job at Parkhead! “It’s a tough job, England. They’ve got a lot of good players but there is huge pressure, huge expectancy. “It has been like that for a few years now. “I see Jose Mourinho has also been linked with it. He’s unbeaten too! “I’ll be at Celtic, that’s for sure.” Rodgers admitted he has sympathy with Hodgson but insisted he had enough on his plate at Celtic as he builds for the Champions League. He said: “Is it flattering? It’s football. There are very few professions where one minute you’re up, then down, then up again – that’s just how it goes. “There is a great group of players there. They’ve got some wonderful talents in that England squad. But it has been difficult for them at this tournament – and it has been like that for a few tournaments. “So it’s unfortunate how it ended for Roy because he’s a good man, a very good coach. “They now obviously have to appoint someone and look at creating an identity, a way the team can play. “For me, it is what it is in football. You’re up, then you’re down. “But, if people think I can do jobs at a high level, then that’s fine. “But I’m busy here, worrying about what I have to do here.” Rodgers admitted his delight at making Moussa Dembele his first signing and he is plotting to land more new recruits ahead of the Champions League qualifiers in two week’s time. Experienced Liverpool defender Kolo Toure is one option being considered with the Ivory Coast star out of contract. The Hoops boss is also awaiting the outcome of contract talks with Charlie Mulgrew, who has remained in Scotland but admitted a deal is far from a formality. Rodgers said: “If there is not an agreement, that will obviously just run out. “If it happens, we’d like him to be with us sooner rather than later. But he’s out of contract and within his rights. “There is always obviously a fear for a player when they come out of contract, if they train and get injured, they could be snookered. “So I respect that and understand that completely. “He seems a good guy, I’ve talked to him on the phone and people I’ve talked to around the club like him. “But obviously it’s probably the last contract of his career, so he has to make sure he’s making the right choice for him and his family.” Rodgers has settled in to Celtic’s Slovenia base and he admitted he’s relishing his chance to get down to work witht he Hoops. He said: “I’m been pleasantly surprised by the whole team. I’ve had one of the most enjoyable weeks I’ve had in football for a long, long time working with this group. “There’s no egos. They are straight guys who want to learn and develop. We’ll give them the structures and perameters. “There are obviously players I was more aware of than others. Then there are ones like Kristoffer Ajer, 18-yeers-old and 6ft5ins, but athletic and can play football. “I have been pleased by the standard and how they take on board what we give them.” Rodgers is keeping tabs on Celtic’s potential Champions League opponents and received reports on Tallinn’s 2-1 first leg win against Lincoln Red Imps. He said: “I think the Tallinn team were pretty comfortable, could have scored four or five in the first half – and they maybe then took the foot off the gas in the second half. “It leaves it a bit tricky for them at 2-1. But we had people there watching them and analysing. We will be ready for whoever we have to play.” http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/celtic-dream-job-wont-quitting-8312470#4mS3QE0JsVdBQRac.99

While Rangers have recruited heavily ahead of this season’s Premiership campaign, Dembele represents the only fresh recruit to walk through the Lennoxtown front door. It says a lot about what Rodgers makes of the players that travelled to Slovenia with him on Monday night. The Celtic manager spoke in positive and honest tones about the group who in two weeks will launch their Champions League qualification campaign, and insists that while there may be more arrivals, he has declared himself pleasantly surprised by what he has seen of his current players so far. “We’ve got some kids here who have impressed me, like young [Ryan] Christie. He’s a good mover and looks like he can score goals,” said Rodgers. “When he gets a bit stronger he can do very well. “I’m been pleasantly surprised by the whole team. I’ve had one of the most enjoyable weeks I’ve had in football for a long, long time working with this group. There’s no egos. They are straight guys who want to learn and develop. We’ll give them the structures and perimeters. “There are obviously players I was more aware of than others. Then there are ones like Christian Ajer, 18-years-old and 6ft5ins, but athletic and can play football. “I have been pleased by the standard and how they take on board what we give them.” http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/14587963.-/

Rodgers will no doubt be pleased we have so many ball players in the team. Young guys who want to be in possession and a quick and move well.
Hopefully he recognises that what we need is a stronger, more physical presence to accompany that.

defence and attack will be strengthened aswell obviously but would be happy if we spent a large part of our budget on a cm who is tough as nails and can play a bit

That was a good interview with Rodgers. Sounds positive for Ajer and Christie. Not so much for Mulgrew

Good wee piece here.
Brendan Rodgers laughs off link to England job.. and says he’s at Celtic for long haul
Spoiler: click to toggle By DAVID FRIEL RONNY DEILA spent two years at Celtic and was never linked with another job. Brendan Rodgers has not even taken charge of his first Hoops game yet, and he’s among the contenders for one of the biggest jobs in the world. It sounds ridiculous but it’s true. Roy Hodgson had barely finished his England resignation speech on Monday night when bookies rushed out the runners and riders to replace him. Rodgers, who was sounded out by the FA last year, jumped out from the list — but he insists he’s at Parkhead for the long haul. He said: “I’ve just landed my dream job and I haven’t even walked out for my first game. “I haven’t put a foot wrong here! Brilliant. I see Jose Mourinho has also been linked with it. He’s unbeaten too . . . Is it flattering? It’s football. There are very few professions where one minute you are up, then down, then up again — that’s just how it goes. “If people think I can do jobs at a high level, then that’s fine. But I’m busy here, worrying about what I have to do at Celtic.” Rodgers’ former Liverpool stars Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana were among the England squad that flopped at the Euros. A humiliating defeat to Iceland saw Hodgson axed — and Rodgers admits whoever takes over has a huge task. Rodgers added: “It’s a tough job. England have a lot of good players, but there is huge pressure and expectation. It has been like that for a few years now. “There is a great group of players there. They have got some wonderful talents in that England squad. “But it’s been difficult for them at the Euros, and it’s been like that for a few tournaments. “So it’s unfortunate how it ended for Roy Hodgson, because he’s a good man and a very good coach. “The FA now have to appoint someone and look at creating an identity, a way the team can play.” Rodgers spoke from Celtic’s Slovenian base with new signing Moussa Dembele expected to join the squad today. The Hoops beat off fierce competition to land the Fulham superkid after his exploits in the Championship. But Rodgers insists France Under-20 star Dembele WON’T use Celtic as a stepping stone to move to a bigger league. Rodgers said: “It’s about selling players the possibility of the Champions League, playing in a competitive league, and feeling the pressure of playing in front of 60,000 every other week. “Not many teams can give them that, even in the Premier League. It shows you the status of Celtic that we can attract this kind of player. “Fair play to Moussa’s representatives. They want him to go to a club where he can develop and feel pressure while having the opportunity to improve as a player. “There’s no greater opportunity than coming to Celtic to do that. “Moussa is a big talent, super quick, strong, aggressive, with a good touch and he wants to score goals — he should be exciting. I want to try to get the best players I possibly can in to Celtic. “We needed more pace and goal threat in the team. “Leigh Griffiths got 40-odd goals last season and he was the main threat for Celtic. I want to see that threat from a number of areas. “The player with the most goals after Leigh was Tom Rogic who had ten. “I can see now why Leigh gets his goals. He’s a wonderful striker of the ball, with both feet, he is aggressive and can finish. “But I don’t want Leigh to feel he is the one relied on to get the goals. That can allow him to enjoy his football a bit more. “Moussa’s a player on the way up. He’s a young boy, but he’s already got experience. He’s done exceptionally well in an extremely tough league in the Championship, and he’s hungry to improve.” Dembele has already stated he wants to become the world’s best striker, and Rodgers admires that confidence. Rodgers added: “That’s a good start, isn’t it? Moussa is coming from a background where he can genuinely say that. “Moussa has come through at PSG and played at every level for France. http://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/sport/7206219/Brendan-Rodgers-laughs-off-link-to-England-job-and-says-hes-at-Celtic-for-long-haul.html
